EAST ORANGE, N.J. - A woman who founded a "no-kill" animal shelter was charged with health code and animal welfare violations after 200 dead cats were discovered rotting in garbage bags in her backyard.
Marlene Kess, who has built a reputation in Manhattan as a caretaker of homeless and dying cats, had 48 cats inside her house, including 38 in one room, authorities said.
Out back, 200 vermin-infested cat corpses were stuffed into garbage bags and apparently were going to be buried in a large hole that had recently been dug, said Sgt. Joseph Bierman of the state's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The cats were discovered after neighbors complained about the stench.
"Oh my God, it was awful," said Michael Fowler of the Associated Humane Societies. "The smell was horrible."
Kess, 56, is the founder and executive director of Kitty-Kind, which runs one of New York City's few no-kill shelters.
She said the cats died of natural causes. State SPCA spokesman Matt Stanton told The Star-Ledger of Newark an investigation into the death of the cats is "ongoing."
A longtime resident of Greenwich Village, Kess moved to East Orange in July.
"I take very good care of them," Kess told reporters Friday. "People who know me know there's no cruelty involved."
Kess was cited for health code violations, including keeping an unlawful number of animals, harboring dead animals and causing an environmental hazard with the corpses. The SPCA, which enforces the state's animal cruelty laws, charged Kess with 38 counts of failing to properly shelter cats.
Authorities are allowing Kess to keep the 48 cats in her home because she promised to separate the sick animals from the healthy ones, Bierman said.
Hows that for fucked up? |

How many "animal hoarders" (which is apparently the DSM term for "crazy cat ladies") are there in the US anyway? There's just so many... |

Ick. So that's why my state smells? Dead cats?
She probably didn't dispose of one or two bodies and then the diseased claimed a fair number more. I believe she didn't intentionally cause harm, but that's not an excuse for negligence. |

The "Cruelty Database" on this site has a fairly good listing of news reports of animal hoarding, as well as various other types of cruelty. Including bestiality. Fun.
Weirdly, most of the really nasty attacks listed seem to involve opossums. |

Too bad you can't search by abuser's name. I'd love to run a few furries through this. |

My 70 year old grandmother is a hoarder too. But she doesn't hoard animals.
She got arrested yesterday for stealing flowers from graves. :( |

I've been through NJ before, the reason theres a smell isn't the cats or the states fault. Think of this if you will, not to point fingers.
Why are Ontario and Toronto famed for being so clean and have a virtually non-existant waste problem? Its like you can't find anywhere near the two cities that have a landfill. |

So I should know. It's a bit why most of the people here who are critical of furry are or have been with the fandom.
Jersey is worse than any fandom. It's a Bon Jovi held, corrupt, stinky and stupid state. |

With the balls being the Appalachians or the trailer trash of middle Pennsylvania?
I assume by ‘taint’ you mean that area between the balls and the anus. I once knew the proper name for it, began with a ‘p’. Used it a lot in gay RPs. |

I don't know what I find more disturbing; the fact there's an actual name for that spot, or that you used it in gay RPs. =D |

Area between scrottum and buttocks. Scruttocks. Allthough I fail to see what being "a good little Christian boy" has anything to do with knowing one's anatomy.

New Jersey was a good place to visit when I was back there in '97. Nice places to see and go to as part of our family tour of the Eastern Seaboard states. This is ME saying I respect the state of New Jersey like any of the other states.
And no, I don't live in Canada, I live in the United States.

Well alright, everyone is entitled to thier own opinion.
I haven't heard anyhting new on this case in particular; probably not dominating the headlines. Certainly anything else I hear related to this will be posted in this forum.
As for local New Jersey cats that heard this story about thier next door neighbor, the reation was somewhat the same.
Taking the game of, "Cat & Mouse" to the next level. |

Marlene Kess sounds like what i'm terrified my mom will be in 10 years. She got involved in one of those local cat concern volunteer things. When she seperates a mother cat from it's kittens she gives it valium, to help it deal with the loss. wtf |
