Isn't "Conservative furry" some kind of oxymoron?

I just discovered this LJ group for Conservative Furries.

Notice they only have, like, 4 members. Somehow I have the feeling they won't grow much bigger than that... >_>

Sure it's an insignificant speck in terms of the vast horrors and incongruencies of "the fandom", but it made me chuckle, anyway, if only for the sheer irony of the concept. ;)

I think they're growing. Some sort of a backlash to using "OMG REPUBLICAN" as a pejorative, probably.

Okay, I'm probably getting in over my head, but I felt there was a need for this community. Conservative furs are a definate minority in the fandom and I've long felt that there should be some place to get together and discuss politics in relationship to our common interests.

As we all know, no one is more educated on the current political climate than Teh Furrae.

Thou art correct. It kind of surprises me that Cigar Fetish Skunk and Naylor aren't part of these groups, although one look at Naylor's LJ account shows he's not part of any LJ community.

I guess you don't want to hear about the furry renaissance history group, the Diet of Furms, or the furry WWII reenactment club, the Hundred-and-Furst Airborne.

Furry conservatives have always been a nice little group to follow. Not to dissimilar from the rest of furry in their self-righteousness and groupthink. I'm honestly surprised more furries aren't conservative. The two just seem to 'fit'. They're the two most obvious groups I know where disagreeing wih them is an attack upon them, their friends and their way of life. Even then though, con-fur-atives seem to be that way for many different reasons.

Some of them seem to be batshit fundies, just like a part of any conservative group. Ben Bruin comes to mind here. Why they are furries is likely either just for the fetish, or more likely, because if they surround themselves with gay liberals they can keep the underdog/victim/minority complex.

Some are honestly just right in thought beforehand. The degrees of their argumentation vary, from Banner's verbal diarrhea, to Exile's* hyperdefensiveness, to less vocal ones like Nightcoon, all the way down to right leaning 'cool' ones like Necco or Nothingkat. The reason they are in the fandom is more likely for more than just the fetish, even though that's still a part of it.

Some are right in thought FROM furry. I think this would fit our friend Cigarskunk the best, and it makes sense. If you let a sci-fi fandom be your determining factor for what a 'normal' gay or democrat is, you sure as hell will hope on the bandwagon of sexuality destroying the world.

Some do it as a means of declaring "I'm one of the good ones". See KitchDDR. Overweight, still living with his folks at 25, and therefore highly political. LOL. I think this is likely the saddest of them all.

Overall, no one gives a shit about an LJer's or a furry's political opinion.

(* Some drama there with a JessK comission IIRC)

Hey I'm confused too

My friend is a furry and apparently republican.

I mean I can't even wrap my head around how his political views, religion personality, and personal likes coexist in the same person.

He's smart too, an Engineering Major.

In the end I'm just left giggling that his likes are Conservatism... and Furcadia.

I have a freind who is like that as well, when ever I see him I try to avoid talking politics, as I'l a left leaning centrist, things can get pretty unpleasent.
He's a army reservist, and his unit is going to be shipped out to the sandbox later on this year for a two year deployment. So he's being shipped off the for that stupid war that was started by the guy he voted for.

Oh well, he's too much into group-think for his own good, And I know it, listens too all of those neo-con radio idiots, and takes everything they say as the gospel truth.

I've tried to talk sense into the guy but it just does'nt work, he just won't listen..

I think it's a big deal that some of them don't subsist entirely on instant ramen and instant macaroni & cheese, which is apparently really common amongst geek cultures, particularly furry.

Not at all, I'm a conservative furry, although I certainly wouldn't self-define as a furry anymore because I'm frankly disgusted with just about all of furrydom to the point where I've lost most of the interest I once had.

Well, to be perfectly honest, same here. :p

I was never a "furry" so much as "anthro artist", though.

And, um, to be perfectly honest, my husband started the group I linked to above and kind of half-heartedly tried to hide it from me because I had informed him previously that I thought it was a very silly idea.

And I just hope he never finds that cooking group. He LOVES to cook. The other night he made some strange cabbage-based dish. And last week he made teriyaki chicken.

