Is it just me, or does Groat's Red Shetland bare a strong resemblance to a comic heroine called Red Sonja? 'Red' name/hair, check. Bruiser personality, check. Chain/platemail bra and painties, check. Medieval sword, check. Draw as a fan service, check.
Then again, likely both are the victims of the same rampant unoriginality in comics today. I wouldn't want to accuse Jimmy of just making his furry a clone of another character (but so many furries do that anyway). I'd hate to think what would happen if the guy who drew the human modelled it after Shetland. Then you'd get the furry fuckball of art theft avengers and dramabomblets. Oh well, just an observation. |

That'd be quite a feat, given this bit:
Red Sonja first appeared in comic book form in Marvel's original Conan #23 in 1973
My completely biased opinion? Considering how the loudest complainers of art theft often are the worst ones, you could place good money that Red Shetland is a xerox of Red Sonja with a muzzle glued on. |

Give the guy a break, Jer. Every time you walk into a room, every male specimen instinctively clenches their butt-cheeks.
It's called "The Simmons Effect". |

Groat addressed this long ago. Red Shetland was supposed to be a take off on Red Sonja. Yeah, it's a rip. Who cares. |

Well, see the thing is, if Random T. Wolf ripped off a sonic sharacter to play on Furcadia with, yeah, who cares. But Groat makes profit here, and he's using not only someone else's character, but one that's likely trademarked (and I don't mean in the look "I can press alt-0169" kinda way). |

Well honestly he could probably get away with the parody defense on this one. I mean if you didn't know what furries were you would assume this was poking fun at Red Sonja.
I'm not sure who owns the rights but I'm guessing Warner Brothers didn't have to get the copyright's for Buck rodgers when they did Duck Dodger's, speaking of that was the Buck Rodgers show supposed to be funny? I only saw the end of one episode and at first I thought it was Spaceballs and I honestly don't know if it was comedy or just really campy like batman. |

People still buy Red Shetland comics and prints? I thought the character faded into obscurity during the Clinton administration. |

Reminds me of the great Red Shetland animation scam from 10+ years ago, the only thing to come of it was:
This
And This
I forget exactly how much money was scammed in donations for the project, but those were the results. |

If I was donating money to a project like that, I'd hope they'd spend it on more than three or four different sound effects. How many times was that "whoosh!" of air heard? It's the sound of Shetland turning her head, of Shetland's friend waving, of Shetland moving her hand to her sword, of Shetland waving her sword... at least it's not the sound of her actually drawing out the damn thing! (That gets the standard anime "pweeng!" of course). And then there's the crowd noise loop at the end of part 1 that never ends until I close the furshlugginer browser...
And there seems to be clicking at the beginning and end of every single sound. Maybe that's just a bug in the naff Java app, but if not, then c'mon, if yer gonna use the same sound 20 times in a row then get the editing right! |

About half the sound effects didn't load or were off-sync, and Red's speech is slowed down on my system too. Sucks. |

