I was just wondering -- you hear about $800 changing hands for a single art peice, but what's the highest, and what was it for?

Bonus if you can link to the image so we can see that expensive art peice for free! :)

Actually, if I remember correctly, for years the highest grossing furry works were auctioned at major cons. I think the current record holding work (not commission) was something like $3,800 for a lion warrior or something. Oddly, it was a break in a pattern, since before that the highest grossing works were always smut, and this wasn't.

Holy crap, I wouldn't have said $38 to say nothing of $3800. Sigh, there's no justice when an original Dave Gonterman only goes for $50. =(

Maybe the buyer just liked the pic a lot.

Or maybe it was one of those "spirit animal" things: The one other type of art beside porn that fetches high prices in furrydumb is pictures of "spirit animals" - not just the typical "I'm a fox" generic furry character pic, but one of those (rather rare) furries who have some deep quasi-religious belief that they really are the reborn spirit of a wolf/tiger/whatever, complete with native-american and/or wiccan "spirituality" thrown in. Just like highly specialized porn is expensive, so is highly specialized spirituality. The few pics of this type I've seen have been highly detailed, semi-realistic pieces, which usually take more time and effort for the artist than the somewhat more cartoony "normal" furry fodder, thus demanding a higher price.

You mean like Dark Natasha and Goldenwolf's works? Yes, that's a good possibility that the smuck opened his wallet wide to prove he isn't an icky hy00mon.

That's sadder, in a way. At least the porn buyer has an actual use for his art.

Wow, I'll admit, that's really good. But ten thousand dollars good? Hardly. Then again, I can't think of anything (even a car) that I could bring myself to spend that much on.

Ah, I think that is the one I was mentioning earlier, although I didn't think it went for that much. It was auctioned off at FC, if I recall, I'll try to find the stats on it.

Ah, sorry, my estimate was too low. It sold for $6,000 smackaroos.

January 30, 2003:

We're back from Further Confusion, which is even better now that it's in a bigger hotel! I had a great time there, and I know I'll be back again in 2004. This show marked a new record for an anthropomorpic themed original art work - an original painting by Goldenwolf fetched $6,000.00 at auction! I didn't get quite that much, but I set a new personal record as well. Woo hoo! 8)

I could name so many things to better waste $6,000 on. Maybe buy a couple of assault rifles/handguns/etc. or trick out their car... hey, plastic surgery would probably do this guy/girl who bought it a lot better....

I say we propose that Guinness create a world record for "Most ammount of money spent on a piece of furry art".

Now let's see how many idiots would be willing to break the record. That should be fun.

Ah, okay. Not quite as insane as ten grand, but still fucking ridiculous.

I wish I had $6,000 to spend on random useless crap. Hell, with that kinda money I could probably get several originals from real artists easilly.

For six grand these losers could get a real... aww, fuck it. I agree with Paul, it's obviously a psychological thing. Just like furry itself.

This subject makes me want to

That would be great for the resale value of your home. Better yet, have it done in your apartment. Then move out.

Screw that, let's have a 10 foot statue of macro herm vore unbirthing scat babyfur porn right in the freaking living room, within sight of the dining table. Now let's see how the value of your home does. ;D

Wait, didn't Merlino do something similarly horrific to his own house? Except for the "moving out" part :?

For $6000 I'd have a 50 foot statue of Doug Winger's Pandora made to be sitting on my house with hir wang resting on the lawn.

Well, in all fairness, Goldenwolf's work is the closest thing to Fine Art as you can get in the fandom. At least it wasn't pornography.

Fuck that. If I had an extra $6k laying around, I'd buy a motorcycle. I sure as hell wouldn't buy any super awesome furry art with it... Unless of course it came with a free motorcycle. :)

The exact problem with art is that people overspend on it for stupid reasons.

Granted, yes, goldenwolf is one of the best anthro artists, but I highly doubt this fetched 6k through artistic appreciation alone. Like mentioned, someone probably saw their spirit crap in the tiger guy. In fact, the buyer might be that Ripley's cat dude. I'll have to find a name for the buyer.

The Further Confusion after, Goldenwolf beat $6000 -- $10 000 for a piece titled 'Eyes of the Night', at FC2004. Image available on DeviantArt. Some of her sale history available here.

Gah! Who the hell would waste $10,000 on that!?$!@ *facepaws*

I mean it's nice and all, but not worth $10,000... >.> I wonder if that money went to charity or to her pocket. (and I guess I should be happy it's not porn but 'spiritual' art)

Considering the buyer is of ASB fame, it doesn't mean he can't still wank to it.

The piece by Goldenwolf isn't bad by any means, but its a far cry from a $10K chunk of art. Dark Natasha can bang out stuff of the same caliber *and* not rip you off for it. For that price I'd want something which could retain that sort of value outside of a clique. Granted, art is in the eye of the beholder, and fools and their money are soon parted. At least its something which you could hang on a wall and not be embarrassed by if any non-furries dropped by.

For now I'll let my little world be rocked by Mark Ryden's work.

If nothing else, we now know that at least some furries have lots of money.

As I understand it, she put the pics up for bid at auctions at furry cons - you can see the prices vary a lot. She's not to blame for someone wanting to shell out that much... it's also a compliment to the artist that someone wants to pay such amounts.

*facepaws*

Put on a dunce cap and go sit in the corner, young man.
