Post subject: The State of the Forums |
|
|
Someone said to me on IM:
I have some friends who ocasionally visit CYD, but they're afraid of the forums because they say they're like SA's FYAD.
Now this state of affairs really annoys me. But what can I do? Should I start booting the idiots left right and centre, maybe by ruthlessly enforcing the forum rules, kick people for anything, so long as I get the dead wood out the door? Moderate new registrations?
Suggestions? |

You might at least look into instituting a policy similar to SA, if this is the case. A temporary ban (probation) for small, idiotic things - and if they don't learn, a ban.
Closing the forums to all but moderator/admin join approval is an interesting idea. It might just work. |

Closing the forums to mod-approved only access might lead to something of an elitist situation, not to mention the fact that it would eliminate the comedy to be had from random indignant furries wandering in and shouting at us. |

I love it when they do that. It always makes for some interesting debates/screaming matches. Livens things up around here.
And I think the probation idea is pretty good, although it might mean more work for Comp and Mitch, since people, upon being probation-ized, will try to create a new account to complain about them being shushed, leading to ban after ban, and complaint after complaint. |

Yes.
This place doesn't need to be anything more than a news site, maybe with an IRC componant so the few regulars who aren't dipshits can congregate, but otherwise kill it, state the reason you killed it in a small front page blurb and be done with it.
You have the power to stop it, here at least. |

Oh, I guess. Doesn't matter a whole lot to me, and it'll give alot more control over things. I guess we can keep the irc channel going, since it's already semi-unofficial anyways. :| |

Well, the thing is, this moderation style has some benefits. Namely, we occasionally have people who've done super-crazy shit(Biohazard, Hobart Starr et al.) come in and shed some light on their insanity. Which is good, because that's part of what made Portal Of Evil so fun- sometimes the site author would show up and be totally cool with everything and people would try to gain an insight into their strange minds.
However, uh, we have a steady trickle of clueless furry-types coming in hoping for attention and that is just not good. |

Well, ultimately, if you can't be arsed with the forums any more, then it's your site and you can do whatever the hell you like. I know if some of the faggotry that's been going on here was going on on my (defunct) forums, I'd establish a reputation as some sort of evil oppressive destroyer of communities mad with power or something. |

It's a bit hard to stave them off with many of the newer, more prolific posters are those which we poke fun at. Ya know, pluck thy sliver from thy eye..
In other words, I like pie, and this forum is unlikely to ever change. Mitch, Compu, as much as I love you guys, you don't have the balls to do anything. Let's be honest about it. You don't want to slight eachother, and yet have absolutely no conversation paths. This does not lead to strong leadership. |

It's clear CYD can not win the internet... fandumb will remain till the end of times, doing the same old over and over,
and we can just report it over and over!
But if we're here to have fun.. why is everybody so tense and angry?
Sure there are too many inane threads.. The noobs shouldn't start new uns so eagerly!
But what can ya do.. I am not net savvy so I dunno!
What do other good forums do that we don't?
And we can't just quit.. Keller and Co. read us too now and then! =) |

Not suck? They use the people against eachother. Really. Ok, for a bit of an example:
SomethingAwful charges you $10. If you fuck up, it costs you another $10. This keeps people at bay. You don't want to keep spending money.
PoE has moderators, and the whole crowd to browbeat you into submission when you're being retarded.
Uh, hmmm. Those are the two that come to mind.
Edit to append: I don't think either of those work here. What we need is for the moderators to have some open channel of communication. That, and they need to take more of a true hold on the forum. Some of us (and I mean me) are allowed to get away with anything, whereas others are not. There should be some form of retribution for anyone who's pushing it far too far. |

I remember that in Yerf forums, if you behaved like an idiot, you'd earn a warning, and you'd get a little warning symbol under your avatar or some such. Three warnings meant you were banned for good.
Truth be told, that didn't stop inanity to appear on the forum, since the "is it possible to become furry?" kind of posts appear with annoying frequence in a forum supposedly dedicated to 'art'.
Adopting more coercitive measures would be effective, as long as both posters and admins knew exactly what is allowed, what is not allowed and what is idiotic. Sadly, on those forums, I've seen lots of stupidity, namely:
- stupid threads
- stupid replies to threads
- stupid-banal-puerile-dragqueenesque behavior
- stupid in-jokes
- stupid fixation with certain relevant characters on furry fandom;
while it's true that some furry elements are pityful, one gets
kinda tired to see their names again and again like in an infernal
deja-vu.
The problem of this forums is THERE, not in letting or not letting people say or not say a thing or post or not post a picture. We've lost some of the posters who usually had -something- to say because the forum is getting more and more puerile in many aspects.
The forum would dramatically improve overnight, and wouldn't look like SA or POE or whatever (I've never been on those forums myself, so I can't tell EXACTLY how thy are, though I get the idea) if people realized there's a moment to speak, or, to make it more succint:
if you've got nothing to say, SHUT UP. |

This is getting to be a real problem, and a lot of it is my fault. You see, I've never quite taken this forum (or this site) very seriously. It's about cartoon pornography (for christ's sake), and so I gave it the serious thought I thought it deserved. Which is to say, not much. I always thought that if I stepped on somebody's toes or if people started acting like crap towards each other, then, well, they'd realise that it's all in fun and if they were really getting annoyed they'd tell me to knock it off and everyone would just move on.
Because, really, look at the shit we talk about. Just look at it. It is the last stuff in the world anyone should be getting seriously worked up over. |

Quoting for truth. Sorry, I can't add much to this to make it more true. |

Yeah, it used to be fine, we used to have a lot of laughs, and then we had an influx of knobs who don't quite fit in, who take things far far too seriously, and I just didn't know what to do with them. |

Leave it up to Compu. He'll berate them into never posting again, or give them modship. |
