Seriously, if I ever cosplayed, I wouldn't cram myself into some spandex outfit to try and look like my favorite character. Actually, I wouldn't even dress as my favorite characters. If I could, I'd probably try and do a costume like Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin), Sesshomaru or Miroku (Inuyasha). But, a guy that looks like Michael Chiklis from The Shield is NOT going to cut it as those characters, no matter how fit he is. I'd probably just make up a character and design a costume off of that. With the right materials and such, what I'd probably do is a lion dancer from Kabuki performances. That way, the facepaint obscures natural features that may look unnnatural in trying to be an anime character, the wig, while outlandish, is not trying to look like some spikey anime head, and... I just think they're cool.

It actually is possible to find entertainment from some of the shenanigans people pull without truly mocking them. With the cosplayers, some of us, if not most or all, are not mocking the people, but the choices they make. Take Donut Rinoa. The girl is actually kind of cute, and I do prefer a little more meat on my women than what the media would have me think I should lust after (Paris Hilton, Wayd? I tend to steer away from air-headed skanks.) But.... while I make no assumption on her as a person, her choice of costuming is still entertaining. It's kind of the anime version of What Not to Wear.

I constantly see people that dress to keep up with the latest fashion trends, when those trends are not something that is flattering to their body. Capri pants are in with the soccer moms, but most soccer moms look terrible with their wide thighs and skinny legs crammed into a pair of pastel blue capris and finished off a pair of mules that are like clogs. But, that's what humans do.. mindlessly follow trends and fashions and such. While I won't assume they're complete morons for doing so, I can still allow myself to be amused by their current attire.

American cosplay is, for the most part, a parade of people that look nothing like a character assembling costumes out of the cheapest materials with marginal sewing skills. I don't think any of us are knocking them for doing something they find fun. We all do stupid stuff for fun... stuff others might point and laugh at. But, when someone does a Dragonball Z costume and makes super saiyan hair out of foam rubber and colored with a highlighter..... that's pretty entertaining. Moreso if they take themselves seriously.

And some of us, being of artistic bent, might also look at it from the standpoint of craftsmanship. Many cosplayers aim high, but fall short on the time and work invested in a costume and skimp on materials. They also don't put much thought into a character costume that will let them work within their skill set and budget.

For example, take the costume of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat someone posted here. That is a deceptively involved costume to make it look decent. If you're just going to sew some yellow pannels onto some black cloth with marginal skill, it's not going to look decent. On top of which, that kind of surcoat is going to hang funny on someone who doesn't at least have a modest build. So, is it a costume you could do effectively?

Raiden, from the same game series, is, alternatively, a fair bit easier. Instead of making a really detailed costume, a simple gi is the foundation, and you can pick those up at any marial arts supply store. If you go with later versions of him, he wore a tunic which is pretty simple.. a swath of cloth with black trim and a place to poke your head through. Some black forearm guards, white tabi with leg wraps, a coolie hat, and you're done. I black, stretchy cowl that you can pick up during Halloween will add the finishing touch, but it isn't inherently necessary. When I did a Raiden costume years ago, I also put some blue glowstick rope inside the hat to cast a blue glow on my eyes.

So, chill out. We're just finding ourselves amused by the zany stuff people do for fun. We're not saying Donut Rinoa is a bad person.. just in a bad costume. To paraphrase the knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, "She chose.......... poorly."

And personally, I wasn't aware CYD had any credibility, let alone any concerns about it.
