I think you've hit the nail on the head in your last statement. Yes, Zig-Zag is a fictional character, but hardly the first to garner such attention.

Why is ZZ famous? In my opinion, there are several reasons. For one, she is the flagship character of a truly talented artist who enjoys drawing her (hand cramped from drawing stripes and all) - and it shows.

Second, Zig-Zag has been drawn a lot...a LOT! There have been so many different interpretations and representations of her in both artwork and fiction by so many different people in the fandom that she's become more than just Max's creation (thanks to his generosity in sharing her so readily). This creates a deeper connection between the character and her fans and introduces her to more and more fans in the process.

Third, she has one of the most fleshed out characters in the fandom. This is greatly due to the efforts of Eric Schwartz - the "superfan" mentioned in your article. From what I've seen, a great deal of ZZ's personality has been built on the foundations of how Mr. Schwartz (likely coordinated with Max) represented her in the webcomic (and furry institution) "Sabrina Online".

Fourth, she came into being in the fandom at the right place and the right time.

Fifth, while the character has canon flaws and baggage as all interesting characters do, she's also consistently represented by canon sources as a strong, savvy, confident, and competent female lead. Undeniably, it's also a plus that she enjoys sex in all its myriad forms and splender and isn't ashamed about it as women are commonly expected to.

Now if I read a story where ZZ volunteered time at a local youth center or shelter, helping abuse survivors (like herself) get help or teaching Sex Education (like how to properly put on a condom), I'd be floored. It probably wouldn't be very sexy (though I'm sure ZZ could put her own unique spin on it), but it would add a nuance of my own to the character.

I have to wonder what it says about someone, that they rant and rave about how furries are skunk-***ing losers without a life who don't deserve any recognition or respect, and then go on and on about it for dozens of pages. I always wanted to ask them, "Buddy, if we're losers, then what does that say about some obssessed goon like you?"

I'm sure as heck not going to let these sad little individuals take time that could be better (and more happily) spent carefully illustrating spooey on Zig's striped backside.
