So I've been thinking of doing another article for the site, this one concerning the many overrated artists that the furry fandom worships. Since I try to distance myself from the fandom, I was wondering if any of my fellow CYDers know of any artists that are awful/mediocre/stupid/bitchy/insane and yet are getting serviced by the fans daily? So far I've got:

Jeremy Bernal

James M. Hardiman

And, uh, that's it. Granted, it's not much of a list, but I'm sure a few of you will contribute. Maybe.

Jessica Elwood is the latest superstar of the furry porn world. "She" popped up out of nowhere just a few months back on JAB with some decent art skills, and fans were made instantly.

I think "she" is overrated.

You have a huge number of people who all draw the same basic anime/sonic hybrid furries, which take no talent whatsoever (see Yiffer on VCL). I think Elwood borders on that.

I think Tauren Fox is damn overrated personally.

Too bad he squanders it in his sweaty, furry, zig zag obsession.

About bloody time. It's a good topic idea though. 'Fraid I don't have any ideas. If I wanted to get some I's have to do research and be somewhere other than the forums and all that stuff. What a hassle.

Ah, yes. Both famous and infamous.

First one that comes to mind is the girl who did the Reanimator flash (Zarla, I think). fchan is absolutely obsessed with her in the creepiest way possible.

San Renard, whose throngs of fans made it impossible to criticize his AOL speak and ten thousand chibi style VG Cats or Pokemon gangbang pictures that he flooded every image board in existence with. Thankfully, he got tired of his rabid fanbase and is now much more reserved.

Michele Light. Her "number of poses the artist is capable of drawing" to "amount of money the artist makes on conbadges alone" ratio is the most skewed I've seen. Jessica Willard is a lesser offender.

Finally, the obvious: Dr. Comet and Karabiner. Goldenwolfen, who is good but not ten grand good. EWS, Jim Groat, and Wookiee, who have all been done to death here.

Really, as un-CYD-ish as it is, it's a lot easier to think of underrated artists. Most of the popular artists in the fandom don't really deserve all the popularity they have.

Let's see...

Terrie Smith: always draws the same interechangable pin-up art.
Same stock poses, same stock furries. And all of her male characters are "pretty boy" Ghey, also does really bad herm porn as well.

Steve Martin: "Hey Guy Wanna See A Nakkid Bunny!".. All of his furry characters look like they have been dipped in latex...

Can't think of any others right now...

That's not so much a case of failure to deviate from one style as much as failure to deviate from one species. Plunk a request for anything non-equine and it will take him ages...

Michele Light. Her "number of poses the artist is capable of drawing" to "amount of money the artist makes on conbadges alone" ratio is the most skewed I've seen. Jessica Willard is a lesser offender.

At least Willard is finally drawing her characters with heads facing at angles now, for the longest time all of them had a weird Paper Mario feel to them with bodies at angles and heads either perfectly perpentdicular or parallel to the viewer.

Goldenwolfen, who is good but not ten grand good. EWS, Jim Groat, and Wookiee, who have all been done to death here.

Out of Luterman, Dark Natasha and other other 'realism' artists, the old fat girl Goldenwolf has to be the least creative. Wow... another native american wolf... Didn't see that one coming! At least the others have interesting expressions and a flair of humor.

I think it goes back to the fact that she (according to the gossipy furfags I talk with) doesn't really want to draw anthro art as much as 'were' art. Big irony when you consider who buys it, and that every 14 year old on Furcadia uses her images in their character descriptions. I guess she'd be better off hanging out with Ebonlupus assuming he has a few grand to spend on her art.

it's a lot easier to think of underrated artists. Most of the popular artists in the fandom don't really deserve all the popularity they have.

That can be said very truthfully of modern art in general though.

What rates the artist? The fans cheering on their journals... the amount of material they churn out?
The decades spent on the fandom? The female-ness of the newcomer? =)
The prices paid on furbid?

Is Collins on the fan charts? =) --And why dontcha droo more fun pics to CYD gallery, Jer! =)

I don't seemta be rated in any way... over or under...

Jeremy Bernal

hahahahahahhaHahahahahahaha

Are you serious? Every mention I hear of him is couple with OMG FAG SUCKS SUCKS DNP SUCKS LAWSUIT SASHA FUCK

I don't doubt that people like his art, but I've yet to find anybody who would actually "worship" Bernal.

As stated above, Dr.Comet is about the only one I can name. The /b/tards have this obsession with his art and it worries me.

Better to do an article on furries that deny to the death being furry. :)

Well, Marci McAdam's and Michelle Light's art styles are very similar (as is Terrie Smith's) but I can't recall any babyfur badges done by her. Closest thing babyfur-related I can think of that Light has done is this pic.

Meh, which fandom-popular furry artist isn't overrated? It's not like Schwartz or Bernal or Hardiman or whoever are really good when compared with the numerous top notch illustrators you can find outside furry fandom.

I was wondering if any of my fellow CYDers know of any artists that are awful/mediocre/stupid/bitchy/insane and yet are getting serviced by the fans daily?

I'm confused as to the term "fan service". I always thought it meant an artist delivering what his fans demanded, i.e. Winger makes a big-boobed, big-dicked herm as a joke, fans say "HOT! Give us more!" - and he does. Again and again and again.

How does a fan service an artist - other than paying money and saying "you rock"? (Yeah, I know this question is wide open for joke replies, go right ahead)

I'm pretty sure Stoneth is right - Light doesn't make "objectionable" material; all the characters she draws just happen to have a sort of young-and-innocent look. Which, btw, is why she's severely overrated - everything of hers looks alike...

I don't know about anyone else, but the rotation of four poses that Dark Natasha has been using for five years now.

http://www.darknatasha.com/darknatasha/webpages/furry/anthro2_.html

I can't remember any picture that she's done where the subjects aren't trying to look sexy, aren't in the direct center of the painting, or interacting with some other character in a way that doesn't have anything to do with sex.

Oh, and Michelle Light. Of course.

To be fair to Light, she has done pencil work for "Shanda the Panda" which actually has interesting characters, actual emotion and movement, but for whatever reason she seems content to make nothing else but pinup furries with the same expression and motionless pose over and over again. You'd think that an artist's personal art would be more expressive then his/her commissioned work. I guess not.

By our forum rules I'm now required to take a cheap shot at Micah.

Don't most furries have a knee-jerk 'ewwww, Winger's gross' reaction? Kelly Price is waaaay more appropriate - a Winger-sized fandom but several magnitudes less talent.

Isn't he appreciated because he runs Keenspace, sorry, ComicGenesis? No one could possibly like Stalag 99...

Rob Liefeld sucks donkey cock. The man can't draw proper proportions, compositions or frame layouts. Which Sakai can.

He's appreciated by a few people for his artwork. No, really. I'd wager he has as many furries in his fandom as Winger does (mind you, Winger's fanbase isn't relatively large to begin with), as he does draw commissions and has a viral species (second to chakats and a bit ahead of skiltaire). Just dig through his commission folder, every picture in there is for a 'OMG you're the best person evar!' mouthbreathing self-deprecating invertebrate. Also plenty of self-promotion on fchan and the like, which few other artists stoop so low to do.

Yes, people actually like Stalag 99. Or they say they do for free pixs. No accounting for taste in either direction.

CrazyBomber, I think you're far more qualified to do that. I'm about as active in the Latin American furry scene as a Jehovah's Witness is active in the US Army.

Only one I can think of would be Zorro Re. I'd say Rokefox as well, but he's more lolworthy than overrated.

Also, what about Flinthoof? Doesn't he have a crappy furry comic too?

Perhaps, but then again, since they're so underrated they're impossible to find among all the ego-stroking stuff.

Oh, I'd like to add Kacey Maltzman, all of her characters look more like they have Downs Syndrome rather than being cute.

Gideon Hoss

To be fair, this guy CAN draw other stuff, I've seen it. He simply doesn't probably because the big titted herms are what he gets congrats over. Who knows, in 5 more years maybe he'll be the next Smorky.

THANK YOU

Overrated? Likely, but surely better than most of the other furry stuff out there.

Flinthoof
Zorro Re
Joe Randel
Kacey Maltzman

I've been thinking about changing the topic to most overrated people of the furry fandom, and perhaps doing the article in installments.

I've also discovered the artist with the Ringtail mascot was Terrie Smith.

Sooo uhh, what exactly defines an overrated artist? I mean it seems we're listing anyone who has ever drawn a naughty picture. Is this the new puritan movement or something? Cuz if it is, I want one of those pilgrim hats.

An overrated artist is one who is average or even below average, but still has an army of sycophantic fans blind to their faults. Same goes for webcomics. Don't get me started on those :(

YAY, I Finally made the list, but wait. Exactly what do I do that would gain me the title of 'overrated' Anyway? What's the criteria. I don't even consider what I do to be furry art, (since I don't exactly only draw critters that have fur on them). I very rarely do adult art and I'm not exactly one known for tooting my own horn about my artwork either (Unless compairing myself to Collins, at which, there is no comparison).

