Post subject: Sexualisation of skunk anthromorph |
|
|
This issue was mentioned in the canine thread.
What is it with the sexualisation of skunks, or more specially, 'skunkettes'? Why is it that they are portaryed in the way they are and why is it they are so associated with promiscuous behavior?
Does it go back to PePe Le pew cartoons and he was always after well, affection (to put it polietly) and it seemed to be the only thing on his mind? Could it be because of those cartoons that skunks are associated with sex and sexuality, they did continue the trend with FiFi in Tiny Toons, which probably reminded people.
Other then that, I can't think of why skunks are portrayed in that fashion. Maybe it was something to do with their coloration? |

that could be, but it's more the chape of the body it's draw, also the eyes have something to do with it. the color black is also a very powerfull sexual color, think of those sexy outfits *shivers by the thought of it*
for fifi, fifi is the only tiny toon that's sexy drawed... her body is very femallike then the others...
Taht's my thought though  |

This is something I've wondered about as well. Hell, skunks are vicious, ugly bastards. To be honest, I often wonder how many furries have actually seen one.
Same goes for foxes. I see quite a lot of foxes - they seem to have taken a liking to the city. Doesn't stop 'em being nasty bastards, though. Okay, they're not as evil as raccoons or badgers (otherwise known as "50 pounds of hate in a 20 pound bag"), but still.
That said, maybe the whole "ugly, antisocial critters that fucking stink" thing is appropriate... |

Skunks and Furry go back a long way, predating Tiny Toons' Fifi La Fume by at least a decade.
I'm guessing the original idea (in the Vootie/Rowrbrazzle mindset) came from fan-art of Walt Kelly's Mamselle Hepzibah, and that drew the attention of someone to call members of the APA "Skunkfuckers". Now with skunks firmly set in the scen, people kept drawing them...
Somewhere around here I have some photocopies of early Rowrbrazzle flamage over the Skunkfucker tag (Taral Wayne, Joshua Quagmire, ...)
Historically, Skunks were the first 'fad' species in the FurryMUCK scene, before the "Yiffy Foxie" crap appeared. |

Oh, fennecs. Those things are like a litmus test for furries. In my entire life, I have not met a single person who knew what a fennec was who wasn't a furry. Everyone else just calls them "those little desert foxes with the big ears," when they call them anything at all.
Though, unless I'm mistaken, fennecs are actually a pretty recent furry fad animal, aren't they? |

Hrm, skunks. Seriously, I dunno. Aside from the Fifi reference, I honestly couldn't hazard a guess where the original fascination comes from (and while Mam'zelle Hepsibah always WAS drawn sexy, Pogo itself never really caught on with furries as a whole).
Then there's the point that, aside from actual Tiny Toon fan art, NO ONE in furry fandom draws skunks that look remotely like Fifi Le Fume.
Actually, I think a big part of the allure is the huge damn tail. With, notice the resemblance, "racing stripes". A skunk's natural coloration gives the impression of stylish clothing, to some extent. And most furry artists who draw skunks seem to focus on stylishness and coloration patterns, so maybe that's it. White on black, or vice-versa, has always been an exotic color combination in human society. |

i almost never have any type of sexual connotation to this stuff
so to me its surprising that people havent drawn portraits of cartoon skunks playing pool, or like with a 2-tone ska theme (this one especially, is what i always think of anyway)
come to think of it , there is a ska band "the Skunks"
i also tend to think of the checkered flags in racing, and like you had stated, calbeck, "racing stripes" |

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It isn't just the Warner stuff; there's something else that makes furries use skunks a lot and the fur color pattern may have a lot to do with it. |

"No matter how cute, it's still a skunk's ass."
I can't remember who posted that link or which forum it was in, but I think it's what Mouse is thinking of... |

Look at the general design of a skunkette.
"Take your basic female body, slap on an anthro head, and don't worry about screwing up the tail cause they're supposed to be huge anyway. Then pick a few bits to be white, mark off the stripes, and slather the rest with black marker."
Hard method to make mistakes on and you don't have to bother with, "What color shall I make it?" Plus, the general color scheme of white down the chest, stomach, and between the thighs draws all the attention _right_ where the smutartist wants it.
I would also have to agree with Chris Baird's reference to Hepzibah and the "Skunkfuckers" nickname. Someone please correct me on this, but I believe I read somewhere that it began at Confurence 3 with some person(s) wearing yellow t-shirts with said name printed on them.
Of course there is a possible psychological aspect to it that a few furs and I have discussed. As a _broad_general_rule_ furs are geeks, introverts, and outcasts. Now think about a female skunk in say, high school or college. Generalization would be that she'd have a distinctive (bad) scent. While she may be attractive and intelligent, she'd be an outcast as well. What a fantasy; to be some beautiful, lush-tailed females "knight-in-shining-armor." This goes more to explaining popularity than sexualization though.
That all being said, I'm a happy (and proud) skunkfucker.
