Not furry related per say but it does provide interesting insight about 'lookism'. I think it helps a lot to explain why so many furries choose animals generally considered to be good looking for their avatars.
But it also provides interesting insight into why good looking people tend to get a lot more attention, often right from the very early days of their lives. |

I skimmed over the article, and yeah I think there is probably something to it, the only thing is , while you can choose an avatar or whatever you cant choose how you look (obviously)
At the same time though, I dont think that it is that much a conscious decision on the part of the furries in question. Mainly just because of how subjective the whole thing is. Its probably more subconscious. I would imagine someone might notice that people with a particular type of avatar get more attention, or if they have several they get different treatment using one rather than the other. So maybe in a way they are 'trained' to use one avatar rather than another.
I think its why you see a lot 'sameness' all over the place. What initially caused it is probably some sort of trend from the past thats echoed in the fandom today.
I've never really MUCKed or anything so i cant say for sure...is furry MUCK tons of foxes and wolves as people say? |

What? Some folks try to go for the 'norm', where the 'norm' is an overly buff wolf/fox. The rest generally think that this is what they might become, if not the overweight buttertroll which they are.
Sadly, even more than that is the recent innundation of the "I'm Different!" crowd who profess to be something entirely off the wall, for that entire purpose of not conforming, not even to FURRY stereotypes... They're usually the 12 year olds who play bishounen X, where X is a lizard, weasel, naked mole rat, or penis wart - purely to peeve the elders off and to show how HARDCORE they are.
Fuck it. Drop a bomb on the lot. Let radiation decide who wins. |

We learnt all the statistics last year in psycology about how attractive people genrally get away with crime more in court as the jury is more likely to become sympathetic, so that's kind of relevant too.
I chose a cat as my avatar because I've always been a cat lover. I think someone's choice of animal stems from the animals stereotype mosty. Like a Vixen is suposed to be sexy and a rabbit is horny and a wolf is masculine. |

It's interesting how a lot of the stereotypes only exist because of cartoons (well, apart from the rabbit one). Most of the foxes around here are scraggly little things. I'd make the rat comparison, but rats are actually fairly clean. As for skunks, well...
As for cats, do you act like an evil, scheming, violent manipulative psychopath who only gets away with it 'cause you can purr and delights in inflicting pain and attacking anything that moves? There's a reason why Blofeld didn't have a dog. There's also a reason why he only had one eye. |