I'd say my work has, if nothing, changed and improved as time goes by with a constant dedication towards improvement.

So, what get's me overrated and Donotsue and Estrugo not (both of which who produce far more work in the past couple of years than I have).

I would go with the multiple articles. It's hard too keep it funny and intresting with just a few quick barbs per artist on an article. It will be a reson to visit the main page if it's being updated regulary. If you feel up to it, go for it.

Mayhaps you're thinking of Zeriara, AKA Lemur Monster, the Xbox Lemur? Her avatar is a ring-tailed lemur. The only well-known ringtail (different species, dig it?) character I can think of at this very second is Terrie Smith's Chester.

Jesus Christ.

There was one artist I wanted to put on here, but I forgot her (I think it's a her) name. All I know is that she uses a Ringtail mascot. Anyone know her?

Oh god, Pink! How can I forget?

Jesus Christ is a furry artist?

Now you can buy his furry artwork CD!!! Only 19.99! Filled with quality sketches and colors! You can tell it's quality work because it has titties and angst! Also comes with "Hip, edgy" attitude with dark colors, poses from the matrix, man-whores, and dark colored matrix-posed man-whores!

BUT WAIT!

That's not all! Order now and get your ENTIRE CHILDHOOD IN PORNOGRAPHIC FORMAT!

That's right! Instead of discovering the horror of your childhood being pornogrophied one cartoon at a time, see every eighties cartoon personality doing the carpet mambo with every nineties cartoon personality all at once! Hey, it's not underage porn because they're just animal cartoon characters, right?! RIGHT!

SO ORDER NOW, HEATHENS!

Warning: "Jesus Christ's furry porn" comes with eternal damnation. "Eternal Damnation" clause may not be revoked or denied under any circumstances. Warranty void if product is opened, used, fapped to, or broken. People named "Sibe" are forbidden to purchase this or any other under penalty of SOAL RAEP. This purchase isn't illegal, but it should be.

P.S. Sorry if I actually offended anyone, but this one kind of started rolling on its own.

How about calling the furry artists "notorious" rather than "overrated?" I'm not saying that they aren't overrated but it would save having to explain just what makes them overrated.

well to be fair there are some that can draw fairly well and use photoshop

the problem is there are no professionals that cater to furries so anyone that draws things that interest them (mostly porn) get worshipped because they are the only game in town

He can actually draw humans at least, and does so very often.

But his commission prices are higher than Michael Manning!

Does he have any characters of his own or does he just destroy childhood memories.

I'm not debating that he can draw

It must be that I don't have very fond childhood memories. Or in my case I think I was just always fucked up.

Dr. Comet is Japanese though and draws Anime for videogames so I always figured that had something to do with it!

Or are you talking about Michael Manning now?

Apparently even one of those pink cat things is a copyrighted character.
Bagi I think

there was some movie back in the early 80's

Of course I suppose pornification of Pink cat women is to be expected

I think Comet does do a lot of work based around characters from comics by Osamu Tezuka (author of Astro Boy and like, a million other things).

I wouldn't call him overrated though. I mean, he delivers what he promises.

Oh, and about that Blackleapord guy. I really hate that superior attitude most furries take when they are criticized. His "I'm sort of happy to make the list" attitude would really only make me dislike him more as a pompous git.

READ THIS PLZ K THX:

So then. Apparently my little list has generated some contempt from the people in the fandom. Here's the thing: I'm not saying all the people on the list are overrated. Some of them are known to only a small group of people. To be honest, I even like the artwork of some of these people.

Let me explain: I'm not going to wail on every single entity I've put on my list of hate or whatever you want to call it. Once you read the articles (when they're posted) you're going to know whether I legitimately think someone is overrated or if I'm just making shit up. I'm just poking fun at and flaming as many people as possible.

Having said that, please understand that I am not "jealous" of these people, as some of my detractors would say. So I can't draw a stick figure. So what? I'm not an artist and I'll never be one.

To be honest, I'm a little tired of everyone calling CYD a "hate site". If you would actually read the "About" section you would see that most of us just like making fun. And what do you call what you're doing when you're spewing venom at us? Loving?

TO EBONYLEOPARD:

I realize I have no control over what you do or how you go about doing it, but I would appreciate if you wait and see what I'm going to say about you before you run off to LiveJournal and start talking about us crazy bastards. I'm uh, glad that you're happy about being on the list and all but please resist to urge to slam me until I have given you cause to do so.

BOTTOM LINE:

Stop taking everything so seriously. Go out and laugh at yourself. Get laid or something. Throw yourself off a building. Recycle. Don't talk to me.

I find it funny that a handful of us can name a few names we personally find to be overrated artists, mostly stating our reasons and when someone compiles a list all hell breaks loose on the LJs of those who made the list.

I mean hell, Shawntae, you're even registered here. You got a beef with your name on the list, defend yourself here. That worked excellently (drama-free, all parties sated) when Biohazard did it.

I mean fuck, if all those people are so above us why do they gripe every time we take a step?

Fake edit: we're just jealous because we can't draw.

Taking the time to explain how much you don't care is the same as saying "I'm typing this through tears, I care so much. Also, I'm naked."

I really really hate this argument. To everyone who says "you aren't allowed to criticize furry art unless you can draw!" I want to reply "So, since you're not a Hollywood filmmaker, I assume you've never voiced your dislike of a movie then?"

Sorry, Mr. Ironbadger, but everyone who's ever been in or observed the fandom for six months has seen approximately thirty gazillion pieces of furry art. We can tell by now when the anatomy is off, when the lighting is overdone, or if it's just uninspired, even if we can't draw ourselves.

The comments on Ebonyleopard's deviantart journal confirm the widespread furry inability to grasp what this site is about. They go on and on and on about how we hate. It's like saying laughing at a joke means you hate the joke.

There are some truly lolleriffic comments on CYD there:
That is pathetic in the level of racist forums and anti-infidel forums because they have nothing better to do then hate.

It's like pro life activists going around killing people.

The only left to do is to have the fandom flood the site and reconvert it as their own. Enough people would do that.

Of course, CYD is a laughable farce that took me some time to realize they were actually serious, but that makes the victory all the sweeter!

Victory? Evidently, someone won something and we lost. Maybe we were "flooded by the fandom"? Damn, I missed it!

Keep the comments coming, guys, we love them! I mean, we hate them! :D

Actually, I don't. Kinda think it's cool that some would bother to even think of my work in a way that would make them think it's overrated. I certainly don't, but then, I don't get that hung up with what people think of my art anyway. There are far more important things in the world and my life than the cartoon animals I draw.

Least I always stick to stuff I make up on my own. I can't remember the last time I drew a copywritten or trademarked character on my own (save for the Black History Month images I did on my DA and those were human characters) and I've certainly never done any that were of a sexual matter that I can personally remember.

So someone considers my work overrated. Shrug, what am I going to do about it, cry and say it's now. One thing I know for sure, once artwork is put out in the public, it's up to the public to make judgement on it good or bad, the artist has to live with criticism.

What would you have me do? Rant and rave about it? I'm sure that wouldn't win me any points. And well, that list has some pretty impressive artists on it, so why not think it's cool to be included . I mean, it's not like anybody here has actually really stated what makes someone overrated or not. Here, here's my work, comment about it as you see fit. Fair is fair, if something looks good, let me know. If something doesn't let me know but let me know why and what could be done to improve. Criticism is pretty pointless and of no use if there's nothing constructive behind it after all.

Shrug. Well, why worry? I mean, you really don't know me, my involvement in "furry" activities, especially recently is extremely low, save for the comic I do and the occassional profile art I post of the characters from it, I have darn near zero true involvement in furry fandom anymore at all. So anything you'd type would either be pretty short or exaggerated. I'm hoping not the other since that wouldn't be too fair, but then if you do, I can't stop you, I can just make comment about it and go on with the day.

Though I would ask, why really bother? Something like that seems like it's going to take a lot of your personal time, which I'm sure you probably be spending doing something better with. Most people, yeah, will probably get in a tizzy fit about it, I'll probably just shake my head and ask what happen to the CYD of the old days. (Seriously, this place doesn't quite have the same....zing, as it did when I first discovered it). Though I notice most of those people from then no longer post anymore.

Donny! We need some 'overrated' pig caricatures stat!

I don't have a beef. I actually think it's kinda cool, cause that means something about what I do has gained the attention to warrant being on the list at all. Heck,if anything I was a bit disappointed not being included in the inital list.

Eh, you yourself might not be all that into being jealous, but the overall commentary left here sort of has that air about it. And just to note, its not just furries that give this kind of reaction, its artists in general.

Oh, I'm not at all sure that weird_guy was being completely serious with that list, but it certainly provoked some reaction.

