Just a little while ago tonight, I dug out several years' worth of my furry/toony drawings and photocopies from my closet that I've become dissatisfied with (or embarrassed to have drawn, to be more accurate). I sat down and tore them all into pieces, all the while listening to an MP3 of Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" (it truly is Music To Destroy Stuff By), and bundled the shreds into a Wal-Mart shopping bag for disposal.

I feel cleansed.

That is all. You may resume your regularly scheduled lives, pass Go, and collect $200.

I did that quite a while back. If I recall, I used one of the last tracks to the Braveheart soundtrack... casting the ripped shreds into the trash as the piece built to the crecendo where Wallace screams "FREEEEEDDOOOOMMMM!!!"

If nothing else, cleaning out old sketchbooks is a good way to clear up some mental, as well as physical clutter.

I also did that when I completed my master's degree. As soon as it was in-hand and nothing could be done, I took all of my maps from my thesis, went to a state park, stuffed them in a fire pit, and watched them burn to Imana Mushif from Children of Dune.

I know that I went through TWO paper shredders disposing of nearly all of the master sheets from Furplay. The catharsis was quite a feeling. The first time I felt good about saying good-bye to something.

It doesn't necessarily have to be something bad to make you feel good, either. People tend to weigh themselves down by clinging to things they've long since lost interest in, simply because they hate to separate themselves with something that used to be of value to them. (Check out "Clean Sweep" on.. uh.. it's either TLC or HGTV. If you think you're a pack-rat, it'll make you feel good about your clutter.)

Whatever it is, if it's something you're not really into anymore, it can feel good to cut yourself free to move on to other things.

Odd...I may be embarrassed by some things I've drawn, but I don't usually go ripping them to pieces. In fact, it took a personal disaster to clean out a lot of my old stuff...back in June last year, a water leak upstairs flooded my whole house, ruining the paper copies of a lot of my older artwork. (By some twisted irony, the erotic stuff survived.) Nowadays I draw a lot of my stuff digitally anyway...

But hey, if it makes you feel better, that's fine. After all, it has to feel good that you're putting a painful part of your past behind you.

I sort of assume that Hirtes was involved in a big way with this "Furplay" thing (I only became aware of the furry fandom in 1999), since he said "master sheets." But I dunno about the other two...heck, I dunno a lot about the folks who come here. We ought to have a thread were we tell a little about ourselves and why we came here...

Beats sitting around squeezing blackheads.

I dunno, I'd prefer to keep my ego down to a manageable size, thank you very much.
