I dunno if this is a furry thing or not, but here it goes.

I was standing on the overlook down onto the garden court at CONvergence 2004. I noticed something... odd.

There seems to be a trend for people to clip-on wolf tails and the like to their belts. Not everyone mind you, only a few. Since some of them I know were just doing some pimping for their Anime club. But there were others that had no excuse to cover the tail.

So, is it phurraie or that raver fur trend, or what?

There's far more furries than you'd ever suspect running loose and as the sickness spreads, it threatens to take goofy but otherwise harmless folks and turn them into goofy but not so harmless folks. Remember kids, if you see furry creeping about, make sure to encourage competence and maturity at all times in those it has infected in order to stave off the worst effects of it such as perennial unemployment, complete apathy towards one's future, and total victimhood mentality.

:!: ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FURRY FREAKERY FROM SPREADING! :!:

This MAY not be a furry thing. In some anime shows, some characters have worn fake tails (usually in the ones with the more bizarre fashion). The most well-known one was Tenchi Muyo, where one of the girls wore one on occasion. And, of course, there's the anime "neko" factor as well. If they were pimping an anime club, it could be more rooted in those reasons than furry.

But I've been seeing furries seep into some anime fan groups like a overflowing sludge, so who knows...

Some kid IM'ed me pics of himself and he had the same thing, a fox tail stickin' outta the back of his pants. He's trying to convince me to go to a con, and after I posted some of my art on some other forums he won't leave me alone.

I had to... um... respectfully decline the offer. :?

I can offer you all one better. After finding my screenname on one of the message boards I frequent, this guy IM's me saying hello, I'm SoAndSo, would you like to see my picture? Me being more curious than scared, I opened the webpage, and he was in a full fur suit, a la the mascots you can see at Universal or Disney.

Well then, at the very least, the verdict is out. I will keep my ears to the ground though.

I'm starting t feel like Roddy Piper's character in "They Live" or whatever, where when he puts on these sunglasses, he sees these weird aliens that look like zombies masquerading as real Humans.

Ever since I came here, I feel I just gt a pair of those glasses.

Yeah, I was thinking about that picture myself.

At least I know I am not going back to CONvergence for the reason that it's too... General. I need something more focussed. That, and less drunks wandering the common convention floor. >.<

I need a freaking year break after this one.

nothing personal, but god forbid a geek-con attracts geeks..thats my take on it anyway.

I don't know exactly what CONvergence is - but furries are, for better or worse, part of that landscape. And furries who attend a general convention like that have got to be at least a little more stable that some of the people you might find at a furry-only convention.

It would seem that one thing furries might have over other fandoms is the ability to drink other fandoms under the table (this statement is based entirely on hearsay and conjecture)

Well, I'm going to hop over to an Anime convention in the area. From what I heard it's not high in the "freaky" factor. And that's what I'm looking for.

One good thing CONvergence did though, is that they got rid of "the floor". Or at least told the people running it to go away.

Let's just say it involved alot of leather, latex, and... erm... stuff. They Hijacked the hotel every year, a random floor every year.

Good riddance I say.

But back to the subject at hand, it looks like Anime Detour will be sticking around, so I'll check those guys out after my little break.

"They Yiff"...hoo hoo...hah hah... I wonder who's going to be the first to enter the dealer's room of a furcon and say "I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubble gum."

My favorite furcon was ZonieCon because the atmosphere was much much better than ConFurence. I'm sorry ZonieCon eventually folded.

What did ZonieCon have going on?

Were there parties? What sort of panels were on tap?

And, I've finally posted my truncated, but adequate log of my CONvergence 2004 experience, with some pictures.

What did ZonieCon have going on?

ZonieCon was basically a "protest con" after the shenanigans at ConFurence 9. It was organized by the "Tucson Mob", first held in Casa Grande, Arizona, the following two events were held in Tucson. It was a relaxacon of usually around 50 people. What I liked about ZCon was that it had the machine gun shoot, rocket launches, storm drain paintings, and a barbeque of epic proportions. Also, it was a guy convention (yes, I spelled it correctly..."guy"). No spooge on the elevator walls, no "otter pool", no drama, no intrigue, no stress, no one coming up to my table demanding I draw some gay furry spooge art in their sketchbook or they're going to have me thrown out of the convention. I always had a good time at ZonieCon.

I don't know about parties as I usually kept to myself. I'd have to locate the ZCon program books to list the panels, although my workshop on inking was one of the panels.

I remember CONvergence from 1999. After what happened to me there, my take is "Not even if it'd help the space program, find a cure for cancer, and resurrect Elvis." Yes, it's a LONG story.

Plus it happened six years ago.

As I said, it's a LONG story, involving other factors, but I'll stick with my beef towards the convention.

A friend greased the skids for me to attend the convention as a guest. Not only would I be a guest, I had choice of panels to participate in, a table in the dealer's room, and possibly MCing the masquerade. Impressive perks.

When I arrived at the hotel, the reality check/cluehammer descended upon me with a crisp ring. "Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!"

At registration there wasn't a badge for me, the person at the table gave me a temporary badge so I could track down the liaison who arranged all these perks with me.

I didn't locate the liaison, but the person organizing the panels was certainly happy to see me.

As for MCing the masquerade, the person in charge was unaware of that, plus they already had someone else to MC the event.