Personally, I would say Ebonyleopard is underrated. His art is certainly better than some of the jokers in the mainstream comicbook world who have their fan followings. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he managed to escape into the world of "big" comics one day. Heh, plus of course he deserves a bonus score for drawing the only ape character in the whole fandom :) But hey, where would we be if we started on about the stuff we like!?

Also also: Ken Singshow for "underrated" as well.

I think Ebonyleopard has a lot going for his art, other than a few anatomy issues, so I wouldn't personally lump him in the "overrated artist" category. Plus, I don't recall seeing much porn by him. Not that I have a problem with the occasional tame adult art, but the use of smut to porn one's way to popularity is what triggers my "overrated" alarm the most.

I really don't understand why people are afraid to draw apes. I don't buy they, they're too human looking argument, cause there's all kinds of different mechanics that go into drawing a gorilla's face than it does a human. But then, I like drawing anthros that other people don't bother to. Right now, I've been challenged to draw a sexy roach (I lost a friendly artist bet). The only thing about it I'm not looking foward to is the visual research on roaches I have to do before I start drawing (I always research the animals I'm drawing).

You may or may not have read the article but if you did you would've noticed that I didn't call it "THE MOST OVERRATED ARTISTS EVAR". It started out like that but I think I'm going to drop that and just stick to artists in general.

My mom once observed that to draw a Sonic character, you just take the standard "Sonic character" model and give it one distinct feature to signal what species it's supposed to be. In this case, the antennae.

 Yoshi vore porn? *dies* How in the world could anyone see anything sexy in Yoshi? (Not even gonna get into the vore aspect... blech)

Back on the subject of overrated artists... I don't think you necessarily have to be a bad artist to be overrated. My definition of overrated is when I look at it and go, yeah, that's pretty good, while everyone else is going SQUEEEE OMG IT'S TEH GRATEST EVAH!!!11!! and the price is skyrocketing out of the range I'm willing to pay for frivolous things.

What flame war? He's just, well, an overrated artist. I'm not saying he's an evil person or something.

In addition to drawing things (at least semi-realistic and in pseudo 3d), he should also try a thiner lineart. As I said, I don't care if his furries are better than other furries on dA (which they btw aren't really, or maybe I just watch only the best "anthro" artists out there, so maybe a "better then average" or something, I don't know).

Oh, and also get some real coloring instead of MSPaint(?).

Just going through the list a few pages back and I noticed Goldenwolf and Dark Natasha on there. Why are they considered overrated? I'm not that familiar with a lot of Natasha's work, but I know Goldenwolf is good at what she does...or is it just the cliche aspect of the subject matter that you're getting at here?

In my case, it's because of Eyes of the Night, which sold for $10,000 (no joke!) at Further Confusion. The picture is well-done, but for ten thousand dollars furry art needs to be better than that, especially since there's only a tiny, tiny demographic that appreciates mystical pseudo-Native-American therianthropic stuff, let alone anything "furry" at all.

And with that one sale she made it out of the starving artiste majority, 98% of whom, in all of the "arts" make only $3000 or less per year on thiere artistic skills. Yea I was at that FC where it sold for $10k, was atteding the auction at the time, mostly to watch the action. Was bought by some furry who made a ton of money durring the dotcom bubble, I forget who. but still lots of money for that.

Lance Rund, IIRC.

Goldenwolf... a 'starving' artist. Oh my, that's rich. She is good at what she does, but an artist's ability and value is determined by how much they can do, not at how well they can do their one little thing, or their popularity.

Goldenwolf refuses to expand from her current path of painting were and native americanish stuff. I think I saw one elf in an image of her's, once. Whoopie. She wants to paint that which has little to no fanbase; nature and were art outside the fandom, since she (as I am told) loathes the yiffy/scritchy/let's-be-frivolous-and-gay aspects of furries, yet comes to cons to help pay her bills for the rest of the year.

She can draw and paint werewolves extremely well, if you enjoy static poses and cliched settings, but she hardly lives up to the status of art goddess the furries have bestowed upon her, especially considering her love/hate relationship with them (she should post on here).

That friends, is why she is overrated. Although I think Dark Natasha may also be put on the same pedestal by your average furry, she has more heart in her work, is FAR less stuck up, less loatheful towards that which feeds her and doesn't take herself as seriously. She makes better stuff, and won't give you the evil eye because your conbadge has a gheyphox in it.

I smell a flame war...*grabs the popcorn*

Yes, odd how it takes a japanophile to try and tell off a competant furry artist on samuri sword drawing. A bit like a Trekkie and a Star Wars dork arguing over the propulsion inaccuries in a fanfic of the others.

I'd never fav any of his pics as for now. He can't draw properly, and his coloring looks like this online Make-a-Hero game few years ago.

So-called "Anthro artists" I watch:

http://goldenwolf.deviantart.com/ "of course"
http://ursulav.deviantart.com/ pro artist, afair
http://kenket.deviantart.com/
http://kerembeyit.deviantart.com/ kinda, he draws werevolves alot
http://jaxxblackfox.deviantart.com/ Halo fag
http://kyoht.deviantart.com/

and few others I watch for the other stuff so don't remember.

Also http://daveykinsfoxfire.deviantart.com/ for being so good in being so bad.

Fuck furries. Man, you can't draw THINGS.

How would you suggest they be done better? (And if you want to fuck a furry, that's ok by me. Every guy has their...thing). And I guess drawing THINGS can be difficult from time to time. What does your THING look like?

Since when is it a requirement to always only draw a historically correct sword ?
The characters displayed ain't historic figures and he could put a polygon into their hands for all I care.

That aside.
The second pic made me laugh out loud, nonetheless.
What a bearded lady.
Like a 80 year old, bald monk with tits.

I internet-knew Jaxx Blackfox when I was 11 or 12. She drew my silly-looking Sonic fan character and I was so grateful that I reciprocated with a no-talent pic of her character. Memories...

So-called "Anthro artists" I watch:

http://goldenwolf.deviantart.com/ "of course"
http://ursulav.deviantart.com/ pro artist, afair
http://kenket.deviantart.com/
http://kerembeyit.deviantart.com/ kinda, he draws werevolves alot
http://jaxxblackfox.deviantart.com/ Halo fag
http://kyoht.deviantart.com/

and few others I watch for the other stuff so don't remember.

Also http://daveykinsfoxfire.deviantart.com/ for being so good in being so bad.

I watch half of those too, and I've just started really loving Ursula v and Kyoht's work. Their watercolur work is really inspiring, and I just really noticed Kenket after seeing her painting for the Beastiary card project a few artists were doing.

I had forgotten about that painting by Goldenwolf that sold for an obcene amount! But hey, even if she doesn't want to branch out in her subject matter, I'd say she's doing just fine if she sells them for that much, justified or not.

Heh, well, she is a monkey. They aren't the cutest critters on the planet. I like my morphs looking as realistic in a cartoony way as possible. For the life of me though, I can't remember the specific species of primate she is.

Jesus Christ, dude.

and so on.

Now look at your swords again.

And if you can't afford a manual, at least just LOOK ON THE INTERNET how these things look like. (Yes, you just got fursecuted, tell everyone about it.)

Well, FYI, the swords the monkey is holding actually were taking from pictures I found on the internet (and really, if you're going to suggest books for reference never suggest a book with drawings in them, particularly anime ones. A real photo book works better, otherwise you're only learning how someone else draws something real). As for the one the panda is holding, I made it up. The point of that sword is it can morph into any type of weapon the holder thinks of. So yeah, it's not exactly traditional looking.

And no offense, but I'd wager I could afford far more books than you could. But thanks for the suggestions none the less (also, I already own thos books and pretty much the whole line of the anime books, bought for reference for the kids where I work).

I'm always open to seeing your work as reference, I'm one with an open mind and willing to be taught.

As for the coloring, if you hadn't noticed in the descriptions of those character profile pics, they were colored with flats just to have a quick color reference guide for doing more detailed work. Sort of like how people will make the circle color swatches on a modelsheet. So I'm not exactly trying to get all detailed with shadows, midtones, and highlights on those pictures. That's not their function. As for not being the best anthro artist, well duh, I've never claimed to be. Nor to I try to be anything other that what I do.

Like M_Estrugo, I really don't consider my work furry either, more sci-fi traditional superhero stuff. I do the type of cartooning I grew up liking, funny animals and superheros. And I'm not going to get into a flame war, because there's nothing to get into a flame war about. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I can tell when someone is writing for effect anyway. If he doesn't like the work, well, he just doesn't like it. Not like his opinion is going to stop me from drawing what I like.

And finally, FYI, the coloring is done with photoshop 7. If you look at other finished stuff in the gallery, I'm capable of doing more detailed colorwork when I want to. Am I the best at it, heck no. As it is, all I know about digital coloring I've taught myself and I know I have a long way to go. I'd say I'm improving and that's really all an artist can ever hope to do. Continue to evolve and avoid getting stagnet.

