Just a question out of sheer, and morbid curiosity...has anyone actually ever been sued for drawing 'objectionable' art of copyrighted characters?

A friend of mine, who is not a furry (although I still would like to keep him nameless) had a strictly satirical site, that, while low on sexual innuendos and such, was pretty crass.
Anyways, this site was about a copyrighted, well known character, and was pretty small, but, sure enough, one day he recieved a very threatening cease-and-desist notice, that prompted him to remove the site and it's contents.

Anyways, I was wondering if any of these 'toon smut'/furry pr0nsters have ever been busted...?

Well, it's not furry-related but Gabe and Tycho of Penny Arcade have been sued (or at least recieved a formal complaint, I don't know the details) by American Greetings for the publication of this cartoon (you won't find this on their site anymore).

There have also been a number of sites which have had to pull their adult fanart because of companies complaining. Personally, I wish TDK would get sued, but that will probably never happen.

AFAIK Donotsue received a cease-and-desist letter form Warner's legal department over his Teeny Toons drawings somewhere in the mid-to-late 1990s. He can tell you more - if he wants to! Since then, Warner apparently has stopped caring about that sort of thing.

Intellectual material theft is pretty much the only e-crime known apart from kiddie porn or image leeching. If you think big cartoon companies are bad, try looking up geekier smaller games oriented ones. Blizzard and Gamesworkshop are sue-happy net browsers to a fault. Of course, cease and desist notices are rarely followed up.

The context of this message leads me to believe there is GW-inspired smut out there. I mean, I know how apparently Kerrigan is the hottest thing for guys who should get out more or at least just look up some real porn, but huwuh?

I am starting to imagine Dark Angels MM slashfic. God I hate my brain.

Oh, not porn... One can SOUL RAEP a heartless company with all variety of harmless things, such as mods for a third party's game or wide variety of other activity which amatuer fans do to try and spread the good word about the company which will soon send hordes of lawyers at them.

Donny's ass rules all. Much like Renamon, everyone is gay for Donnie.

I remember the sanfu over the comic. It was a jab at good old Alice, as in the fucked up FPS one released a few years ago and there was to be a "Oz" released in much the same fashion. Gabe's gotten over it though, as PA is never doing better.

And both Gabe and Tycho have made fun of furries in the past too, you all remember that snafu..

I'm kind of sorry I missed that. It was a pretty harmless jab, but I can just imagine the shitstorm that erupted from it. I still hear furries going out of their way to comment on how not funny Penny Arcade is, still bitter over that.

The one thing I never get are the furry pseudo-artists who sit around and whine about their art being stolen and their copyrights violated... while they're sitting there doing Minerva Mink in bondage and Babs Bunny porn.

Pot, stop fucking kettle.

Don't give them new porn ideas.

Some people say that the rule of thumb is that failure to engage in totally overzealous due diligence in defense of your intellectual property will cause it to enter the public domain and so every company with IP will then look to sue into the ground anyone who remotely rips it off.

Furry unfortunately proves it just ain't so.

(Nothing against Donny you understand, but seeing someone like Quozl set upon by the Warner Bros. legal strike team would have been the sort of guilty fun you get in watching those videos of extreme sports disasters on the net, or Ogrish.)

Sadly meanwhile, the RIAA is suing little girls for downloading Brittney MP3s.

The Quozl story is one of my favorite furry tales (tails?) of all time. It cracks me up like nothing else.

Some people (read furries) confuse copyright rules with trade mark rules.

Furries confuse spooge with spiritually insightful commentary on life, so this is not a stretch.
