After reading The New Meat's breakdown on webcomics and, more specifically, Gene Catlowe, I schlepped over to his VCL site to check myself before saying anything. Having seen that 90% of his archive consists of nothing more than the perpetuation of his somewhat creepy virtual relationship with Catswhisker, I can now feel justified in saying that I find it hard to take seriously the rants and musings against the evils of modern society from someone that uses the evil, capitalist Internet for this.

So, can we expect to see Temple completely whore out, or someday stand on his soapbox before his congregation of the creator of all things and blubber "Ah..... <sniffle>... Have sinned against you."

If I may be so bold, "CatsWhisker" is a real female by the name of Tawana Gilroy, whom Albert Temple has been romanitcally involved with for nearly a decade and, as far as I can tell, has every intention of marrying once he has the financial means to facilitate and support such.

While I'm no fan of Al's work on VCL, I find it to be far less disturbing then some other examples of work found on the same archive for the following reasons...

1. It portrays a single male and a single female

2. It is (loosely) based off of real-life occurences

3. It does not portray the physically impossible

But I suppose it's none of my concern. Knowing Al as I do, his response to all this would probably something along the lines of;

"Well, I know that no matter what I do, some people aren't going to like it. That's a fact of life. But another fact is, that there are a lot of people who DO like what I do. And, more importantly, -I- like what I do. And as long as that remains a fact, I will continue to do it."

I'll grant you those points. He's not spamming his archive with pictures of macroherms grinding furs under their heel into an olympic-sized pool of spooge. With respect to his comic, however, it seems rather hypocritical for a fellow in one hand to be offering a comic wherein he is the sage with the cure for all of the world's ills, and in the other hand be handing out wank material.

Of course, since the furry answer to the world's ills is apathetic acceptance of everything under the sun, we should be tolerant of his contribution to the furra3=sp00ge equation. On the other hand, his comic really isn't much more than a self-indulgent exercise in "I AM T3H WINNAR! J00 AR3 T3H SUXX0RZ!" as New Meat so astutely profiled the bulk of webcomics out there. So, I suppose it really isn't a matter of waving a fuzzy Bible in one hand and a copy of Penthorse in the other. One hand simply strokes the ego, and one hand strokes the schlong.

On further thought, I'll stand down from my notions from the first post. It's just standard furry hijinks and mediocrity. Nothing to see here, folks. These aren't the droids we're looking for. You can go about your business.... move along.

Where, where?
Where can I find that list of comics by The New Meat?

My webcomic (if I ever get past the good old fashioned "OH I AM GOING TO MAKE A WEBCOMIC but I'm too lazy to start" thing) is going to be for simple epic storytelling and humor. No ethics or politics of any sort, except for the typical "Obvious Good guy kills the obvious evil guy" type of thing.

Any evidence they've actually met in person yet?

I've wondered about that m'self. Not counting cons... something resembling a relationship outside of cyberspace and one or two weekends a year in dealer's rooms.

I'd like to bend Catswhisker over my soapbox. If fact, I think I will. Might take a few tries to get that complex character design down, but when I do, I'm teaching kitty a few new tricks.

On the topic of black furry artists, why do I keep thinking black people should find all of this unbearably corny?

This is NOT what Martin Luther King died for.
(and for some reason the artist keeps reminding me of the guy from Hootie and the Blowfish)

My understanding is that this, however, is a case of illustrating it for posterity instead of getting it on... being a long distance relationship and all. With the amount of work the two of them put into inkfucking, though, it just seems............ creepy. I'm biased against the whole cyber LDR thing, anyway, but this just doesn't ring right with the ol' Spidey sense.

Inkfucking has got to be one of the best things about Furry! And I don't mean that in prurient way...

One of the best entertainments, when you hate all people in general like I do, is watching those "train wreck" dramas by emotionally underdeveloped drop-kicks trying to use their real-life lovelife as a gimmick for bolstering their popularity in the fandom... and then watching it all come tragically crashing down, hopefully taking out a lot of bystanders, and giving the perps a big fat smack to the head with The 2x4 Of Life.

Who could forget...
Jessi "JCH" Pysz telling everyone about the joys of statuary rape..
Jim "StickDevil" Blackboard and Ember "DarkKitten" --- oh boy!
"Nightcrawler" and ? --- no, this guy's artwork is so fucking pathetic, I couldn't be bothered following.
Randy Ethinger & "Jagarani"
Stephine K & David Johns
...and our old friend, Helen "Pink" Galvin.