I'd scan the couple of books about East Asian weaponry I've got from that collection, but my scanner is so worn it can't recognize colors properly anymore. (Er, anyone got a spare scanner -or the funds to get one- to send to a funny animal cartoonist?)

Mff. I'll have to look elsewhere.

Addendum, put after I read the message coming immediately before this post: I understand Shawntae's position about the fandom. The fact somebody does stuff that is appreciated on the fandom (talking animals, so to say) doesn't immediately mean he's 'one of us' as some people within the fandom think. He may even draw stuff for it, but, as long as he doesn't feel identified with it, he isn't a furry.

I've heard somewhere that a furry fan is anyone willing to accept that tag. So be it.

Wow, you know I've never thought of that before. I wonder if the fact that all my favourite artists are female (even some more not included here) has anything to do with how I see their work subconciously? Weird.

Oh, and I despise those 'How to Draw Manga' books too. and I just opened ANOTHER one that I got for Christmas! anyone want it? :/

I guess I'd like to, if I don't have one already :) There are good and bad in the series (like the one about big robots was so outdated, and I didn't like horror one too).

And what I meant is: Female furries - few; the best furry(?) artists - all female.

why do you think that is? I'm sure there's a logical reason of this somewhere... especially since its to my understanding that most of the best artists in the world are male, so why the apparent exception in the furry lot?

My wild guess here; Maybe because an overhelming majority(?) of male furries are in just for jailhouse buttsechs and crazy fetishes and/or pedophilia (or just any social acceptance), while many of these few females are in just for the actual art?

I have this recurring idea that a majority of the straight females in the fandom are batshit insane. Not all of course, but I seen so many of those same socially akward teenagers on LJ that it makes me feel somewhat bad for them.

I can actually day that 90% of my female, online, anthro artist friends have mental problems, but it probably makes they're art more imaginative more than anything else.

Errr... I thought we were talking about "famous furry artists"? And in my opinion the only not "overrated" I know are female, even if there's few females in the furry.

Well, some of them would say "not furry" too, bet never mind.

Donoutse: I don't think you're "overrated", because I never heard about you oustide of this forum (and still not very much). But I think you're cool :)

Ahhhh yes, the angsty teen girl furry artists. Deviantart is a haven for them...them, and their technicolor huskies.
I swear, one day, I'm going to come up with a PLAID husky character and see what kind of trend I can start.

Wierdguy, so you're going to do 1 artist per article in this series? I think 3 artists per article would do well. The 3 artists in question having something in common. You could talk about overrated artists in one then talk about the loser nobodies no one would know about in another, to get them some publicity and inject some wholesome goodness into the creamy yiffy grabbag of delights of furry porn.

Donotsue is perfect in all ways. Now that I know about him and his genius, I can clearly put furry porn into perspective... It's all skat.

I think Jeremy Bernal is an ok artist. I have a few of his pics that are'nt yiffy and full of spooge. Though alot are.

Stoneth is underrated because I've never heard of him or seen any of his art work... that I will now like without having seen it because he is a member of CYD.

I have five or six in this first article; they're fairly short because I have a lot of stuff to go through. Realize that the first part is going to be rough until I can find the direction I want to go in.

I would've had it up sooner but we've been having problems.

I wouldn't say they are flawed, I'm just saying, for my own personal reference, if I'm going to use books for stuff like that, I'd rather use books of photos of the real thing than drawings. It's like, I have a lot of anatomy books, basic human animal, both drawn and with real photos. Most of the ones I personally use for drawing though are the ones with pictures of real human muscles and skeletal structures in them, because I've found that books with drawn references in them will look totally different from one another due to the differing artists' styles. So you're really learning from reference from that particular artist's way of drawing rather than what the thing you are drawing really looks like.

The DK book Anatomy for the Artist is a great real photo refernce book, it's about $45, but it's real think with great photos of both male and female anatomy and nudes. For reference books that are drawn, I'd suggest the Dynamic series (I believe there are three books, anatomy, hands, and one that combines the two.) For decent animal references the Simon & Schuster's Guide to (Mammals, Dogs, Birds, Cats, ect) are really good.

I kind of had a wacky idea about art that the artist put forth what he saw, maybe not so much when making something photorealistic or as real as possible. You know... the way it is from your eyes. But thats good too ebony.

I think I saw that DK book yesterday, but alas, I couldn't afford it because I spent all my money on my yearly pair of shoes D:

I think when it comes to reference, real life drawing, photos AND drawing all work equally well actually. You shouldn't stick to just one kind of reference either way.

Drawn references by other artists can help in letting you see how they use marks/line/brush strokes in order to achieve the image, while photos allow you to obviously see it yourself. And real life drawing is invaluable.

But the tiny demographic is the whole point. The smaller the audience, the less likely someone will buy your picture - but if you hit that audience's tastes just right, you can get a very high price (provided of course the demographic has money). As art, a picture like "Eyes of the Night" is utterly pedestrian, but as a fetish, it's head-on for one small subsection of furrydumb. And under the right circumstances, they're willing to shell out big money for that. It's just like how you can but vanilla porn DVDs cheap, while very specialised fetish porn DVDs are costly. That Goldenwolf picture caters right bang pow to someone's fetish (not necessarily in the sexual sense of the word), so he shelled out the $$$$$.

Getting back on topic, there are two that come to mind: Chalosan and Karabiner.

Chalosan is some freelance artist or something from El Salvador and is basically worshipped on Deviantart. Basically all he draws are big-breasted furries with anime eyes. While granted, he is good at drawing, hes no better than the thousands upon thousands of anime artists in the world, and he only has hundreds of pageviews per day because he draws furries.

And then theres Karabiner OH SWEET JESUS I HATE KARABINER. Sure his art has painting like quality to it but wow that guy is seriously just deranged. This was discussed in a thread I posted a few months back, but come almost NOBODY speaks out against all the atrocities that are prevelant in his work? Lets see, we've got ultra-detailed dog dicks, painstakingly rendered for hours in photoshop dog dicks, along with renamon and other remotely furry characters being raped by animals, small anime children being pumped full of jizz by giant bipedal lions, and his insane obsession with digimon. OH YEAH MAN BIPEDAL BLUE DINOSAURS MAKE ME WANNA FUCK
I can give him credit for some his non-pornographic work, which is probably some of the only professional furry art (if you can even say that) I've ever seen, despite his massive hard-on for animal genitalia.

And theres this one other artist I saw on deviantart who really fucking amazes me. Hes some generic Sonic artist, except he renders his generic Sonic drawings in amazing and unrivaled detail. Except for the fact that they're fucking Sonic characters- IMO if almost all of your artwork is devoted (or drawin in the style) to Sonic art, you really dont have any artistic merit. That's something that's always pissed me off about furries- so many of them have this obnoxious obsession with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Probably not well known enough to be underrated or overrated, which is a good thing. Most furry artists, like metal bands and Alienware, stop improving once they become mainstream.

I think your art has improved quite a bit personally.

That Goldenwolf picture caters right bang pow to someone's fetish (not necessarily in the sexual sense of the word), so he shelled out the $$$$$.

And that just makes them even more overrated. I mean, if you were to say "I know this artist who sold a painting for ten grand", most people would react with "Wow, she's damn good." But, as you point out, that's not the case: she just does well in a niche.

Well-known furry artists are like Thomas Kinkade. Every serious artist hates Thomas Kinkade not because he sucks - most will admit he's pretty good - but he's nowhere near good enough to deserve making the money he does. He just happens to be pretty good at making feel-good countryside paintings, which have far greater selling potential than art that actually means anything. Hence, overrated.

Kids, I think we've learned a lot today. 'Overrated' is a subjective term, but relies most on the relative level of fan attention to artistic merit or talent. The entire body of artists within the fandom cannot all be the most overrated at once. Sometimes we pay more attention to things because we don't care about them. And after so many years and so many posts Ebony still cannot work the fucking forum.

And a good eight pages of this pissy infighting forum drama LJ-emo bullshit... well, I guess we've learned some of us are still furries at heart.

Speaking of not knowing how to work the forum, can someone please instruct me on how to make my quotes have the proper "So and so wrote:" thing?

Simply quote someone's post as if to reply and look at the code it autopastes in.

On topic: I agree about Karabiner. But I'm willing to wait.

That's something that's always pissed me off about furries- so many of them have this obnoxiou
s obsession with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Well, for the record, Karabiner doesn't use photoshop he uses Painter and the time it takes him to complete something he draws is amazingly fast, under 2 hours actually. And to be overated I'd figure you'd have to be attempting to get the attention, which he reallys doesn't and very rarely posts his work publically, which then I'm going to assume you must be searching out his artwork to find it.