So, though I won't defend the ridiculous concept of his LJ group, I have to interject that he's really a very intelligent, successful, and really non-screwed up person. I honestly don't understand WHY he calls himself a "furry", since he has NOTHING in common with the freakshow that goes on in the fandom. The only similarity is that he likes cartoon animals.

Why can't we have some kind of totally separate fandom for otherwise normal people who just happen to like cartoons??? 0_o

There already were attempts to make such a thing. The problem with making a fandom out of anything is the simple fact that any fandom will attract fanboys, drama and other baggage. You'll find normal people who like funny animals who used to have ties to the furry fandom (or still do because they like me live under the delusion that the founding prinicple of the fandom was an appreciation of anthropomorphics and still is despite all the layers of filth). There are a few sane furries, they're just not as pronounced.

Because that was already tried by the Burned Furs. The solution is not to rely on any large group or geekdom to like cartoons. You can do that independantly. If you set foot in Anthrocon, you ae thereby furry not much unlike how setting foot in Otakon will leave you 'otaku'. Why do you need a fandom to enjoy the subject though? It's the pivotal flaw in your logic.

What if you just go to Anthrocon dressed as the crocodile hunter and bring a friend with a camera.
(in a corny australian accent)
It seems we've stumbled upon a furry convention

furries are native to the internet but from time to time they gather in large groups at which point they begin to bleed money.

The AC gestapo will throw your cameraman in the ovens. Xydexx and Kage go apeshit on any media they think won't paint them in a wonderful innocent light. Of course, only small time media guys come anyway. I would have loved to see someone like Jeff Cole show up while they we're still in Philly. He's got one of those tough-guy investigative-reporter attitudes and won't stop hounding his subject until bodyguards toss him aside. It would have been great.

I'll have to ask my friend, or Bobby maybe knows, he's banned from the guy's LJ. Kitch's biggest LOL factor in my book is the fact he is a "straight fur" but has posted the comissioned image of his male character and commented about how sexy it was. Obviously, either a tad delusional on a lithe rottie being his 250 pound ass, or a tad confused sexually.

Probably just oohing and ahhing over how 'damn sexy' he is or some shit. Furries have big heads (ON THEIR SHOULDERS YOU PERVERTS) But yeah, there was something going on with he and his Girlfriend...it was documented in drama_awesome but I can't find it D:

No, I believe the conflict is that conservatives usually wouldn't be down for some buttsex, considering the almost official stance against gay marriage. But if defending conservatives to be one more level of "different" gets you off, then who am I to judge?

Who are you to judge? Don't pass up this golden opertunity for moral superiority! :)

I'm more right leaning than left and, support the current administration over the alternative, and I still believe people should be able to have the full legal entitlements of a partnership with whomever they choose. The fact that a transgendered man can marry another man now he's legally a woman adds a layer of absurdity to the whole 'gays cannot partner up' debate.

You'd be surprised how many "furry + your interest here" groups there are, especially on LiveJournal. A quick look through the resulting list when you enter "furry" for Interest should make it perfectly clear. Just to read off a few:
  • Cowboy furries
  • Furry parents
  • Furry gamers
  • Furry Christians
  • Furs of color
  • Patriotic furs! <-- (their punctuation not mine)
  • Military furs
  • Furry vegetarians
  • Furry weight-loss <-- (this is just too, too easy)
  • Furry ravers
  • Furry motorcyclists
There was even at one point a group for furries who like Volkswagens. Its name? "Furvergnugen."

I'm kinda in the same boat, i'm a far left gun fanatic so either way i vote i'm fucked. Elect the latte sipping san francisco liberal, i can kiss my manhood affirming guns goodbye. If i vote right we might end up in some pointless/profitable war based on a lie that my accident-kid that was brought to conception only cuz roe vs wade got overturned.

The best i can do is just never vote, that way when i get fucked, i can proudly say "I didn't vote for that guy"

They tend to be one in the same. Emo furries and goth furries who draw pictures of themselves naked with bleeding gums.

