It all started like a joke, a simple pic I was supposed to do to make fun of the attitude of some furries that like to identify anything featuring an animal as furry, and a blink to somebody who did a certain comment on another thread in this newsgroup. So I thought a picture of one of these creatures we find on VCL shaking the little cute raccoon I draw to represent myself would be appropiate.

So then I went and drew the picture.

What I wasn't aware of was that I was drawing the demon that has been chasing me for a long time. The text, that I thought a little after I came with the concept, was alienating after I read it written in the picture. It's displaying neatly what's my problem with furry fandom:

Am I a furry after all?

Am I going to be identified with the gross style of "art" the demon portrays, for the rest of my life?

Is my sudden grudge against furry fandom a reflection of the hate I feel to myself for doing stuff like this, for drawing lil' cute animals? For supporting furry fandom for so long even if I knew how full of crap it was and is still is?

In other words... I'm afraid that what the demon says may be true.

Anyway, look at the pic. Maybe I'm just making a big deal out of a very little thing.

Good heavens! I didn't get the full effect until I scrolled down.... eeks!

Well, after I got over the surprise, I thought about what you said. Just because someone draws cute funny animals doesn't automatically make them Furry, even if Furry fans choose to describe them as such. What really counts is whether you say it's Furry or not. For what it's worth, I read your strip a while back and I honestly didn't think it was at all Furry. Just a funny talking animals comic. There is a difference, believe me, though sometimes it can be a subtle one. Just because something drools and barks and wags its tail doesn't mean it's a dog... it could be a crazy guy in a dog suit ;)

Did that make any sense? I can't tell

Well, I'd say it depends on your definition of furry animals and funny animals.

If the cute, funny and more cartoon character like animals are funny animals then I'd say a lot of people fall under that catagory.

If the more adult and fetish type of stuff is furry animals then I'd say a lot less fall under that catagory.

Most of the your stuff that I've seen in my opinions falls under funny animals more then furry animals.

I've heard of the idea of 'I'm sickened by these people because I really am just like em and am really just projecting feels of hate towards myself'. But I don't think that's the case. I think your honestly upset over how what was a cute and fun idea to draw has been turned into such a sick and perverted fetish by a small percentage of the 'fandom' that has completly lost all connections to reality.

If you enjoy drawing funny animals then by all means, keep at it.

I have had this worry as well. I don't draw but I do enjoy anthropomorphic art. I much prefer the clean stuff and generally only use yerf to view the stuff. But I've oftened wonder if enjoying anthro art makes me a furry, or am I just someone that enjoys anthropomorphic art. Yes, I've looked at dirty stuff before but I never felt comfortable looking at it, I've felt as if in doing so that I was commiting a terrible sin.

(for example, I'd much rather see a cute pic of one of your characters then an erotic pic of a 'skunkette' or 'vixen' playing with herself)

:? It depends, what do you think you draw? Furry is just a label and like all labels can be shed with time, to tell the truth I don't think most 'normal' people would know what a furry is let alone think badly of you as a person for drawing something that could be said to be furry.

It's like saying every spy film is James bond, or every red fruit is a strawberry.

I just have to say....oversized genitalia and Herms...are just wrong...*shudders*

Ive never really liked the whole "G-PG-PG13 = funny animals", "r-X = Furry" thing myself
I dont feel that it is entirely accurate or fair (to anyone, furries included)

I just take what I want from Furry fandom and basically throw the rest away, I personally am not considering any sort of career that would, in any way, be harmed by it (if thats even possible in the first place...i dont really feel that it is ). I plan on doing machinist work or welding - high-paying blue-collar type work

i want my cadillac when im 30, not 50

(or i could just get one now with body rot and an oil leak for $200, whichever)

If you enjoy drawing funny animals then by all means, keep at it.

I think its too bad that a lot of artists in furry feel pressured to do pornography for various reasons , i would just like to point out that at the exact same time, the other side of that is: im sure there are people out there, who maybe wanted to create something (and it may very well have been good) but were dissuaded from doing so in the first place or had abandoned it - worrying that they might have been pegged somehow - in my mind thats just as bad, if not worse

Thats the REAL damage that furry fandom and its fucked up reputation is inflicting

because to be honest , i really dont give a shit about wading through the cesspool of furry fandom anymore..what do i care ? if someone for some reason decided to give me shit out in the real world, it might come to blows - short of that though, it really makes no difference

when an artist changes because of someone ELSE, or because of a generic preconception ..that does make a difference

Yes, I did stuff on some ´zines. I've contributed to South Fur Lands between 1997 and 1999, posted stuff for a couple of issues on North American Fur and Yarf, and also published on Furrlough, by Radio Comix, and New Horizons, by SFA.
Jarlidium Press, the publisher behind North American Fur, also published my comic "Three Apples" in a short edition not available anymore.

I've been active in the furry world since 1995 until 2003. But then thought that furry fandom's horizons are too narrow and gradually left it aside. I'm in the process to find my own creative way, with the elements I want, that may converge o differ what furry fandom considers ideal: I don't care anymore. :)

Well, based on what I suppose is your character, you're pretty good. Looks like pre-May 2001 David Simpson (Ozy and Millie). But please, never, ever EVER draw anything like that hideous thing again.

You can't just pick and choose what you like from a subculture, that isn't how they work. By drawing talking animals, you have to answer for Doug Winger, just like how every kid who dresses in black and hates high school has to answer for White wolf LARPers.

hmm, thats kinda funny , because not only is that precisely what im doing, its what ive always done, in all groups, cliques, scenes, AND subcultures

uhm, theres plenty of people who draw talking animals and DONT have to answer for Winger

and if someone wants to push the issue, start a fight over it
win or lose, its solved at that point

Please, repost your art here, m_estrugo...
I want to see your picture.
Thanks in advance!

Sincerely, I’m not ON at furry fandom.
I do funny animal drawings since 1968 only for hobby, I LOVE drawing this kind of art and see other artists’ art like this.
The Fandom was a recent discovery mine at 2002 and was a chance to show my “art” to everyone. Just a drop in the ocean (stormy ocean, I think now).