As for the Sonic art, shrug, maybe that person just likes Sonic. Who's to say he's even a 'furry' artist. I reallyth ink that lable get's thrown around to quickly and fast for anybody that draws an anthro character. I man, if you guys do it and don't want to be called furries, they how is someone else going to not be labeled it either? And frankly, this whole thing is silly cause no one is really listing criteria at all for being considered overrated. If anything the list just seems to be a bunch of people who draw really well, but for some reason or other there's an axe to grind against them for no other reason than they draw what they draw real well. No personal connection to the artist in a way of what they do perosnally at all. It's like, hey Chris Sawyer draws good anatomy on anthros, he's overrated.

the thing with Karabiner is that he is good.... but also japanese and furry.

to be fair apparently he no longer draws digimon porn... lovingly rendered dog dicks are another story.

Weird Guy == WINNER.

A very good start, kind sir. I was hoping the first part would've been longer, but perhaps it is wise to save some of 'teh funnay' for later instead of spilling it all at once.

I must wonder though - given the sheer number of artists we've "reccomended" in this thread, just how many parts is this article going to be?

The article needs pictures (or links to galleries, at the least) badly. I'm not a furry, so I don't know who most of these people are without doing some research; I'm sure there are others like me reading, as well.

Though... I probably shouldn't be asking to see any of that, from the descriptions...

Nice article. Really brightened up a shitty night for me (yes, it was that shitty). Only... any chance of a *small* sample from each artist? Because, compared to you guys, I'm clueless about all the 'personalities' out there.
(And I wish I had hundreds of rabid fans when I did this. Tens would have sufficed. But I suppose I'd've only been dragged deeper into the quagmire)

I did see your gallery today on DA and considered it, but your art's very good in my opinion and you have the right number of pageviews and comments to reflect that :) So well done for being...'just-right-rated' or something...

He said, on a forum that had an 'Atrocity Archive'.

Well, links, then. Something so us sheltered people can choose to click, recoil with an exaggerated 'Ew!', and never click again.

I am scarred for life by the upside-down masturbating leopard.

I don't know which is scarier... when they draw them with human genitalia, or when they draw them with lovingly detailed and painstakingly accurate animal genitalia.

Twelve pages have gone by and no mention of Inuki and her wall-eyed japtoon pedobunny porn yet?

UGH UGH UGH. Her art is so ugly and creepy, but she has so many fans. D:

Alot of her recent art is nothing worse than most of the things you'd see on 4chan's /y/, but there still is no doubting shes some creepy german pedophile with an unhealthy obsession of semen-leaking assholes.

I've never heard of Inuki before, much less seen her art. Links in the Atrocity Archive ASAP, please!

You will wish you haven't asked.

Man, there are so many lines everywhere you can't hardly see what's going on in those... is everything transparent?

(Yes, I'm asking dumb questions to distract myself from the horror)

Damn my curiosity! Furry pedophilia blaaaargh.

Going by this, Inuki's not overrated, she's a sick fuck.

Gideon Hoss
Daniel Renard
James Donaldson
Goldenwolf
Ecco
James M. Hardiman
Kelly Price
Sara Palmer

What is this a list of? Just out of curiosity since I'm on it. I mean, I realize, duh, artists. But are they the overrated ones? The more 'famous' ones? The ones with bad reputations? The 'more talented' ones?

... And in any of these cases, how did -I- get on there? I didn't realize anyone outside of my circle of friends paid any attention to me. I'm like the queen of noninvolvement. o.o

Well actually, I lied. She draws nothing like you... she is a very talented woman and she's going places. You draw alot like her goth punk sister who is alot less talented, will go nowhere with her art and not as attractive, though I did go out with her... but only to get to her talented sister. Which I did!

Is this because getting a 'newbie' angry is the generally accepted way to gain social points in this forum? It seems to be pretty standard in a lot of internet groups, not just this one.

Of course, saying 'I lied' and then going over the top like that is a sure giveaway. More subtlety next time. ;)

Some people hate everything.
Some people just hate those things that they feel are cool to hate.
I draw for myself,
And occasionally for people who do like my art.
So that's fine with me.

No, it isn't. MagnusSkin is being a fuckwit. The general way of this forum is to have civil discussions with anyone who comes in unless they behave like idiots - which, granted, some people do. You didn't.

MagnusSkin, there's a not-so-subtle difference between criticizing people's art and throwing personal insults at them. Cut the crap, plz.

It's my oh-so-serious gothfurry wuv logo. Isn't it cute?
I love campy aesthetics, especially the frilly gothy look.

My name, in Hebrew, has the syllable for 'Lion' in it, so there's been a lion motif in my work since I was a kid. Sounds like a pretty typical thing to say, doesn't it? But it's true, blame my mom.

Though Seraph doesn't sound like a goth dumbass

Oh, I am, totally, I'm so gawth I crap bats, and their little claws make my butt bleed, so I write poetry about the pain, while sitting in the dark listening to the Cure and trying to drink Absinthe green because I'm a twit who doesn't know how to percolate it. :D

Seraph,

If it makes ya feel better, I think I may have some use for your art.

If it's spanking your monkey, I don't mind, but I'd prefer not to know. ;)

Seriously, you're better off not really worrying about it and just grin at the whole thing. Trust me, it doesn't make much sense anyway for you to get too worked up about it.

Just look at it like this, apparently you're too good for your own good, or at the least, good enough that a lot of people like your work to the point someone on here noticed it. (That or just remember where this particular furry drama is coming from).

I believe it's what people call a symbol or icon often used as a form of graphic representation of a person, place, company , or entity of some type. Since this one uses both imagery and text it would be considered in graphics terms a Combination Mark.

I'm not worrying or upset about this at all. But it's true, I'm not satisfied with my artwork, and I want to improve myself. While I can't afford to take serious art classes yet, it's definately in my to do list.
I'm slowly becoming so inured to furry drama that I don't really do the pavlovian thing anymore.

Well, maybe realizing you need improvement (like myself) you may not be considered overrated or whatever. Shrug, still trying to figure out what makes someone so to begin with. If anything you're in a damned if you do damned if you don't. You either Draw well, which cause a lot of people to like your work, which seems to instantly get you labeled overrated to no fault of your own, or you suck so bad your work should be on a fridge and if you still had a bunch of people liking it, then yeah, that should make you overrated, or if you draw ok and brag about it all over the net, that should also make you overrated. But many on the list seem to mind their own business with the only sin of some of these guys here happen to have seen it and remembered your name.

Frankly though, this is a rather weak for a CYD thread. Seen better in the past, but those guys are long gone (and frankly much more fun). But at least a certain someone doesn't seem to be around anymore. Now that guy was always good for a laugh and good read. (But do not speak his name or he will appear like Beetlejuice except you don't have to say it 3 times).

As for that How to Draw Manga Samauri book, do not buy that if you want to learn about drawing stuff like swords. Its really pretty useless for that usage.

Some other good books on drawing anatomy are: Drawing the Female Nude by Giovanni Civardi, How to Draw the Human Figure An Anatomical Approach by Louise Gordon, Visualizing Muscles A New Ecorche Approach to Surface Anatomy by John Cody, M.D. (Great for male muscle anatomy with good photos). For animals any of DK's Ultimate Guide to any animal are good, Animal Fact File Head to Tail Profiles of More than 90 Mammals by Dr. Tony Hare, and Zoobooks.

@Ebonyleopard:
I'm fairly happy with my grasp on human and animal anatomy. I have several books, took some biology classes (playing with bones is fun), and I'm not scared to look up nekkid photos for reference.
It's more technique and polished-ness that I'm lacking.
P.S. I sent you an email.

Muh? Is it "be needlessly assholish" day at the CYD forum? If you don't have anything better to contribute than grammar nazi-ing, please shut up. While there's a lot of deliberate fuckery around these parts, it'd be nice to uphold some standards.

Jesus Christ ?
Well, he has this lion character that some furries draw and I hear his name quite often.
He has a whole group of followers called 'christian furs' or something.
Never seen any of his art though.

not entirely off-topic...
I just found someone who I consider to be under-rated, which is quite rare in the furry fandom.

here: http://starfinder.deviantart.com/

although if you click on her pageviews, it shows that she went from having around 100 views per day to in the thousands as soon as she got a Daily Deviation. She's the next hot thing in the fandom in my opinion.

Not if the wolfs sell and they will.
There is no doubt about her talent.
But she is also highly into the commerce and shows no hint of being original.
I doubt she has any interest in anthro art other than to apeal to the same target group as Goldenwolf and make a sale.

It all balances out to 0 points for me.
I'd rather have some cartoonists work on my wall than these photoreal boredoms.

I saw this person's art like 2 years ago and never looked again because it was all just pictures of teenaged boys she knew turned into antro wolves. She's good and I'm glad she adopted a new shtick, although she has yet to do any different species.

Why does a lizard have a navel? Or, rather, what appears to be 2 navels, one which is too high and the other which is too low?

She's good and I'm glad she adopted a new shtick, although she has yet to do any different species.

I'm half glad for that. I see she's familiar with the furry fandom, in that she has at least one con badge in her gallery, and this means she may have already seen what potential for money there is in that.