Oooh. I didn't know about this project.
I did a quick search on groups.google.com and found this, where Groat talks about both his stay at Angouleme and the animation project. I took the liberty to highlight some parts I found interesting:
Subject: Red Shetland goes "PBS"
Date: 19 Dec 92 15:18:14 -0600
Hiyahello! Just picked up Red Shetland #6 at the local comics shop... What a hoot! =) Mothra unmasked! Red Shetland in a dress! (Also, Red nekkid, too, but, oh well. =P )
Anyway, looks like GraphXPress is in trouble (big news), and I thought I'd give my fingers some exercise by typing in the editorial column from RS #6 to include a blatant plead for help... ("Furry" comics aren't doing so hot, huh?)
--begin editorial--
EDITORIAL
From the Head Bozo
--Jim Groat
Well the International Comics Festival, in Angoleme, France, was as they advertised, jammed with people. But truthfully it sucked. It seems that the French only like 64 page color hardbacks, much like Tin-tin or Asterix the Gaul you might see on the shelves of your local shop or bookstore. They consider comics done the American way as throw aways, not worth spending money on. In short, we got burned big time. Between the French customs, the French kids (who took anything not nailed down as free), we're $6500.00 in the hole (!!!). Adding insult to injury, no European distributors were interested in American comics (with the usual exception of TMNT) so there was a loss there. Add to this, the loss of over 100 RED SHETLAND cloisenne pins, stolen by gypsy kids. That was about 80% of our stock of pins. /Never/ attent the International Comics Festival in Angoleme, France.
Which leads to this. We need help, big time and soon, or there will be no more RED SHETLAND. Here's out offer... Much like a PBS station, we need financial aid, both in sales and donations. For donations of $100.00 you get an original page of your choice from the RED SHETLAND series (except issue#1). For $500.00, not only do you get the page of your choice, but the color cover of your choice (Including issue 1). This offer is also good on EQUINE THE UNCIVILIZED, but the pages are $50.00 each. All donations will be gratefully accepted and acknowledged in issue #7. Please list three choices in order of preference. Please make checks or money orders payable to GRAPHXPRESS.
So please help out if you can, because you are gonna love what we've got planned for issues 8-10.
The animation account is now at $4175.00 and we are still accepting donations for that. $6000.00 will show the Canadians are serious.
And back by popular demand ... our first full color T-shirt, "YOU WANT MY
OPINION?!" showing Red giving the finger. $15.00, plus $2.00 postage.
THANKS YOUS this issue go out to Darril Exline and Mitchell Cox for buying pages of RED SHETLAND when the advance notice went out on the Fidonet BBSs: THE POLAR BEAR DEN, KITTY'S SANDBOX, and WANDERING WOLF'S DEN.
...

Woo. Comedy gold!
Considering that they're used to the large comic books (and books, not rags) I'm not surprised that they assumed that the unknown small pamphlet written in another language for an unknown value (Do you think Jim printed a sign for francs or euros?) would be assumed to be giveaways. Especially at #5 or #6. Barely printed, that is.
I love that bit about gypsy kids, too. That does explain his sign about shoplifters. Absolutely funny. But here's the best part. Much like a PBS station. Does that mean Groat gives the comic away for free, then expects a donation?

Oh Groat, that bitter ol' goat. I like how he blames Red Shetland's failure to sell in France on format, claiming only 64 page colour hardback comics sell there. I was in Angoulême in 1992. I didn't encounter Groat (I had no knowledge of him back then), but one of the artists I did speak with was David Mazzucchelli, who was there promoting the first issue of his self-published Rubber Blanket, which is a 32-page black & white American-style comic book, and in English, obviously. Printed in larger format and on better paper than your average American comic book, but still. Mazzucchelli sold the entire lot he brought in half a day. The difference? Mazzucchelli makes interesting and insightful stories told in exquisite artwork and dazzling layouts; Groat makes boring, in-jokey, sloppily drawn crap. Of course, Groat can hardly be expected to acknowledge his own lack of talent. Better to blame those dastardly French for being comic book format racists. But really. If you want your comic to sell, you should try making a good one!
It's true, however, when Groat says that no European distributor (save the British and Irish) would be interested in an American comic book. That's a no-brainer - you don't distribute something nation-wide that's not in your own language; that's left to small import specialty shops. I mean duh.
Also, I simply love the "pins stolen by gypsies" bit. Lamest excuse to ask for donations ever.

The hair...the glasses...it reminds me of Dennis Falk. The fact that he and pink rabbits are linked in my subconscious doesn't hurt. |

That's just an awesome meme. I think it needs to be better worked into other things.
Why, after all the donations, is furnation still down? The hard drive was stolen by gypsies. If there's LJ drama over someone being unemployed, gypsies stole all the good jobs. Aert theft and soul rape could be pinned on gypsy kids, as well. |
