But I reaaly really do not enjoy seeing pics pics of overly complicated fursonas. Even when they look good.
let me see if if I can find an example.. hm... here we go...
Ok. Awesome pic right? yeah. Good coloring nice details blablabla.
but sweet jesus, youd think the owner of the char would want to stop at making some crazy dinosaur thing. does it really need all of the raver bracelets and general garbage that surrounds it?
Now, I dont know if I'm biased or what it is, but I have a couple general char design rules.
One of them is that, if I cant draw a recognizable image of the char in under five minutes, I scrap it... and thats like including any little details or accesories that might be included.
Another thing is that I try and make sure that shit makes sense. If I cant think of a reason for a fox to have wings or parachute pants or any of that furry shit, then I dont draw it.
I guess it would be difficult to come up with an original character given the fact that there are just so many out there and what have you... but fuggit.
When you try too hard to be original, you just come off as annoying.
:? jeezus, I'm a prick when it comes to char design. whatev, ferget i sed anything |

Magnus tends to have different levels of detail on her characters in her own art... and it's still more refreshing that standard-wolf-guy-with-giant-dick fursonas.
The ones I tend to get all confuzzled over are the hybrids. "My char is a quarter dragon three quarters artic fox with a lions tail and a wolf head." Those are the worst... and add it being a hermtaur on top and just all conceptualization flies out the window.
If you want to see overly detailed art though, I'll have to find you a Psudodrake image.
edit: detailed, not complete |

I agree with you though, sometimes it's just too much and it's like the artist is SCREAMING at you to believe it's original. And that's when it's not, since it's been done so many times before. Don't people realize that less is more? |

pllzz do. Altho, I have the general overview of things pretty much figured out, I still have much to learn of this cave of smut called 'furry'
and before it gets brought up by anyone, I do have a hyrid char, but its only two animals, and you cant really tell, anyway. |

Shame to see she's still wasting her talents on furries. Not that I could care less if she (Silver Bobcat) strolled off a cliff. |

I liked the picture up until it loaded completely and I could see everything under the head and wings.
The color and pose are swell, but I'd like to know what happened at the rave that made him so angry. |

Ugh. Yes, yes, and yes.
My favorites* are the ones who spend hours upon hours on one particular aspect of the character (aside from genetalia), painstakingly tweaking every last minute detail to create something 'special and unique', when in reality it just looks like they spent way too long on one part of the figure and not nearly enough on the rest. Like that Zeraia chick on VCL. (And then, of course, they freak out whenever some other artist has the good sense to spend some extra time on details. heh.)
Or the super-specific-coloration ones. "My character has a 1.115 inch diameter spot on its belly, color R221 G044 B100. COPYRIGHT MEEEEE!!!"
Come to think of it, I seem to recall a thread somewhere...may have been on CYD...a few months ago about someone crying OMG ART THEIFT because someone who'd never seen their art just happened to use a similar stripe/spot/whatever pattern. Anyone else remember that?
*And by favorites, I of course mean "most f'king annoying" |

Some paint pony theft accusations, Keffie or something...
I wouldn't rip on this. Some people just enjoy making a detailed character or, God forbid, making something a viewer can look at for a few minutes picking out details. There's being different for the sake of being different... and there's being different because that's just how you showed up. 'Gee, I'm a raver in real life, maybe my omg lol fursona should be one too!'
It gets absurd when artists - particularly those who can't draw - insist on pointing out every single detail in extreme depth, listing them for others to draw, then freak out when that list isn't followed. |

Im not looking at this from the angle that it is a fursona, I'm looking at this from a design perspective.
Chars with too many knic knacks is a poor design trait.
I'm not going to just excuse the person and say 'oh theyre just a furry trying to represent themselves.' if they wanted to represent themselves, they could draw a fat balding 30 year old man (as I know all of us here at CYD could relate to since we are all 30 year old balding men)
self representation is no excuse, these are still characters, no matter how you look at it.
i mean, honestly, its not really a big deal...
but it pisses me off goddamnit!! :( |

The only furries who self represent properly are the handful of lesbians who have their characters be a bit pudgy, beyond that, it's an inverse rule of represenmtation. The younger, skinnier, and more handsome the little tiger boy is, the fatter, older and uglier its player.
Oh, and Psudodrake, the dude who tries too hard for his own good.