Saddest thing I've ever seen - some poor infant crammed into a hand-sewn baby-size fursuit to match the fake ears and tails its parents were wearing. I don't remember which con this was at, but it's pretty horrible regardless. That poor kid is going to get picked on so badly once it hits school age.

You beat me to it. But really, furry goths are common amongst the fandom as a whole, in my experience. A look at the VCL will show that. Bleeding emaciated white pupil-less wolves with some mess of a "dreary" background are second only to the infamous bizarre smut.

Conservative furs. Eh. It's not the first group, even the first furry group, to decide that their filthy secrets (that aren't so secret online) don't need to keep them from pigeonholing themselves even further, whether they belong there or not. Maybe just being a furry doesn't make them feel accepted enough.

My word, someone can hold a conservative viewpoint AND still dress as a fox on the weekends? Say it is not so. Next we'll be hearing there are conservatives that want to legalise weed, or DONT go out hunting the brown folk with automatic weapons.

No, I believe the conflict is that conservatives usually wouldn't be down for some buttsex, considering the almost official stance against gay marriage. But if defending conservatives to be one more level of "different" gets you off, then who am I to judge?

Scarily enough, I know a bi Republican. I helped set him up with his boyfriend

Libertarian, don't vote at all, it all ends up the same in the end. I was joking earlier, i'm not one of those "Politicians don't understand youth!! Don't support they're lies!!" idiots. The only reason i didn't vote before was out of sheer laziness and the fact that the only election that concerns me is the presidential election and I live in the most liberal area of the entire country so there's never any real chance that the outcome of my area will be anything but strait demo.

I acctually regestered to vote last election and they friggin lost my info and turned me away.

A quick scan through LJ communities turned up this wonderful list of hubs where the deranged can meet the deranged. Featuring more quotes from 'Confurvatives'.

It's poor judgment to believe only the head of the executive is worth voting for. If we all took that approach, we might as well just appoint a king every 4 years. Making your voice heard, in the voting booths and in letters to the editor, regardless of who/what you support is vital to the health of our democracy. Voter apathy in this nation is making us look like spoiled brats. Many good men and women worldwide have died to fight for the right to vote, and thusly they turn out in record numbers for elections.

Local politics are national politics in a federal system, and your freeholder/school board/mayor/whatever offical will miraculously turn into the 'they' everyone talks about after the election. Likewise, your governor and represenatives and senators and state legislators are all representative of you while they do their job. They reflect upon you, so don't you want to at least try to put your best face forward?

In the dealer's room at FC '05, I saw a couple walking their toddler (3-4 years old I'd guess) around the room. ...The room with the pr0n. :(

Based on not only the quotes here, but from what else I've seen in furry... its that its left leaning.(The knee-jerk willingness to accept difference, diversity in sexual preference, the fact that homosexuality is so common in furry) Right leaning people are in the minority there, and ridiculed (Furries have to accept dog fuckers, but not conservatives) so its predictable that they would tend to group together.

Rather than bash them for their political beliefs, I think itd be more fun to bash them for stupid furry things they may do.

I think most of the bashing comes from the fact their political beliefs don't make much sense combined with the funny furry shit they do. They stick out like a sore thumb, and then confine themselves into sub-sub-culture status over it.

I mean, if I went down to the local NRA meeting wearing my favorite 'drop Bush not bombs' shirt while talking about the new Colt rifle, I should expect that, yes, I'm out of my element and maybe I should satistfy my interest, my hobby, without the official group structure.

But no, they stay in there, and some use the fact liberal furries hound on them as a personal justification to their beliefs, not much unlike how furries will use the fact sites like this or PoE mock them as a personal justification as to how much of a cultural entity they are or some crap like that.

See KitchDDR. Overweight, still living with his folks at 25, and therefore highly political. LOL. I think this is likely the saddest of them all.

Oh yeah. I remember his ass.

That's the reason his RL picture is no longer in his profile. He stalked the hell out of several chicks who all can't stand him.

Haha oh man. How did you get banned from his journal? That's awesome!!!

Heck yes. I don't want the government in my bedroom (Red) OR my pocketbook (Blue).
