For the benefit of those who want critter comics without the furry fetish:
Recently published by ADV Manga, "Apocalypse Meow" by Motofumi Kobayashi is a Vietnam War story, featuring rabbits and cats. Vol. 1 out already, Vol. 2 due out soon.
http://www.adv-manga.com/catalog/MANGAMAM001.asp
Originally published as "Cat Shit One" in Japan, it was a follow on from Kobayashi's humanocentric "Dog Shit One" (a chapter of which is in the back of AM#1), also set during the Vietnam War.
Detailed artwork, well researched. The animals themselves are fairly realistically depicted, just standing on their hind legs and carrying machine guns.
I haven't seen any mention of this on alt.fan.furry yet, so I'm guessing it's (hopefully) slipped under their radar.
If the admin's don't mind, I'll use this thread to highlight any anthropomorphic animal comics that may be of interest, particularly those from outside The Fandom. |

Gold Digger ring a bell?
Although, recently I've discovered the phurraies trying to latch their leech-like teeth on the series. Pisses me off.
At least good old Fred hasn't given in to their... ahem... perversions. |

For once, I won't grouse about how it'll get hijacked by some ill-meaning furvert (because it will, as a foregone conclusion), and instead will celebrate new non-furry anthro goodness.
A very good post, mister... um, Skunkfunker. If I stumble across any new comics, manga or books I'll contribute as well. You never know what'll pop up in scanlation circles. |

AFF is exactly where I heard about it (thanks Doodles, where ever you are, for periodically providing the most useful information on all of A.F.F).
Its probably the only Manga that has even gotten my interest at all.
heres hoping Im not dissapointed when I get around to buying it.
If the admin's don't mind, I'll use this thread to highlight any anthropomorphic animal comics that may be of interest, particularly those from outside The Fandom.
what about WE3 from Vertigo, which I also heard about on AFF. and heres the best part - its not manga.
They are all anthropomorphics comics, though..just so you know
like you can call Genus a 'furry fetish' comic, but its also 'anthropomorphic' or funny-animal. Thats the commonality between all of it. thems the facts. Furry comics are just influenced or created by thier own fandom. <- period
I'm still iffy on the 'fetish' issue. oh well, fuck it. I don't really care that much right now.
Also: Im sure Fred Perry is a great guy.. but sadly, Gold Digger, like most 'manga' - is a steaming pile of shit. so who cares
PS. WAY too many anime fans propping up thier own fandom while simulataneously bashing on furry fandom lately. Its really kind of disgraceful. We can stop pretending that Anime is any different from furry now. If its fucked up to enthusiastically enjoy cartoon animals for that reason alone - then its also fucked to ethusiastically enjoy a piece of media simply for the fact it comes from 1 single particular culture or very small part of the world (or is merely emulating it..or more often than not - making a half-assed, pathetic attempt at emulating it). Sorry, but its true, and its right there in your face. Someone already made a comment within the past couple days about an anime-inspired piece of furry art saying : it would be 'jerkable' if it were human cartoon characters (the pic was 3 ditzy-looking big-tittie females). self-effacing humor?
Can we please drop the pretentiousness now? that would be nice. |

Blacksad Vol. 1: Somewhere Within the Shadows
Blacksad Vol. 2: Arctic Nation
Written by Juan Díaz Canales
Art by Guarnido
Published by iBooks
Review of Vol. 1
Preview Vol.1
Preview Vol.2
(Although the page samples for #2 are the same as for #1)
European Anthropomorphic Noir, and utterly stylish it is too. If you only get one, get "Arctic Nation", as that has a much better story, dealing with racism (one area where having talking animals as an allegory works). "Somewhere Within the Shadows" is a little too by-the-numbers pulp detective, and has a tendency towards puns and cliche, as if Canales was still finding his feet. Guarnido's artwork, in both volumes, is gorgeous.
Vol.1 was nominated for both the 2004 Harvey and Eisner awards. |

Looks like he's pulled a lot from his archive since I last looked at it a couple of years ago. You are aware, however, that he used to contribute fairly frequently to Genus. |

what? since when was fred perry NOT a furry?
I could swear back in the mid 90s that gold digger was a huge furry comic. in fact, i didn't know many people outside furry fandom who read it when it first started up.
and what about all the furry porn fred perry draws or used to draw? all those issues of genus he's been in and such. |