Forget the fursona-- can we just put a moratorium on the use of the "word" "pwn" and all its various forms? That alone negates any coolness associated with that drawing. |

their lack of knowledge of permanent and impermanent traits of character reveals what bad character artists/designers they are. |

RailFoxen, you are thinking of Kaffe. She went after a 12 or 13 year old girl who went by the nick of "Horseh" (but has a different DA name, IIRC) for having a similar character. Horseh used MS Paint for her drawings and they were typical little girl drawings of cartoony brown pinto horses. For the longest time you could see the conversation and a journal entry or two between the them on Kaffe's DA site, but it seems that she has done some house cleaning on her account. I don't know if Horseh ever changed her character in the end. |

Rest of her gallery seems decent and she's seventeen. I didn't draw like that when I was seventeen. One of us has either been slow or spent too much time inside the house. I can't rag on a kid for wanting to show off on a trade. It's a weakness of mine.
But what has me worried is the distinct lack of regular stuff from her gallery. It's always sad for me to see a decent artist pump out nothing but furry/anime/fetish shit. Furry sure takes them young and dosen't let them go. I'm hoping she just keeps her other stuff well seperate from furries. I know I do. Why is it anyway? Do furry artists have to sign some kind of secret contract to not churn anything but furries until they are finally broken by furdumb.
I hope it's like metal music. You get that phase in teens that lasts a few years where you listen to nothing but metal until you finally notice that there is other music too or abandon it completely.
Edit: Awww, there's at least a neko human on the front page. A stone is off my chest. |

Now see what you guys did?
I think we have company.
I sometimes wonder if someone's written a script that catalogues every name or 'fursona' that happens to get mentioned on the forums here, and then linked it on some pro-furry bizarro-universe version of CYD. But it wouldn't be able to tell you anything about context, just whether your name was mentioned, and link directly to the 'signup' page.
Or maybe there's some kind of secret 'six degrees' type of network where one or two people scour the forums for comments about someone that could be considered 'negative', and using the mighty power of AIM, that someone could know of their mention before the forum regulars even see it.
Or maybe furries are like Beetlejuice, or that other guy who shows up if you say his name 5 times. |

Actually, this is hardly a bad thing. Some of the best discussions this forum has ever seen have been due to an artist coming on here to discuss their works in an apologistic manner. See the Biohazard/ZenZhu exchange, very productive for e-philosophy.
Then again, the worst threads ever usually involve a furry coming in to 'educate' all of us 'idiots' on 'proper art' and 'legality' and shit. |

Not that I'm complaining at all, but I did genuinely like when the forums were more combatative, in general. I remeber getting to arguements with Chris Baird, Computolio, New Meat, and even ZenZhu off the top of my head. (or outright flamewars with the likes of BOC, and Howard to a degree.. tho maybe that was AFF.. I can't remember anymore, its all one big blur of retarded)
...good times! |

Furries make a full time job out of the internet. You say something about their fandom, them specifically, or their second cousin and they appear like magic poltergeists no matter what room of the house you mentioned them in, ready to throw some plates and glasses around. |

I love it when people create their own species all together rather than hybrids. My main character is a damn ordinary cat, but I just had to have it that way, its not as if I'm selling it to anyone, it's purely a character I draw for fun and perhaps practise anatomy and cartoony styles with. I'm happy with the fact nobody has come close to having similar markings though, I don't want to be a complete clone! Not that it really matters seeing though I wouldn't lose any money.
I think its more important to have an original style than a species anyway. |

I agree; but originality is something that is severely lacking in furry. And often times when someone tries to be 'original', they do so in the exact same way as any other furry. It's like a random number generator that always generates the same string of numbers. Ex: "Red foxes are boring. I'll do something KUH-RAZY and be a GREEN fox! Aw, someone else took that idea. I know! I'll do something KUH-RAZY and be a PURPLE fox! aw, someone else took that idea..." Ad nauseum infinitum.
Perhaps the greatest hurdle is that 99% of 'furry characters' are completely one-dimensional - so much so that the only way to distinguish between them is to have some super special and unique 'thing' that a dozen other people have already thought of. A corollary to that problem being, many furries who make an effort to give their character some...well, character...don't know when to quit and/or get so caught up in defining the character that they try/want to BE the character. Resulting in basement dwellers who typefuck on Taps all day, or people like that creepy smelly guy who sews himself into his fursuit and never takes it off. |

Agreed - but then, that's looking at it from an artistic point of view. And most furries who make up characters do so for online roleplaying or typefucking; artistic concerns or original style doesn't enter into that at all. Other than in the sense that they want a character that is identifiably different from the other Furcadia or whatever characters. But often this means nothing more than a different colour tail tip or somesuch. The abundancy of furry hybrids is really just a result of furries lacking imagination, or at least not wanting to invest any great degree of imagination in their roleplaying/typefucking tools. |

My question is...
What the greatest number of species someone has crammed into one character? |

I recall seeing at least six or so species in one char before, but I forget the details, because the person that created it was an ass. |
