If all these furries don't have jobs, how is it they can afford to go to so many conventions all accross the country? I've noticed a lot of them seem to show up for quite a few of them and was wondering how they can afford the time and money for it.

The spooge I can handle... that crack hag's face is just too much, though.

From what I've seen in discussions on mucks and such in my furrier days, some of them stretch their dollar by pooling resources. They carpool, share gas money, sleep 20 to a hotel room, etc. A lot of furries actually do have jobs, but its the kind of low-paying stuff that lets you get by with the bare minimum of work. They work at convenience stores, comic shops, mall shops like Sam Goody or Suncoast..... the kinds of places where it's possible to get away with sitting a lot and being surly to customers. (Not to say all employees of such places are lazy and surly.. many are friendly and hardworking.. there's some gals at an FYE here that are great. I'm just saying those are jobs where you CAN get away with being lazy and surly with the right boss, coworkers, and general conditions.) A lot of the computer-minded ones seem to work as helpstaff for companies or repair persons. A lot of them seem to have what could just barely be considered full-time work.. but they slip it all in under the radar.

These ones seem to be kind of a support systems for the ones that don't have jobs or parents to sponge off of. It doesn't seem atypical for several of them to go in together on renting an apartment or house and wind up in this kind of furry commune situation. You might have 5 or 6 of them living together (you fit that many into a small house by.. you know.. sharing beds and stuff..................... :? ) and, at any given time, at least 2 of them seem to be looking for work. This process of seeking employment can last a couple years under the right conditions.

The money for furry cons and furry merchandise often seems to come at the expense of things like food, water, electricity.... which bills are up-to-date enough to put off paying a month or two to afford that picture of Chester Ringtail? If they use this month's food budget to snag that Mark Parsons original, they could manage to live off of instant ramen and cans of tuna for the next couple of weeks. It's summer, so if the gas company shuts off their supply, they only lose the hot water heater.... cold showers are a small price to pay to be able to pick up that plushie of Donkey from Shrek with Zeta Creations' "thor" attached to it. I'm not saying this goes on all the time.. but I have seen conversations or threads in newsgroups involving such rationalizing.

And then you have the spongers. :) These folks are at home and may or may not be in school or may or may not have a job. I'm not sure how they manage to wrangle the funds for these things from their parents, but I'm sure there's many creative ways. My brother pulled this stunt a couple of times while he was in college. He told my grandparents that he wanted to travel with some friends to somewhere for a school vacation. They gave him the money, and later I find out in one case he went to a ConFurence, and in another case he went to Canada to finally meet a furry artist that he had been having an online relationship with. (I won't say which one... but I will say you'd probably be familiar with his work..... draws a lot of preteen-looking otters.)

Two things in those situations pissed me off. Obviously, him manipulating my grandparents' generous nature that way was unconscionable. Second, what if this artist he went to meet had been a complete psycho? What if he had gotten in a car accident? If something had happened to him where he couldn't contact us, we would have had no way of knowing he was in Canada or California instead of Colorado or Miami Beach. It was a good thing he was living almost a continent away from me at the time, or I would have given him a good ass-kicking.

The thing I really don't get moreso than the money is where the furries that do have jobs find the TIME off to go to all of these things? I would think after taking a few days off at a pop to go to 4 or 5 cons, their bosses would be pretty unhappy. But, then, maybe that explains the ones that seem to be perpetually looking for work.
