Hi,
I've been wrestling with a big issue: Just because I like some anthro pictures, does that make me a furry? I've never attended a con, and have no intention of doing so. I don't wear a fursuit, I don't wage a "N3v4r-3nding campaign against t3h Filthy Hy00manz". But are all my "not-a-furry" points negated because I like the occasional anthro pic?

Your opinions please,
Thank you

Now if you'd asked a furry, they'd have replied that yes, you're one of them, but I say not.

Okay, well, it depends on what kind of "pictures"...

Have you ever watched an episode of Star Trek?

Does that make you a Trekkie if you did? No.

Don't let anyone tell you that just because you liked watching Sonic X or read Furrlough that you ARE a furry, and therefore you MUST conform to the will of furry fandumb & like what they like/hate what they hate (especially hate what they hate, or else).

Don't let them tell you that you are now a part of their sick sad world just because you like looking at anthropomorphic material and definately don't let them try to pull that "Once a furry, always a furry." crap on you. It's bullshit designed to suck you in and never let go. This is why furrydumb is looking more and more like some sort of religious cult.

I just wish they'd hurry up and get to the part where they guzzle the Kool Aid or set their own compound on fire.

You're right, I never thought about it that way. Thanks.
That takes a load off my mind.

Nice touch with the Rev. Jim Jones reference. XD

doesnt really matter

There are people out there who draw the stuff AND go to cons, and are 'not furries' or, there are people who have nothing to do with furry fandom at all but have friends in it so they once ina while go to cons or meets or whatnot

similiarly there are furries who dont have much to do with fandom at all (people who don't seem to think of the groups of people they hang out with in any larger context than just that)

I look at a fair amount of material coming from furry fandom, there a few people that I talk to , but other than that I dont have much time and have other shit to do ...I don't really consider myself 'a furry' but then again - I dont even seriously consider the question to begin with. It doesn't mean anything.

I find it incredible that quite a few furries would say to you, why yes you are a furry. They are so dense like that, some of them anyway.

YOU know you aren't a furry but i can't count the number of times furries have said "if you like anthropomorphic animals, you are a furry". It is surprisingly like a cult, as hirtes says, only way less organized and unfocused. They are a friendly sort, but talk about delusional. They are so intent on gathering more members and to legitimize/validate themselves, so basically in their minds anything goes to make you a furry. By their logic, all children who like disney cartoons would be furries, which means all children on earth are furries.

I've also not seen a fandom/group so intent on recruitment. They don't do it on purpose or even aware of it but their membership seems to actively "recruit" in an odd sort of way. They go out of their way to convince you that you are a furry or you belong there and they are so friendly and stuff... not that there really is anything inherently wrong with the furry fandom, but gee whiz they try to pull you in like they need more human batteries for their matrix.

i'd say that in order for you to be furry you really have to like anthro animals rather specifically. Being an extremely casual fan of anything is no grounds for making you one of the group.

the only other problem is if you have lots of geeky-type friends, like net junkies or comics and SF folks, and they catch you with furry art, they might ridicule you and label you a furry and make your life a living hell - that's why so many people who leave furry hate the fandom, ya know? You just wanna read an issue of sonic and suddenly all your friends think you fuck dogs.

Just don't let us catch you picking up on any Furry memes...

WebPuppy: I'm not a Furry!
WebPuppy: I might like and buy anthropomorphic art...exclusively from Furry fandom artists...
WebPuppy: I've been to the occassional furry convention and had great fun while keeping my pants on!
WebPuppy: I've met a number of really cool people at a local Furmeet, who Aren'tFurry(tm)
WebPuppy: All the people in my LJ friends list might use Furry avatars..
WebPuppy: *furs
WebPuppy: I freely use a lot of Furry memes and behavours when on-line..
WebPuppy: My browser bookmarks are almost all Furry-related.
WebPuppy: But I'm not a Furry!
WebPuppy: Even the people on CYD say so!

"..."

(feel free to provide other examples of duplicity that we see from a lot of people on this site... :P)

Google, Wikipedia...

In short, in the way I've used the word here, they're the little things and behavours that a group has developed or adopted. Using animal/furry-related nicks, calling furry-fans "furs", the 'everyday' things that're different about a group...

(I forgot to mention this in the previous posting) ... The usual ostracism I've seen for being involved with Furry is not the "dog fucker!" call, but people assuming you've been apart of the emotionally-retarded Furry Status Quo...

Now, let us dissect this stinking carcass that calls itself a "fandom" and explore just what is the "Furry Status Quo". Shall we?

I think it's too much when you cover your computer in fur and give it a cock. Or draw shit like "Full Throttle". But that's just my humble opinion.
