I think my brain just imploded upon reading this topic on DeviantArt's forum.

http://forum.deviantart.com/community/complaints/232136/

Yes apparently the word Furry is just as offensive as the word nigger...

Of course, "nigger" was derogatory from the start.. like Nip or Chink or Wop. "Furry," however, started out as something meaningless enough.. like Trekkie.... and evolved into a derogatory term by furry's own machinations.

Well, Deviant art just sucks...across the board.

It doesnt matter if they are furries or not. I get the distinct impression most people on that service are retarded.

Im not surprised someone got offended that thier stuff was called 'furry' and they compared that to a racist slur..

I could be hideously wrong, but I'm pretty sure "nigger" was one of the african tribal names that got co-opted as a racist term much later on.

Then again, that's just something I heard somewhere so it could be just a random myth as far as I know.

Could be one of those things no one really knows which story is true. I've heard it as a bastardization of "negro" and also "Niger/Nigeria." Anyway, my point was that furries have only themselves to blame for the stigma that "furry" has come to bear, whereas blacks did not bring upon themselves what the term "nigger" implies.

Does anyone remember when DeviantArt was one of the top places for application skins instead of a haven for the worst artists in Internet history short of, well, everything in the world of furry?

Back then, their network speeds were abysmal but skin works decent. Now their art is abysmal but speeds are much better. Like so much else, we can bring you more nothing, faster than ever before. Welcome to the future.

As to furry being an epithet, as stated that was by their own doings. But to compare it to racial slurs is beyond tweaked. People are born black. You may or may not be born gay. You are definitely not born furry. A new low in the run from responsibility.

a very good point.
I don't think he should care enough to post a thread about it, but I think he realised that as soon as he got replies! poor thing. lol

We used to call this kid "furry-head" in school, hehe.

ah, how I yearn for the days before I knew what a 'furry' even was.

Oh how I miss those days. I remember the exact moment my soul was stained by the furry community's touch. July of 99, when I gotten my first internet access through AOHell.

My little brother wanted me to look up stuff for Starfox on the SNES. I found a few fan sites, then I came accross one with a strange link on the bottom for the "Furry Ring". Being my nieve self, I clicked on it, and the rest is history.

Actually, I haven't found that many bad quality art there as much as I've found angsty, whiny, dark, PLEASEKILLMEILIKELINKINPARKDOWNWITHPARENTS crap. Maybe it's all in where you look....

But what I don't get, is isn't furry the term THEY use?! Or is this like nigger, where they can call each other that word, but no one else can?! WHat would they like us to call them? Fuzzy? Go back to callin' 'em Furverts? Or perhaps "They Who Like The Yiff"? Or perhaps The Cartoonkillers? Or the Hackwrench Hooligans? The Queens of the Internet Age? Babs Bunny's Bitches? The Constables, perhaps?

Ah hell, ahm callin' 'em Furry. Actually, the term "Furvert" is starting to sound appealing...

No, this is a case of a totally whack non-furry (or maybe ex-furry)

Or it could be some guy just trolling

WTF!?!

T3H Dramaz.

I've never seen something that makes me laugh so hard. Damnit just got a hernia, I'm suing this bottom feeder.

I don't beleive the sheer gall of someone equating a fandom faction (and a dysfunctional one at that) with an actual RACE.

Gollum Aye Aye, tell 'em whatcha think!

I agree, sir.

I often miss my pre-furry days... back when I could have seen a trailer for a movie like Two Brothers and NOT have my first thought be of all of the furries who will watch it and weep, thinking it a parable for their own lives... or the days when I could hear about a movie like Brother Bear and NOT think of all of the fat, hairy, gay furries that were going to use it as the spokes-movie for themselves.

Furry IS an offensive term, but more along the lines of "Otaku" or "Doodoo head." Not like the n-word at all.

At least the American bastardization of the word "Otaku" which is simply "American Anime Fan". The Japanese definition is a bit more harsh. As in "No-life except for (fandom in question)".

Here in the US, Otaku isn't an insult, it's almost a description of who you are.

As for furry...

I lack the proper words or time to properly define it. Except for the sheer number of meanings of the word I have come across. Everyhting from:

"Anthromorphic Artist"
"Anthromorphic Enthusiast"
"Something close to gay."

And that's just 3 of a multitude.

None of which have come close to the N-Word.

Which, at least in America is starting to lose it's meaning everywhere I've been, since the people who once were called such word now use it excessively in their vocabulary.

Here's an easy couple or so...

"Fucked in the head"
'Delusional"
"Pathologically socially inept"

Of course, these are almost a badge of honor for so many in furry these days.

I think the only time 'furry' is truly a derogitory term is when talking about the amount of hair on someone.
