Otaku vs. furry.
And possibly vs. Trekkies.

Are there many differences? (Besides tastes.) Do they both have drama? Do they have the same ratio of sick fucks to sane people? And, besides the professional stuff, is the average art quality the same?

Each fandom has drama, asshattery, "celebrity" worship and sick fucks. Furry's problems are just more pronounced and unique. And by "unique" I mean fucked up.

I never knew I could be considered more geeky than a man getting married in a Klingon costume.

Or erotic fanfic writers, for that matter. Fuck. I'm doomed.

IMHO, I think furries are below trekkies. I say that simply because most admirers of the series are somewhat intelligent thinkers themselves (just ask a trekkie about the real life problems and some solutions to actually implementing warp drive. You'll get some really good references to the theory of relativity and so forth) while most furries are just concerned with fapping to the latest FCHAN thread and debating the ethics of a recently released film (I won't mention it again) that doesn't even matter because it used CG wolves.

The furry equivalent of a reasoned scientific debate is over when science will advance to the point where they can have themselves surgically become furries. Some of them will swear its possible now and they are going to have it done.

I think one night on IRC one of them broke down into that night's drama queen , in between emote sobs and cries to god he talked about having his brain hooked up to a computer and just exist as the brain on the internet.

I don't know. To me, furry isn't so much a fandom as it is a subculture.
While Trekkies center in on one thing, Star Wars, furry doesn't have a central movie/tv show/character, but rather, an idea.
I have no clue what I'm talking about.

EDIT:
STAR TREK good lord what is wrong with me.

Furry is built around great ideals rather than one single movie! =)

A vision of better world where all live as equals...
Tentacly cubhermtaurs and dicknipply scatunbirthervorehorses!

Otaku vs. The world.

Now first off, I'm considering the word Otaku as to mean "Hopeless Anime Fan", and not just "Anime Fan".

Now, I've run into many Otaku. I've seen Many Otaku, and I can say with certainty that only Furries trump Otaku in the Drama, and Freakiness department.

I know the common Anime Fan, like myself, don't stoop to such levels, but I have seen guys in sailor fuku, crossdressing, and big sumo guys as Sailor Moon. While most of it is just the Fandom poking fun at itself (a healthy trait I believe), I have not seen Furry doing the same, since when one does, they get hit with the Fursecution hammer and get burned at the stake for heresy, then one fo the Fur-quaida strap a bomb to themselves and derka-derka on the ashes. Then those watching fap off to the whole spectacle.

I haven't known Trekkies to be warped, but a few of them scare me.

So on the spectrum of weird, I actually place it from least to most weird...

Trekker, Anime Fan, Trekkie, Otaku, Furry.

I've seen an otaku yesterday. He has loads of a figurines and stuff, anime stickers on his computer. Okay. He had posters everywhere on the walls, like wallpaper. It happens, right?

But, he also had posters on all of his ceiling.

AND HE EVEN HAD POSTERS ON SOME OF A FUCKING FLOOR

But he's cleaning all this stuff and bathes regularly, you know. Also, he's very thin. And he doesn't have any sex with his cat, at least any I know about.

Yeah, pretty much.

But in Japan otaku isn't just an anime fag, it's any crazy nerd of anything (furry otaku for example, if there's any).

Not really.

I know a number of anime fans and they are mostly okay. Unlike furries they seem to have a better grasp on the silliness of fandom. They don't seem to consider their hobby a social movement, or believe that they actually are large headed japanese school girl deep down underneath.

Also, unllike the rank fetid odour of furry, most of the otaku I know are pretty anal-retentive (as opposed to anally-fixated) and socially functional.

Still, the willingness of most male anime fans to dress up like their favorite female characters astounds and disturbs me.

As far as I can tell, the word 'otaku' has the same purpose in Japanese than the word 'fanboy' in English. It's used to describe somebody so obsessed with something in particular -comics, movies, pornography, Internet, etc- that his whole life turns around that obsession.

I'll admit to liking anime more than a little, but as far as taking that hobby seriously?

Well, all you gotta do is take a look at what me and my friends do at anime cons and my point is made clear:

For every digusting, filthy, annoying anime fanboy I've seen (in real life; going to an anime convention is sort of asking for trouble), I can count a hand of worse furries.

I've also never been invited to an "otaku" orgy, however, upon a couple of local furries discovering my liking of anthropomorphic animal drawings, well...

True. Most otaku will not automatically assume that just because you kind of like anime you're going to want to sit down and watch something like La Blue Girl with them. Furries don't have that kind of social awareness.

My ex went to a LAN party where there was some dude in fox ears and a tail making a big deal about his furriness. So my ex walks up to him and says "Hey, my ex girlfriend is a furry". The furry kid goes insane and starts ranting and raving about how rare furry girls are, asks if I'm hot, and follows my poor ex around for the whole party. When he got home, he called me to tell me that he felt my pain. To his credit, the ex didn't give out my screen name to that crazy furry dude. It's diffacult as Hell to leave the fandom cleanly when I'm constantly being bombarded by douchebags like the fox kid, and I'm VERY grateful that I didn't end up with a follower.

Maybe we aren't compering like for like here. Actually, I think on the annoyance scale I think console fanboys are far more irrataing then furries. Not as weird, but defiantly just as fanatically retarded and impervious to logic. In fact, remove the sexual deviance it's hard to tell the two apart.

Haha, that's scary. To be honest, I really feel kind of bad for some furries who don't have any social skills. Then I tell myself only girls have feelings and I'm being a wuss.

I've never known a furry in real life, I'm happy to report, but I have known more than a few self-proclaimed Otaku. Now, assuming the two group's general geeked-out annoyance factor is equal, adding perverse sexual creeppiness means on a Yuck scale Furry > Anime

Furry - Anime
Herms - Dickgirls
Cubart - Lolicon/Shotacon
Extreme(?) - Guro

But the biggest differance I've found is that when you compare postcounts of m/m and m/f image boards. Furry boards have 2 to 3 m/m posts for ever m/f post. Anime image boards are the exact opposite AND there's non sexual content. From this we can conclude that furries are sex crazed homosexuals. :P

Guys, don't forget that:
1. Anime fandom is very large;

and
2. Japan is pretty populous country, and manga there is just everywhere.

Furry for the other hand is a pretty small clique, but with lots and lots of a crazy fetishes and outright deviations.

And this, boys and girls, is why I've moved myself to the edges of the furry fandom. Well, one of the big reasons.

This quote should be pressed into steel for all the world to see. I've noticed this for so long, that straight furs enter a female devoid fandom and stalk the few girls in it to the point of driving them out. We queers need those girls to talk to and buy shoes with, you jerks!

I don't think there are more furry transsexuals/transgenders/pick-a-PC-terms than nonfurry ones. They just seem to be louder about it. And more sensitive, and more defensive, too. Much like furry pornsters, or furry gun nuts, or furry Christians, or, y'know, furries in general.

So this means that furry's raw population versus brain killing power quotient is way higher than anime. Furry is more dangerous than anime.

Though allowing your kids to be involved with either should be grounds for retroactive sterilization when they invent time travel.