Whenever I see a sexualized anthropomorphic animal done in a realistic style, it makes me wonder. It just looks awkward; it is too close to the line between finding anthros attractive because they are humanlike, and finding them attractive because they are animal-like.

Enh, I was trying to portray how I figured a big fat gut would look on a lizardman (which may or may not be an actual reptile,) since lizards, or at least some lizards, have that belly-seam thing going. The lower 'navel' is just a dimple.

As for that How to Draw Manga Samauri book, do not buy that if you want to learn about drawing stuff like swords. Its really pretty useless for that usage.

Appologies if this guy has been mentioned before

http://themagictalkingwall.sheezyart.com/

AKA Psycho the Hedgehog

It seems that this guy is worshiped in the sonic fan comunity almost as much as J.Axer

The only difference is that unlike J.Axer, Psycho has a SERIOUSLY bad attitude

He's big in the sonic the hedgehog circles (thought his popularity might have faltered since that last time I came into contact with him), but seeing as his art hasn't improved since the first time I saw him (8 years ago) I think his slobbering fandom is overatted...I mean I used to read his sprite comics...but...you know...I grew up and found better comics to read

So, yeah, he's overated in personality and in art ability in my humble opinion

not entirely off-topic...

Starfinder's work, IMHO, is boring. Oh yay, rendered lifeless wolfboys staring at the viewer.

Besides, everyone knows her best skill evar is stealing money from commissioners and never finishing their art. :)

her art reminds me of shirts I've seen on sale at tourist locations in Canada and other mountanous locations that have wolves

Sorry, but to me wolves aren't mysterious and magical...they're horny, vicious, bloodthirty, baying bastards who hang about in grubby packs

and people ask me why I prefer whales

COMMENTS!

Dude, this "criticism" is even more pathetic than the discussion in vcl_horrors. Come on. Geeze. I thought CYD was supposed to be elite snideness.

Agreed with Eqypt, the blasting of Steve Martin was only cursory at best and the inclusion of unknowns like Jess K was needless filler.

I think it's interesting that you give a cursory glance to everyone else compared to the little rant you went on about Dave Hopkins. If you wanted another rant about him, I'm sure they would have obliged you.

Seriously, you guys take the fandom-and yourselves-way to seriously. Get a life.

Ripping of Xmen into furry designs is kind of gontermanian in a sense.
Its nice to be inspired by something but no artist should copy in an all to obvious manner.

Who the dickens is Urkle?

Maybe british television was not the place for a soap like "Family Matters".

On a slightly different note, I just remembered this gaining me some notoriety last year.
I'm not sure if people were amused or offended by it, but it certainly was funny to me. Alls I know, is I got a lot of pageviews in the week after it was posted, and a couple of people telling me it turned up on Fchan.

It's indeed the infamous furry con thing: You get "scritched", i.e. groped by furries (complete with dreaded fanboy stink) who think invading total strangers' personal space is acceptable. But hey, they also think being vocal in public about their unattainable desire to have sex with hermaphroditic multi-dicked skunk-fox hybrids is acceptable.

You should be - it's based on a true story (albiet surreally).

No...I'm scared of clicking on it.

It's both work and brain safe. Click away.

Amusingly, it didn't happen at a con, I think that makes it even scarier.

I remember at AC '02, on saturday night there were, like, 10 cops out in the back entrance for a phurry supposedly hitting another phurry with an emtpy whiskey bottle and shattering it across his head. Was anyone else there to confirm the rumor? I mean, half the convention was sitting out there oogling and rubbernecking, including the fursuiters. The cops had quite a baffled look across their faces, seeing all of us retards standing there with tails and junk. This was way before the CSI thing as well. Maybe this is where the original inspiration came from?

Actually, I've never been to a real con. I've been to two near-cons. One was a local furry Halloween party, with about 20 people, and the other was the mini-con furry camp called 'Feral', with about 60 people, to which I went for free because they wanted me to teach an art class.

I THINK the first one took place at the halloween party. It was just some person who really wanted to hug and scritch me, being as I am cuddly-looking. Yes, you can read that as 'fat'. You see my photo, you can tell. Anyways, he got kind of upset when I flat out denied him.

The other was an online thing. Aside from those two real life experiences, all of my involvement with Furry has been online, and I've decided, that's where it belongs. And it was just this... guy... who decided that since he and I were the same 'species', that we were destined to be 'mates'.

There's also a dose of this guy from IRC called 'Yiffywlf'. If anyone knows who this guy is, no explanation is needed.

Am I the only one who absolutely HAAAATES what furries have done to that poor word? It used to be trendy Brit/Aussie slang for a friend, but after spending some years around the fandom, its use brings up visions of misplaced emotion and soon-to-dissolve-in-a-puff-of-drama virtual relationships. And fat sweaty guys going at it.

I once dated a furry, and whenever they referred to me as their 'mate', I died a little inside. :(

Oh, using the term 'mate' to mean lover or partner isn't exclusive to Furry, I mean, there's 'lifemate' or 'soulmate' and things like that...

But I've encountered furries who use 'mate' to mean the same thing as 'fuck'. As in 'he mated her hard against a wall'. THAT made my mind cry.

The artist in question could be the nicest in the world; I'm still ripping the piss out of them.

Let me clear up a few things: Some of the artists I'm bitching about I actually like. Some of them are talented. Some of them aren't well-known. But I have to piss and moan and call them idiots since that's what I'm doing for all of them.

You can tell if I really do think an artist is overrated. Many times I'm just indifferent.

I still say I'm the most overated artist, why the only person who's a bigger hack than me is that wonderful gene splice of Urkle,Eric Schwartz, and Brian O'Connell, the one the only,EEEEEBBBBBBBBOOOOOOONNNNNNYYYY LEEOOOOOPAAARD!!!!!!!!

Hey dude, don't hate on me because I can actually draw. And, I didn't exactly have to go the route of gaining any attention by doing tons of porn either.

And sorry if this seems like a flame, but, I still laugh everything you and the word artist are mentioned in the same sentence. Just give fair warning when Radio is going to be publishing something of yours so I can save the cash, cause that's a furry burn I can do without.

If I'm considered overrated it's not because of anything I am intentionally going out there trying to do, because I'm full aware of where I need work at and have been showing signs of improvement annually, yet you've gotta be twice my age and if anything you're work has gotten worst the older you get.

I am really starting to think that this is a case of Jesus Syndrome here.

Hate the fans, not the person. The artists who are overrated aren't all bad artists, but it's the fans, and only the fans, who have the power to make them 'overrated'.

I think the hammer hit the nail on that one.

I'm sure, to Jerry, that's a very well laid out paragraph detailing a mortal blow of wit.

But on behalf of those of use not blessed with his incredible mind, I'm going to have to make a bannable offence and say...

Jerry, first of all, what are you smoking? I'd resigned to leave you be, until you mention me in one of your poorly written, cap lock challenged, posts. If anyone's part of the cause of how people view furry fandom and the anthropomorphic genre it's you. You're one of the 'forefathers' of furry porn into the mainstream of the consciousness of comic fans and you were doing that before I ever even knew what the heck furry was (which was until 1996) and ironically was included in the first furry porn I ever encountered.

The fact you're even on here complaining about what you helped create has got to be the biggest joke there is. When ever someone says furry and their response is, isn't that like animal porn, you must magically get a golden ring, cause you helped in that big time with your Bambi (Bambi of all anthro characters to base one's art off of for the purpose of porn or sexual innuendo, Bambi?) bondage chicks. Which, I'll also have you know helped introduce me to the very concept of bondage, cause I had no clue what the heck your deer were wearing back then.

Regardless what people say about the superficial look of my work, without actually experiencing it, at least I'm attempting to take the art form of anthropomorphics and it's genre in a different direction, trying to be one of those that attempt to bring it back into the light to the mainstream by constantly trying to improve on the art form (with constantly trying to improve my own art) and trying to do something with it that really hasn't been done with it before in the way I'm attempting. If it a success or failure, that's up to the critics to decide. Some will say it's great, some will say it's terrible, but bottom line, I and like a few other artists that post here are at least TRYING. You on the other hand can't even have the decency to finish you work when it's going to be published and sold for money to the public with stories that at least make some kind of sense. The fact you've gained fans with such poor work quality (particularly in your horrible anatomy porn) is the true definition of being overrated.

As for your Schwartz and Gallacci reference, what, have I meet you at a confurence some 10 or 15 years ago and did some mysterious wrong deed to you in a hotel or something? Oh wait, no, because I'd have only been 19 then and hadn't even found out about furry, and you'd certainly would have still be a creepy older guy to me even then. I don't need the opinions of others, (and it's not like I'm that connected with either in the things they do, Gallacci not at all, hardly even know the guy save for the times I've seen him at a con behind a table) to know you're full of it. Self inflated ego that's found a place where he can mysteriously feel needed, or belong while all the while you're probably laughing it up because the very people that are made fun of on a regular here, YOU'RE like the father of them all.

