Snopes (a site that reports about rumours on the internets) sez it might be true that a mouse thrown into a fire by an irate homeowner escaped and caught the house aflame.

Wouldn't you know it? A couple of misanthropic furries pop out of the woodwork.

Which would YOU prefer? A quick death from having your skull crushed or being slowly burned to death?

A question for the ages, I daresay.

I owned pet mice (they last only about 2 years). They're surprisingly amicable and smart for their size. Even if they do breed like crazy and infest homes that aren't as clean as they should be, they're no different from larger mammals.

That being said, if this doesn't turn out to be insurance fraud (it smacks of it as much as anything can smack) the old bastard just got kicked in the sack by karma. Fire's no way to go and I think he's old enough to know that by now.

I love livejournal responses. "Expressing anger over an animal's horrible death?? GO BACK TO THE COMMUNE HIPPY PINKO COMMIE LEFTY. WHY DO YOU HATE AMERICA SO MUCH"

I thought Snopes later verified that the mouse was in fact dead before it was thrown in the fire and the fire was actually caused by the dryness of the area and strong winds...but the mouse thing sounding much more exciting and interesting caught on?

I hope nobody tells them about all the lab mice we've tortured and killed.

Hoo, boy.

They don't know what actually happened yet.

Perhaps the original version was true but Mr. Mares, after being heavily criticized for throwing a living creature into a fire, chose to alter his story and claim the mouse was dead (thus making his initial story impossible), then decided the attention brought by the first version outweighed the criticism and switched back again. Or perhaps the first version was an invented one, and after being ridiculed over it Mr. Mares opted to tell the truth, then reverted to his fictional story because he liked the attention.

Either way, we look forward to the next installment of the saga.

I'm pretty certain now that none of this with the mouse ever happened. It's just too wild.

Sounds like "oh snap! I'm getting fame! Lets milk it!" to me. Not that it matters if he did or not, in a year from now I'll likely still be getting emails going "Lolz! Dumb guy lose house to mouse!!11" along with my yearly "We must stop BonzaiKitten! :(:(:(" forward.

I found no evidence that allilicious was a furry. Maybe a PETA misanthrope, perhaps?

I have to say, I fell for the bonzai kitten thing five years ago. (hey I was a kid! :D) and I'm probably one of the people you got the forward sent from if I remember rightly

What I want to know is why that one kept making a "narf" sound.

PETA members rank on the same level as furry scum. :>

Actually, I don't know about mice, but rats make excellent tools during arsons. If douzses in gasoline, they'll scamper along and leave a trail behind themselves because they are so low to the ground and often drag their tails. If you put them in a wall, they will inherently travel deep within, a perfect spot for a sustained fire to start.

Not that I know first hand, of course, and I love rats... just a useful tidbit to know.

I know you think lowly of the general furry populace, but that's rather harsh on them.

PETA members are philosophically misguided. Furry scum are just plain warped. The former implies conscious responsible will. The latter implies mental incapacitation. Either this puts furry closer to a willful offense or PETA closer to mental abberration.

No, this isn't working for me.

No one ever explained why disliking a man for trying to burn a living thing to death meant misanthropy. I thought misanthropy was when you hated other people for no good reason, not when you had a healthy sense of justice.

As for PETA, whip that whipping boy, internet.

Disliking a man isn't hijacking a thread in a forum (or I suppose LJ) to break out your little soapbox over a truism or bullshit nobody gives a bloody tampon about. Whining and being a internet crusader has little to do with justice or actual animal rights.

Misanthropy is a feeling that humans as a species or society are inherently wicked or undeserving of the world. It's like doubleplus pessimism.

Fake edit: I'm a bit off...
