Whoa Boy, probably like to be about as napalm here.
Anyway, I lurk in lots of places and read lots of things.
Anyway, Ah' ain't against adult art, in moderation, Ah' ain't against Pinups, Mucha, in Moderation, or animae, or cartoon, or realism.
But, massively innocent look, I was listening to "Someone's" comments in, ahem, another forum.
Something about the sexual nature of art, wherein the primary difference between adult art and regular art was the character depicted had a loin cloth.
Dude! Comrade!
I have so privately nurtured the view that "G" rated Furry art amounted to the character portrayed was a' wearin' a "G" string. I peronsally have even been told by a "Noted Furry Artist" that she was not interested in slice of life work. That is not a joke.
It is like, Le' Sigh, and, yes, I know things are a trifle bit broader than that, but, when you look at furbid, durned little.
Again, not knocking pin-ups, but, where is the art with context and background? How does the portrayed character really fit? What is he/she doing? Is he/she expressed in terms of a "person", doing meaningful things in their terms?
Does the artist bring me a consolidated, uniform image of a person going about their life in a way that touches me, the customer? Or am i looking at an image aimed at my wallet by way of my crotch.
Sulaco, I think you can probably understand what I am trying to say.
As for "Quality", and remember Ole Sparky lurks in the most surprising places.
I expect quality from commerical concerns who want my dollar. I expect stories, artwork, respect for the customer.
Sadly lacking in Furry.
I look at "El Cazador", "Sojourner", "Red Star", "Elfquest", "Twilight X", "Far West" and then I look at what Furry offers me, usually after tantrums and insults and insistance that "ears and a tail" are the high points of art. Followed by insults.
Again, I am not against pin ups, but...
"is that all there is my friends, is that all there is."
And I have lots of dreams, not about my "character" in the style of a certain ringtail, but the characters in my stories, interacting, in the context of their backgrounds.
One of the reasons I find myself increasingly furture alienated from the Fandom.
Not because I "Hate Furries" though that is an excuse apologists are too willing to use, but my interests in anthro art and stories and my viewpoints keep drifting further from Furry.

Howdies Sparky, I too lament the pin ups :-) Surely you have seen Yerf though? It seems to have quite high standards and good art. |

Though while they're all Anthropomorphic, none of them are Furry. |

Though while they're all Anthropomorphic, none of them are Furry.
And don't forget Usagi Yojimbo or Maus. Definately not furry either, even if that dipshit Xydexx Squeakpony may say they are.
It is interesting to note that all of these do not qualify as "furry" comics, and they don't need furry fandom in order to get readers. IMO, I think staying far from being labeled "furry" is a plus in their favor. Gee, I wonder why?
It's something I have always been hoping for; a way to enjoy anthropomorphics without having to cater to the freaks, rageaholics, and droolmonsters of AFF.
I only hope that as new works come, furry fandom will become even more and more marginalized as it gets left in the ditch. |