Hrm, Genus, I remember hearing of that comic. Luckily enough it's impossible to get now a days. And I jumped unto Gold Digger around 98 I think when Fred started steering towards the mainstream.
He has, from what I seen, kept the "extreme stuff" out of the public eye lately. I do know he has some portfolio books for sale, some clean, some... err... not so clean. He has been focussing more on humans though in his work. |

Well, let's see...
There's a couple of autheurs of Bande Desinèes (yeah, French folks) who have been using animals on most of their comics, aimed to adult audiences, since the early 80s. Their names are Ben Radis (illustrator) and Dodo (writer).
They are the creators of "Gomina", a detective series started in 1983, using Disneyesque anthropomorphized insects.
From the same authors, you can also get Max et Nina, featuring this time dogs.
Another French author is Jano, and he's been drawing acid comics with underground-like animals on a comics publisher named Les Humanoïdes Associés ( http://www.humano.com/ ) since the 80s. Here's a little sample of his works:
Uhm. Now that I remember these comics, that were on Angoulème and even got some awards (like the Blacksad series quoted by SkunkfuNker), there's a certain comic on Skunk parodizing Jim Groat's trip to THAT comics con that comes to mind...

Having just finished reading Apocalypse Meow, I can strongly recommend it in good conscience. If Art Spiegelman wrote and illustrated The Nam, it would not be far off. Other recent animal comics of note include Peanutbutter & Jeremy by James Kochalka and Southpaw by Scott Morse.
EDIT: Kobayashi is a much stronger illustrator than Spiegelman. He has a very realistic, and controlled style. |

Speaking of Peanutbutter and Jeremy, some books by James Kochalka.
Great For Kids:
Peanutbutter & Jeremy's Best Book Ever (Alternative Comics)
Peanutbutter is a cat, who likes to do office work, and wears a tie (because that's what office workers wear). Jeremy is a crow, who lives in the tree outside Peanutbutter's window, and who likes to play tricks on her.
Pinky & Stinky (Top Shelf)
Pinky and Stinky are the first piglets in space; these are their adventures after they crashland on the moon.
Monkey Vs Robot (Top Shelf)
Monkey Vs Robot and the Crystal of Power (Top Shelf)
Monkeys! Fighting Robots! It's an allegory of Nature Vs Technology! Or something. Monkeys!
Definately Not For kids:
Fancy Froglin's Sexy Forest (Alternative Comics)
Fancy Froglin is a frog. Fancy has a boner. Fancy likes having a boner, and wants to show everyone. But, as he says, "I wear little pants to hide my genitals! It's the Law!". Funny stuff, if you like that sort of thing (I know I do), and not in the least bit Yiffy.
You can see Kochalka's daily webstrip/journal at http://www.americanelf.com; it's been published as The Sketchbook Diaries (Top Shelf). He's had several other books published through Top Shelf, Alternative Comics, and Highwater Books. He's also in a band, James Kochalka Superstar, which has put out a few CDs. |

One of my favourites, and hailing from Norway, is the mono-named JASON.
www.mjaumjau.net
There's a weekly strip on there, along with bibliographies. Very distinctive style; stark black and white, heavy on the spot blacks. Oddly dead-pan characters, but they can be very expressive at times. Many of the strips are silent/wordless. Seems to have a fondness for the old Universal Monsters (Frankenstein, Mummy, Dracula, Zombies), and Darth Vader.
Fantagraphics has published most of his works in the US.
"Hey, Wait"
An idyllic summer turns into a childhood tragedy, and the consequences.
"Sshhhh!"
Short silent stories, featuring the same protagonist.
"The Iron Wagon"
An adaptation of a mystery novel.
"You Can't Get There From Here"
Love, jealousy and violence, with a mad scientist, his hunchbacked assistant, a monster and the bride of the monster.
Also numerous short strips in various indy comics. |