As for a table in the dealer's room, the person in charge was unaware of that.

So, here I was, stuck until Monday, and it was just Saturday in Minnesota. Since I had an assignment to ink, I found a table and went to work.

The friend who greased the skids arrived and was disappointed to hear of my plight. Suddenly, the liaison arrived and gave me copper-plated hell for having my artwork out. As for my concerns about no badge, not MCing the masquerade, and no table in the dealer's room, it didn't matter to her, but I was EXPECTED to be at the panels. That's when I surendered the badge, which she grabbed and then ran off.

The friend was almost in tears because of that, plus other factors (that doesn't have to do with the convention). It was a shame I had to wait 48 hours before I could board a plane for home.

That's the abridged story.

Hrm, sounds like most of the BS events that happened at '99.

Let me put it this way, untill the great purge of 2001, there were some pretty stupid mistakes created by the nazis running the con. The main troublemakers seem to have been flushed out. 2004 was a far cry from the early crap of 99, 00, and 01.

Something tells me everyone's wires were crossed, and instead of finding out what's going on, instead they attacked the person they were supposed to help.

Standard BS. Sucks that it happened, but there's nothing anyone can do about it now. >_<

Very true. Thank you for confirming that was the norm for CV '99. Usually when I tell one of these horror stories, I get slammed for bitching/whining/kvetching because I had the audacity to not sing hosannas after taking a buggering. Part of the reasons why I am.....

I just think most of the guff you got back was from people who were... ahem... zealots for CVG. You see, CONvergence was spawned from a similar screw-job the current administration of MINICON did. By pretty much kicking out EVERYONE but the hard-science literary types. MINICON almost died, untill some new blood got in it and decided to return-it to the original form.

I can only imagine the reason why CONvergence decided to soften up and improve it's communication with it's constituents because MINICON is now a threat to their bread and butter.

Quite honestly, both of those cons now are too general to me. I require more focus.

I attend Dragon*Con as they're the ONLY convention where I don't have to undergo the tortures of Prometheus, perform the labors of Hercules, wait months for them to get back to me, or get snubbed because I'm not a big enough "name". Also, it's just 90 miles away. At least I've found one place where I'm not.....

I dunno about that...Jerry Collins said one time: 'Dragon*Con, emphasis on the CON'

An expression that would probably translate well to almost all conventions

I didn't say Dragon*Con was perfect. However, when I've had a problem with either the artists alley, registration, or my bio, the staff resolved the problem. Also, they invite me (fourth consecutive year) WITHOUT asking me to "prove myself". So, I don't see the "con" in Dragon*Con. Now I can name a couple to few furry conventions where I've felt like.....

I just wonder how many more lame puns they can come of for with titles using the word "Con."

FURther CONfusion gets double demerits for both a lame "con" pun and a lame "fur" pun.

Hmmm.. although... I wonder if there's a market for FursecuCon.... where anti-furries come together and socialize and burn effigies of Sabrina Skunk.

Heh...could you imagine the guest list and who'd be GoH? If there was such a convention, hopefully they'll remember me and not treat me like.....

Then we'd get the reverse of an SA invasion, where 300 to 400 pound zealots invade the convention and try to shut it down. Because we're being "racist" and "raeping tehr soulz".

>_<

You know, it sorta sucks bing a fur that's not a fur... it's sorta like a bad case of zen. I do like the idea of the FURsecuCON.

Heh...I could imagine the programming for the panels. "How To Deal With Furries." "Is (name of female furry character here) a hottie?" "Roundtable discussion: Addlesee, Collins, Hirtes, and others." This could be the ultimate "protest con" and I wouldn't be.....

Actually, I'm doing one. "Carc & 'Slide". Action, comedy, drama, intrigue, and no spooge or homosexuality.

Yeah, ZonieCon was cool, even if it did have it's share of problems (the two-legged variety).

There was that hermaphrodite who threw a temper-tantrum because he couldn't understand simple directions to a 7-Eleven.

Then there was "Captain Kung-Fu" who would just talk in a monotone... and talk... and talk... and talk... and talk... and talk... and talk... and talk... and talk... and talk...

And of course, who can forget that complete and utter RETARD who insisted we fulfill his rediculous, sophmoric fantasy of watching "The Lion King" with audience participation?! Talk about a waste of otherwise useful stem cells!

Chee....I found that 7/11. Of course, halfway to the store, Beiro and Bitton gave me a ride.

I had my encounter with him, which is a LONG story. Then recently, a fellow artist mailed me some of my original artwork from "Fawn" that "Captain Kung-Fu" actually stole from the SFA table during a recent convention. He returned the artwork in a sudden fit of conscience.

Is he the same yobo who drew a unibrow on himself to emulate George Clontz? If so, I remember him coming to my table, getting bent about something I had or didn't have, and giving me bad looks for the remainder of the event.

S'funny, I don't remember doin-... I mean, YEAH! YEAH! Wasn't he just KING of the DORKS? God, the chances of HIM ever scoring are pretty much NIL! What was that jerk-off's name, again? Garbled Genitals, or something stupid like that?

I don't know. I was recovering from "Captain Kung-Fu" repeatedly proclaiming his love for his sensei while I was whomping up that illustration of said sensei as a cyborg.
