I am a firm believer in werwolves, though I acknowledge that much of the "evidence" is a bit spotty. Why do I believe so strongly then, you may wonder? Simple. I believe for the same reason some people believe in Jesus, Allah, or what have you: I believe simply because I CHOOSE to. I don't need rock solid evidence. I believe what I want to believe, not only because it gives me pleasure, hope, and strength to hold such ideals, but simply because it is my right to believe what I want. Even if I find I am wrong on my deathbed, I lost nothing to have had faith. No armchair scientist can ever take that away from me.

Yeah, since I´ve studied quite a bit of german history, I know some things about those creeps.

A short version: During the final months of ww2, Heinrich Himmler tasked a senior SS commander called Hans-Adolf Prützmann to establish an organization of nazi insurgents, which would carry out acts of sabotage and terrorism in allied-occupied Germany. This became known as the "Werwolf" organisation. "Die Werwölfe" were mostly Nazi party and Hitlerjugend diehards. Their speciality was roadside attacks against allied soldiers, and they did also assassinate german officals working with the allies, such as the US-appointed mayor of Aachen. Werewolf cells were most active during 1945, and some may have been active as late as 1948.

While ridiculous and hilarious, it's not suprising. I know a kid who thinks dragons once existed, and worships Ra, the egyptian sun god. Take a wild shot in the dark as to what his favorite band is.

Lonely (and usually stupid) kids will make outrageous declarations of beliefs to both get attention, and feel special. It's really pathetic.

Adolescents seeking attention. Quite probably the number one reason why you get these fucked-up people believing they're dragons, elves, psions. Starts out small with someone's toying with the idea of being a dog. They make it public, and the idea gets laughed at by many, while being picked up by certain circles which encourage such thoughts. Another decides that being a dog isn't enough, and imagines themself a mountain lion. Another decides that's too mundane and goes for some extinct species of mountain lion. Eventually, in some form of one-uppance contest you get creatures of fantasy such as dragons. Next shock tactic is to throw everything into a meat grinder and add multiple genders, limbs, species, and in the case of furries, fetishes. Let the whole mess ferment in a deepening, dark vat such as FurryMUCK. Space collies are born, predator and prey mixes, THIS... Just look to a.h.w.w. for other examples of the downward spiral.

Well, to the lifestyler crap, I find it pretty simple. It's escapism taken to a spiritual level; one becomes so dissatisfied with their mundane lives they actually start believing in what they roleplay. I don't think it's a cry for attention, it feels more like a burning need to be some else, someone who deserves better than all the crap society throws at these people. The result of a damaged mind having been pushed into a corner. 'They may think they've won, but I'll have the last laugh! My werewolf soul is superior!' So while the flesh busies itself paying the rent and working for The Man, the mind can pretend it's a dragon flying around the stars and making the flesh's coworkers run in fear.