(And in the 'to be announced' basket, there's Poofler and Chell (if she even exists...), and of course, those who taught Catlow & CatWhiskers everything they know, Kat Ellis and "Shirleymouse"...)

I'm biased against the whole cyber LDR thing, anyway, but this just doesn't ring right with the ol' Spidey sense.

It's been my experience, after having a few housemates who were fucked over by it, that it takes an unhealthy amount of manic obessiveness to maintain a successful LDR. Even their parents made fun of them for being so stupid!

What, like fucking the Lincoln memorial or something? Do you mean statutory rape? Statuary is statues. Statutory is relating to the law.

Caught that too. Now I'm imagining fanboys schtupping themselves on (relatively) anatomically correct statues as the new fad. And one or two said concrete collossi falling over and...

What's sad is I have an idea what inspired that. You know those little ring holder figurines you see sold in drug stores? I think the person who drew that was just trying to be clever, but it's still sad.

There is such a thing as a statue fetish (well, of course there is), though I haven't seen much of it in furry except for Naga's Den. Probably furries want warm, soft scritches and fluffies and smellies, not cold, clean metal and stone.

It's been my experience, after having a few housemates who were fucked over by it, that it takes an unhealthy amount of manic obessiveness to maintain a successful LDR. Even their parents made fun of them for being so stupid!

Some LDRs work. When a couple has a history together and one of them might have to relocate for business for a year or two, it can work. With younger people, however, it especially doesn't, as the natural tendency to explore new horizons kicks in. This is also compounded when the person may not have dated much.

Where things get really sticky is with the advent of the 'net-born relationships. When two people meet online and develop a "romance" through chat, the relationship is starting out on shaky ground. I don't care how much idealistic teens and young adults insist that, on the 'net, all facades are dropped - I don't buy it. If anything, there are more facades on the 'net. I'm not even talking about some fat, hairy 45-year old man pretending to be a 17-year old cheerleader with a shaved crotch. I just mean that, no matter how much 'net socializers think you're getting a more genuine experience than in a physical meeting, you are not learning about the total person. There's no way you can pick up on things like annoying habits, general living style (cleanliness, personal hygine, etc.), or even something like recreational drug use unless the person willingly divulges that information.

So, you get folks deluding themselves into thinking they're forming a solid relationship.

Now, sometimes, romances that blossom on the 'net work. A couple of folks run across each other in personals or chat, find they have a lot in common, start seeing each other on holidays and such, and eventually decide to move closer together to pursue the relationship further. Hell, why not. That has at least more of a basis for romance and mutual interest than many arranged marriages through history and in other cultures.

But, a lot of 'net romances are simply folks that talk a lot online, have cybersex or even invest in webcams, and never or rarely meet. You naturally see a lot of these in furrydom, where conventions may be the only time two little cyber love bugs can get together. Something like this may work, on occasion, but it's rare. Then, when you get folks like Cat and Gene that devote what appears to be a fair bit of energy to perpetuating this "relationship" through their drawings, and it gets a little weird. It's almost like they're trying to convince themselves they have something more than the phone line between them. It's like the furries that figure if they draw themselves as a wolf enough times, they'll, in a way, start to really be one. Tell yourself something enough times, and you'll start to believe it's true.

Now, I'm not trying to suggest their relationship is a lie. It could be one of those few that proves to stand the test of time and distance. But, on the other hand, have been through a couple of these things myself, the odds are stacked against them. The thing that makes me use the term "creepy" for it is almost everything you see of them in his archive is them screwing or just generally rolling around in bed, naked. They don't seem to be capable of even talking without stripping down and crawling into bed first. Of couse, this is just what we see in his archive. There may be plenty other images that are more casual. But, at least what is shown to the general populace just makes the thing seem a bit obsessive on perpetuating the illusion of a genuine sexual relationship.

If it makes him happy, great. I won't stop him. Still... it makes the Spidey sense tingle. Something just doesn't sit right in the back of the mind. Overall, though, it's pretty standard fare for furry socialization.

Hey I would go there sometime within the next 10 years if it werent for the fact thats its remote (i think).

I knew more about the place a while ago, like why its there what its about. But I would go simply because I like rats, so there ya go. I think its the north near Kashmir or Pakistan.

http://judypat.com/india/karnimata.htm

They (rats) are living it up in the lap of luxury there.
The mention the white rats which are good luck if you even see them, Im pretty sure its also supposed to be good luck if you get nipped by one.

Nonono, rats don't give you leprosy. They give you plague.

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but when I see a picture of a little kid with a bunch of rats... well, I think it's kinda cute.
