There was a debate recently on Spacebattles.com regarding this story:

http://www.orionsarm.com/stories/Hell.html

One poster described it as "religious bdsm uber-furrywank" or something to that effect. The question is, would you classify this story as furry at all? Sure, there are anthro characters in it, and at least 3 humans (not counting the flashback scenes). But isn't it REALLY about something more ... umm ... grotesque?

Is there some sort of "furry quota" to define the genre boundary?

IMHO that's not furry. But it's definitely verging on it.

It's furry if it has anthropomorphic characters in it. It probably only counts as furrywankery if it's all furries humping treestumps though, but then again, most furries are severely screwed up and have lost track of what furry means.

Question: are aliens "furry"? Bearing in mind that most aliens in SF are anthropomorphic to some extent. Or do they have to be obvious "animal people"?

If they're the kind of aliens as in Quozl, then I think it's safe to say yes.

It's a mess, that's what it is.

Yeah, the aliens had much of the whole furry thing going on. Joey-cub? And the mandatory majestic ultra-powerful etc, etc, etc.

And Cats being imps for some cat-goddess that looks nothing like a cat. The what? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

And the last part was just an over-the-top and melodramatic gorefest, really. And with such an overemphasis on PAIN, with truly flat characters. Toss them all into the sarlacc pit AM the planet, says I.

Is there some sort of "furry quota" to define the genre boundary?

I'd say no. Although the whole 'Can we replace these characters with people in costumes, without losing any supposed value?' does seem to be a good rule of thumb for me. But frankly, I've given up on trying to define it. Focus on more real boundaries, like, 'Does this suck?'

In the purest sense, anthropomorphics is the giving of human or human-like characteristics to something which otherwise does not possess them. The Brave Little Toaster is anthropomorphic. I think that among furries, restricting that to animals is probably a good idea, but if you're talking about aliens that are anthro bugs or sharks or something, why not?

I’ve just done some browsing on the Orion’s Arm website, and it turns out that those critters weren’t really aliens at all.

THESE are the aliens.

Apparently in Orion’s Arm, anything that resembles Earth life probably descended from Earth life (gene splicing and all that).

Here are some examples:

Provolves

Splices

Rianths

Thank you PV Jeltz for the second bunch of images after Mitch's link to that bathroomplay image to make me scream incoherently and babble like a nut in front of the monitor banging my head into the keyboard until a random combination of key hits took it away and I was able to grab the liquor bottle and down another swig to deaden the pain.

The Splices image is another example of the mental impact described by the (overused) net word OMGWTFBBQ.

Umm, so much for assuming that, the site was some wierd amature scifi site. Those pics make it totally unnecessary to actually read any text to determine what the true purpose of the site is.

Negative points for using the word "manimal" in a non-humorous or -pop-cultural context. >.<

Only John Travolta can pull off that word. Because he has leverage.

Nope, John Travolta said, "Man-Animal"

But then again John Travolta is a Scientologist... so who cares what he says.

THANK YOU!

After Battlefield Earth, he should have been force-sterilized.

Hey AngryPuritan, remember that big explosion at the end...

Yeah that was John Travolta's Career.

Is there some sort of "furry quota" to define the genre boundary?

Yes there is. 18 gallons of spooge and a minimum of 16 shittingdicknipplehermtaurs. Am I forgetting anything?

I actually like John Travolta. I think he might just be a scientologist for the tax breaks on cult status. He seems like a really nice guy. :|

This has probably been said my more women to their mothers before their husbands chopped them up, stuffed the remains in a trunk, and took off to start a whole new life before being featured on America's Most Wanted than any other phrase.

Of course, similar sentiments have been expressed about furries and we know how nice they really are.

The only person who scientology offers tax breaks to is L. Ron Hubbard.

Isn't that just because "chained by psycologists in the depths of a volcano" isn't a valid place of residence?
