I know a lot of game stores (if this is sort of place I am thinking of here) think they can charge a lot for this type for stuff, but if they want over $20 I would seriously smack the cashier.

I sure that somewhere out there, there is a warehouse filled with unsold, unopened NES inventory just rotting away

NES games are really cheap, The most they ever go for is 17.99. I know of two titles that are worth that much- Mega Man 4 and Final Fantasy. I got Clash for only 1.99. Inside the box I have no idea how much it is worth, but I know Gamestop would still only sell it for it's regular price. I'd be willing to do a really nice picture for it.

I'm a fairly casual collector as far as NES collecting goes. Most of the carts I have don't have a box. I mainly collect them to play them... because they're fun.
