Though milder than your average, the stories are still fairly mediocre.

I'm at a loss to explain their popularity as well. Best I can determine, it's the closest thing furry has to something professionally created from within the fandom, and thus everyone flocks to it. The fact that chakats are subtly and not-so-subtly portrayed as being superior to humans physically, socially, and culturally doesn't hurt either, I'm sure.