And I prove you wrong every time I post another picture somewhere because it shows my steady improvement and study as an ARTIST (especially the fact that between the two of use, only one can actually draw a real human being, or a real looking animal for that fact). The fact you even use the word artist associated with your name is an insult to me to anyone that has ever put paper to pencil. Only time you 'create' something is either to line your pockets with smut money or to attempt to make yourself feel better in lame attempts to tear someone else down.

Make THAT an article.

Anthropomorphics is an art form now? I thought it was just a subject matter for many different kinds of art forms. That's like saying drawing fruit baskets is an art form, no matter if you use oil paints, charcoal, or cow dung.

Considering not many mainstream comic artists can draw anthro characters as well as they do humans, I'd say yes, those how primarily draw anthros, regardless if it's in a toon form or realistic form are doing so in a specific art form or style. Like Manga is an artform that not just anyone can draw and have it look right or visually pleasing. Not everyone (as this site brings up constantly) can easily just draw anthros.

Look at how Beast in the X-Men comic looks when different artists draw him in his now, humaniod lion/cat form. Some do it well, some totally suck at it even if their humans look beautiful. (Best example I think is the artist that did the X-Men Phoenix Endsong comic, if any of you are comic fans. The humans it it were almost photorealistic, but you can tell he struggled when it came to drawing a less human looking Beast).

Ohhhhh, I tried to stay out of this. Honest I did. Really, really, honest, really I did. So I'm going to try to dodge the question of samurai monkeys and bondage barbie bambis. But I will ask this:

Wot happened, Jer, old pal?
In the articles on the site, you use english! English! With nouns, verbs, adjectives, and possibly a gerund or two all in proper order! But here... Here... I know. I know one day, you're going to post with spotless grammar and nary a smiley, and on that day, you're going to hear at least a dozen heads explode. Possibly mine. But the sound would be worth it.
I honestly am curious about why you post in such a matter, Jerry.

Back to the post, I have a pet peeve about considering manga/anime an artform, in that it tends to imply this sort of dreck is all there is, because it's a single artform. Is this to say Ghibli and Clamp are interchangable? That someone who churns out perfect drawings for Dragonball Z has a chance at recreating the artistic essence found in Galaxy Express 999? Nay, I say. Nay.

By extension, I argue that 'Anthro' as an artstyle label is fraudulent as well. Do you hear of Bugs AntroBunny? The little AnthroEngine that could? Transformers, AnthroRobots in Disguise? Let it stand on its own: if it is good, then no euphemism is needed; otherwise, no word will ever save it.

If by some error, I have ended up having this be a personal attack instead of simply a baseless rant, I apologize. But I must state this:

There are many comic book artists that are good at one thing but not others, and this requires not a separate artstyle division. I will take you at your word that the X-men artists focus mainly on drawing human beings, not felines. But I protest in saying that putting a cat head on a human body requires its own artstyle category.

Otherwise, if one draws the female figure poorly, using a wide chest and thin hips, are they well versed in the man artstyle, but not the woman artstyle? Perhaps they have flowing whips, but they have not researched their handgun artstyle enough. And let us not discuss the Fantastic Four, for the attention to the skin-condition artstyle is beyond the scope here. Could it be that Rob Liefield is simply bad at the non-pocket-laden-person artstyle?

Fake edit: Way too long, admits knowledge of anime AND US comic books. I think I've used up all my cool points today, folks.

Manga is a Japanese word for a comic book (like the Korean is manhwa). So, the X-Men issue drawn by Rob Liefeld Superstar is still called X-Men manga in Japan. Gonterman would be called mangaka in Japan. Hell, even you. But (omg!) we're not in Japan.

Outside Japan, it is any comic drawn by a Japanese (and I mean any). And no, this Usagi Yojimbo guy you seems to love so much is an American (of a Japanese descent, but born and raised in US).

Also, "Anime" section at deviantArt has as stupid name as "Anthro" (as it means simply "human"). You just can't pass non-animated pictures by the non-Japanese as an animation by the Japanese... or can you? (dun dun dun!)

That seems to be a trend in recent anime. Even when two characters have a sisterly relationship the fans start twisting it with their dirty, dirty minds. Gay pairings are strangely popular. I guess they're catering to their audience.

Er, it's because of the self-insertion effect it has on women actually, just as much as it's attractive to gays. Most slash fiction writers and die-hard fans are females.

This has actually been a part of Anime and Manga for many years, and not all of it is down to fan wishful thinking either.

Sailormoon had a relationship between two of the female characters, while Card Captor Sakura has a romantic relationship betwen two male characters.

As has been said, this is most prolific amongst writers writing for a female audience.

Of course I suppose I could have just summed it all up by saying "Japan".

Yaoi is written and drawn by women for women. It's full of girly guys kissing and romance and feathers and roses and shit.

The true homosexual stuff is called gay manga, and it's pretty hardcore.

Sailormoon had a relationship between two of the female characters

They were guys, actually. They tried to make Gonterman gay.

Really? I do remember two of the Sailor Scouts actually having a relationship too. Don't ask me which ones, it's been a long time since I've even seen it.

Kunzite and Zoicite were also in a gay relationship, but in the American release they *apparently* repainted Zoicite to be a girl.

Gawd, I'm an anime nerd :(

Neptune and Uranus were the two

They were reported as 'cousins' in the american version, but they are lesbians in Japan

Fish Eye was a guy in the original but made into a girl for the US version (as I already pointed out to Skunkfucker who was sorely disappointed). Hawks Eye still remained his normal flamboyant male self.

It's pretty easy to get into, if you like comics and also homosexual romance. Or, y'know, just Japanese drawn porn. Japan pumps it out in high quantity and quality.

My girlfriend and I are a bit sad in how we devour this stuff. It's sort of our dirty little secret.

Japan's silly adherence to censorship laws that are no longer even in effect prevent me from getting into any of their porn. Mosaic blurs and vague blobs in place of genitals kinda spoil it for me.

But this is just one girl's opinion from my experience of her

Dare not speak the name of the creature that is pink, for her sychophants may hear and come to derail the thread.
I used to think that Pink is batshit insane but by now I figured out that she just has less standards than a crack whore. She simply draws anything for anyone to get a 1up from them. Pinky does this more than anyone I seen and thus raked in a army of wierdo sychophants.
I call her is the Pink Panzer for all critique bounces off on her thick skull.

That's kind of sorta the impression I got of her

To Charisma, I am aware that some people consider her a great friend, and that's great. Sadly if you're not in her group of friends she tends to ignore you to the Nth degree, and as a result she appears snobby and aloof

As I said, this is only my experience of her

BTW thanks Paul :) Sorry for bringing it up

ah, well you're entitled to your opinion, but I know that although she'd love to make more friends if she could but she's immensly paranoid of how someone might hurt her next, for good reason as I've seen :/ I think its more of a case of being suspicious and scared than snobbish.

I'm not about to compare pink to other artists in how she deals with her personal demons, because that's for her and her alone to deal with. But in my personal experience, until she does something to change my mind I still regard her as a self absorbed member of the furry community, whatever her reasons may be

But who knows...were I to take a more active part in the furry community I might break through to the inner Pink...god that sounds wrong o_o My views shouldn't cloud the views of anyone else, and it's good that she has friends who have seen the real her and can vouch for her good nature.

Yeah. I did a batch a bit ago but Dave forgets to update the page and then I forget to do another set. Lazy all around woo!

As for Pink, I find that Pink tends to be incredibly human, thus prone to making the same mistakes and hypocricies that plague most mankind. Nothing really startling and dramatic in that. However it's something that many of her friends will completly ignore while her enemies will exxagerate, both of which just create this cyclone of drama. Personally I've only had friendly good times with Pink, but at the same time I have a few friends who have had very negative encounters so its rather moot.

Its a legal term I think. Tends to mean that the matter is more or less stuck in one place...usually without one side or the other being in advance. Kind of a stalemate but implies that if future evidence was to lean one way or another the opinion could shift.

Truth is, one can not possibly look into people's heads and see whats going on inside. Nobody needs to.
Even some serial killer have been discribed as friendly and incredibly polite by their peers. Not that awful artwork is even remotely comparable to murder in any way.
I judge Pink by her deeds. I am indifferent towards her motivation or personality as long as the artwork she puts out turns my stomach or worse.

No matter how nice she is or how much tea and crumpet you had with her.
It does not change the fact she churns out one eyesore after the other.

Most of her art content doesn't bother me, each to his/her own and all that (apart from the one of her as a human french kissing sonic while pantless...that I didn't need to see)

I can see it now upon my death my wikipedia article will be "She made some pandas, and a bunch of chibis of really creepy characters"

But I can fully understand that regardless of how nice a person is, drawing creepy stuff by no means excludes the fact that they draw creepy stuff. Dave Hopkins is a hilarious person to joke around with in real life, but by no means am I a fan of his rape series or gore-fests. I find Pink a great friend, but I've on more than one occasion told her some of her art makes me creeped out. I'm friends with a guy who does music that IMO sucks balls. But I figure thats life and if I was required to be a fan in order to be a friend its not really a friendship worth keeping. So really I can't argue the fact that people are going to find someones work overrated or crappy.