Dungeon Vol 1: Duck Heart
By Joann Sfar and Lewis Trondheim
Here's a good reason to "wait for the trade". Dungeon was originally published in b&w, as 24pp comics. The first volume, collecting issues #1-4 is printed in full colour, which is a vast improvement (albeit at a slightly smaller size than the comics, and I'd assume a much smaller size than the original albums).
A fantasy humour story that pokes fun at Sword & Sorcery tropes, you don't need a twelve-sided die or a Dungeon Master's Guide to appreciate it.
Hopefully, Volume 2, covering issues #5-8, will be published soonish, and NBM will go straight to publishing further collected volumes rather than serialising it in comics form first. (This seems to work for Tokyopop, so maybe there's something in it.)
Review of Dungeon #1 at iComics
If this does well, perhaps NBM will see about collecting Trondheim's McConey stories, and his autobiographical stuff, in which he draws everyone as animals. |

http://www.choppingblock.org/ 110% Awesome, even though its on a hiatus currently. Humorous comics about a serial killer's life.
http://www.atomictoy.org/ Awesome spoofs of DBZ (Buttlord GT) and other funny stuff, you should enjoy this one M0us3. |

The Dungeon thing triggers a memory of Larry Elmore's SnarfQuest. It had a blend of humans and anthro characters, though decidedly unfurry. Reading the comic will also give you lessons in inking by osmosis. |

Apocalypse Meow Vol 3 came out his week. It's the third and final part. You know the score: the war in Vietnam, but with rabbits and cats.
If you're lucky, you might still be able to get copies of Morrison and Quitely's WE3 #2. It's The Incredible Journey, but with Cyborg Bio-Weapons.
Available from the better sort of Picture Story Emporiums. |

I recently ordered a bunch of Tank Girl graphic novels (might technically be considered furry, what with the mutant kangaroo porn and all) used from Amazon, and got the pilot issue of this comic bundled along free with one of them. The artwork is great, anf the story has potential, so I'll probably order a few more whenever I have some more money to spend. |

I heard Madonna was supposed to have sex with Booger in the movie, I guess.. but the scene was never filmed.
I bought that Hipflask Elephant Men a while ago, but havent even read it yet. The art is really good though. At the same time I also picked up a story from 'Homage Comics' (which is apperently associated with DC) called Stray. Its about a regular (non-morphic) stray dog that gets inhabited by an alien intelligence. The artwork is a nice blend between being realistic and also cartoony. |

TALKING TO JASON
Interview with JASON (Hey, Wait..., Sshhhh) at Newsarama.com.
NRAMA: I read you used to do stories with people in them then you stopped. Why did you start using animals?
Jason: My first book was drawn in a realistic style using people but I wasn’t that happy with the result and it took a long time. I started trying other styles like this cartoony style. The animal characters were one of those styles and at the same time I discovered Lewis Trondheim. So I continued working in that style.

Out recently:
DUNGEON Vol. 2: The Barbarian Princess
Lewis TRONDHEIM & Joann SFAR
The next two stories in this tongue-in-cheek Fantasy/Horror series. In the first, Herbert’s fictitious Princess in distress to lure more hapless warriors to the Dungeon turns out to be all too real and quite a handful! In the second, the Dungeon’s Dragon, centerpiece of its defense, is dead, long live the... wait, where will they find the replacement?
"It's one of the best comedy / adventure comics in print, filled with amusing characters, great visual imagination and involving stories. You should let it take you away on the back of a hipplodontus." -Time.comix
65/8x9, 96pp. full color trade pb., $14.95, ISBN 1-56163-421-2
I also recently found a copy of Trondheim's "McConey Vol.2: The Hoodoodad", which was nice.
Furrlough looks like it could do with some new stuff; they're reprinting an old Dog Starr strip. Maybe I should put pen to paper and send something in; considering some the strips they've had they'll print any old thing as long as there's a talking animal... |

I'm surprised furries haven't latched on to Fables much. You'd think they'd be going apeshit for something like that.
Maybe most hardcore furries only like stuff that's purely anthro. Good. Fables is a great comic without hardcore furry lifestylers lame-ifying it. |

The way I see it, it's been out for ages and if they haven't already latched on to it, they most likely won't ever. Besides, now that I think about it, there's no busty vixens in it so there's no appeal for furries in the first place. |