I am friends with a girl that draws hentai bondage porn of yaoi type girly men.
She makes stuff I deeply dispise but she is still my friend.
Part due to the fact that she does not upload any of it to the internet anymore and part due to the fact that we were good friends first.
A good friendship can handle such differences.
Guess a lot of people have friends like that.

I'm friends with someone that's going through a sex change at the moment because he believes he should have been born a lesbian (fair enough) and on top of that a furry dragon too, and by the early hours of the morning he scours the streets for horny male stray dogs that will hopefully have sex with him (no luck yet!)

I'll talk to him on msn as long as he just shuts up with the beastility crap. Otherwise it has nothing to do with me and he's just good company and a laugh.

Sometimes friendship can overlook the most powerful of stuff....although saying that I doubt I'd want to meet him in real life! (but who knows, Pink has done some things that I could be equally freaked out by, but forget it all in an instant when we're having a laugh and drawing together IRL)

Even if I hunted through the backlogs of VCL Horrors and DA Horrors I wouldn't find it. The only reason I saw it was because it was in one of those communities and a huge hate war blew up from it with rabid pink fans yelling 'OMG U SUXXORS' (pink herself may have done some mudslinging too...I don't really remember)

It's probably in the depths of her DA gallery if it hasn't been removed. But I'm not crawling through her gallery to find it myself. One of the reasons i stopped watching her was so I didn't have to look at her creepy fetishes.

The comments on that DA image explain SO MUCH:

I love Sonic, and I feel special in some ways that I have something with him noone else has... something special and pure.

I dont have any real life friends at all. Anyone I ever talk to are either friends of Lore or foxy.

I dont work because I cant work, I have been on incapacity benefits for my mental problems since I was younger, and i dont have any friends in real life I can talk to.

I cant leave my house alone, or be alone, or work... so pretty much anything like that is out of the question. :/

Basically I live in the woods, and nowhere near a city/town the closest one is miles away on a train (2 hours on a train). I dont know anyone in real life who lives close, all my old friends live in London (400 miles away)
I am too poor to travel anywhere anyway.

I also have trust issues and couldnt just invite anyone to my house unless I know them.

That's all very sad for her indeed

but I have a friend with severe cerebal paulsy who lives her life in a huge wheelchair. She can't speak, walk or do anything by herself. She needs constant care 24/7. Since she was born doctors told her parents she should be allowed to die as it would be the 'kindest' thing to do. She's be shuffled from dire care homes and crappy schools because people didn't want to try to communicate with her. She's now in her late twenties

And yet she wrote this for her mother, along with many other beautiful poems and lyrics that have been made into songs

'Every person has to be dead who does not believe in someone
I believe in you
I want everyone to be happy
Like you're happy with me
I want everyone to be beautiful
Like you're beautiful to me
I want everyone to be themselves
Like you are to me'

(bear in mind she wrote this with a head pointer and a letter board...it's not the whole song but I won't bore you)

You can throw thew sympathy vote at me to account for behaviour, but I know people who have worked their asses off to prove that they are worth something against huge odds. Instead of crawling into a hole and complaining about how much their life sucks, they fight to get themselves heard and to make changes. My friend is one of those people, and I admire her more than anyone else in the whole damn world.

Hell I might sound insensative, but Pink has hundreds of fans and online friends (like Charisma for example) who love her and/or her art, and still she complains about how terribly tragic her life is. She needs to open her eyes a bit more IMHO

Eep. And I thought some of the people I hang out with online are odd. Props to you for putting up with that guy; I know I'd be creeped out to no end. Let's see the people who think we're SA-reject furry hating jerks put THAT in their pipes and smoke it.

by the way Octan, where did you get your icon? I've been seeing that character around the web and wondered where he came from.

This section is for Pink. Why have I given Pink a section all for herself? Because I no longer draw any artwork of Pink and I am no longer excepting fanart of her. I wanted to give her this little section of her own just to remember the only good times I feel she had.
Pink is no longer to be drawn, but I am more than happy to allow people to keep any art of her they have done online, as a homage to a character who became so popular, so fast. RIP Pink

It's the Cheshire Cat's son from Shawn Keller's animation about babyfurs which had mixed reviews to say the least.

I hope the negative review did not make him leave the internet forever.

I doubt it. Odds are the ones giving the negative reviews are the ones whose opinions he cares about least.

Sides on the internet leaving forever is the equivalent of 2 weeks until you "decide you're not going to care about what your naysayers say and are staying for your friends"

For those who weren't here when he first posted the link here, here's what went down in a nutshell.

Shawn Keller: Hey guys! Check out my new animation which mocks the babyfurs.
Half of CYD: That was very cool, Shawn! Loved the Aliens refference.
Mitch: Actually that wasn't that great.
Other half of CYD: Yeah, that was kinda dumb. Why stoop to a Badgers parody?
Shawn Keller: *sniff* You don't like me anymore. I'm leaving this place!

I think one of the factors that makes the difference between the people who fight against the obstacles in lives and the people who let it drive them to depression and despair, is the presence of real living people and the emotional support they provide. A lonely person is a truly wretched creature, while those born with genetic problems, or who are direly ill, or horribly injured, thrive with some love and affection.

A strong will helps too.

EXACTLY

Not to mention Pink tends to vents mostly through art, which is quite a healthy idea in my opinion.

I tend to update my Livejournal with a monthly angst-fest instead :D

I don't accept that. There is a chance that everyone can be loved and appreciated in the world, but in some cases you have to work for it. Charisma has mentioned that Pink does meet some online people IRL. I'm not saying she should cling to those people. But her bitching and whining seems to me to be more for sympathy than an actually cry for help. And if it is a serious cry for help she needs to draw in some of the balls she shells out on the net and go get some help, because few people are going to do it for her

I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but I hate it when people get whiney over the net through art or blogs...fine draw angsty pictures of your characters slitting their wrists if it makes you feel better, but the instant you stick it in photoshop and then preach it on DA you're not a person with serious problems, you're an attention seeker

Of course this is all IMHCO

Don't get angsty, get fucking ANGRY

Unfortunately it quickly becomes a self feeding angst fest that actually makes things worse rather than helps. You're supposed to get it all out immeadetly and not churn it out for years and years. Big difference in venting and wallowing.

Why can't anyone go trough puberty drawing dead things and playing dark eldar in warhammer anymore instead of becoming freaky perverts. Boy, were those days embarassing in retrospect.

Fake Edit: Fuck, I take long in replying to anything.. started this before raygirl.

If Im seriously depressed I tend to stay off the net.

Or I get really pissed off and start yelling about things that get on my tits

I feel better after a nice long rant :) Getting angry works...in moderation :)

Haw haw, I think I keep some of my old files around just to try to keep me humble, and remind myself of how stupid I was as a teenager.

Pink said she can not be left alone and is under supervision.
This means she is surounded by real people ?
That she has internet means she is not locked away in a rubber cell.

Getting angry or drawing angst art maybe helps some people.
I personally like a good talk with a person I meet real and personal.
Nothing ever made me feel better than a simple discussion of what makes me feel bad.
I have given an ear to some people online and they said it had a similar effect for them.

she just has her boyfriend, who tends to ignore her most of the time, and she was locked up for a long while a few years ago, which wasn't nice, poor thing. :/ But of course not many people would know that since she doesn't use details of her past for a sympathy vote. Only when people ask, like in the comments to that Sonic picture does she explain. -I think thats honesty rather than craving sympathy.

I figured 'supervision' meant professionally, or a parent or something, which does not even remotely make up for a lack of friends or a close family. Changing your life that way isn't a matter of simply wanting to, or knowing you should, it's terrifying.

I know, because I went through that. I didn't need supervision ... actually, I probably did, but I managed... but I was a complete recluse for a long time, too afraid of people to go out and interact with them. My neurotic imagination had detailed all kinds of horrific scenarios that might take place in a social setting. But I did eventually yank myself out of it, and I now have a job with good people, in a crowded part of downtown, and so far, everyone I've met has really liked me.

Oh damn, now I remember. Wasn't there some drama over Supermegatopia messageboards about how Drake drew Pink as a gift with a guy. Pink threw a royal fit about how she never would be with a guy and Drake promised to never do a favor anymore or something. E-drama.

Funny how that sticks to your mind, went to those boards once and turned right back after this was the first thread. Of course it was all those years ago so I don't know about Pink of the today.

People do change ;)
I once had a friend that was completely obsessed with this one guy in high school, she was utterly devoted and apparently in love. I few years later she decided she was gay and has only had girlfriends since....Not even the slightest bit bisexual.

No, you see, it's ok, because Max jerks it to Sabrina.
It's a bizarre form of mutual masturbation.
