Looks like Jeremy "Cullen" Bernal is growing more and more paranoid about art pirates raping his soul.

First, he's put out a $250 bounty out for the real identity of one "Alaska" and offering free accounts to anyone who provides him with logs of anyone who has gone to the #furryxdcc IRC room.

Howdy folks. Shit's been hitting the fan lately with morons ripping off my stuff. I shut down probably 2 yahoo groups daily, send legal notices to ISPs, etc. etc. etc. it's becoming such a pain in the ass that I do question why I bother to keep putting out the art.

No, I'm not going to quit. Because I'd have to go back into the hideous video game industry, or worse, the animation industry, and that's just not going to happen if I still have 2 brain cells left to rub together.

BUT... it's such a royal pain. Folks share their passwords and soon enough I find my stuff crapped out all over IRC, Kazaa, and bit torrents. Granted the webserver emails me twice a day letting me know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but it can only tell me after the fact that so-and-so has downloaded the site 4 times in its entirety from 4 different domains. Same as in real life, you can't say someone stole something until they have walked out the door without paying. Yeah I can lock them out when I catch them, but it doesn't undo the damage.

I try to keep a distance between myself and the "fandom" both for the thouroghly creepy vibe I used to get at the conventions, and I think it keeps my views and art focus objective. Unfortunately this results in the fact that I don't know where to hunt for the morons who steal my stuff. Thank heavens for the loyal fans who drop me tips about where they find my stuff reposted where it shouldn't be.

You hack fuckers are robbing the food out of my fridge. Literally. Hope it makes you happy, throwing someone else's hard work around as you stomp in glee on the broken back of the guy who actually sweats for his bread.

Remembering that he was still in a rage about his soul rape, he comes back and posts this:

This week's update will be late. Not that it's not ready, but the server is getting new authentication and security software installed to curb the outbreak of password sharing that's been going on.

Basically, folks who share passwords will get cut off automatically more efficiently than they already do. Proxied downloaders will be cut off instantly. Site ripping tools will not work, and brute force password scripts will be rendered innefective.

An overall hardening of security.

It's a lowdown shame it's necessary.

Yeah, the gimps that have been taking my stuff will likely get in for this week's new stuff at first, but then the fun begins as all the cheaters get put away one by one. So if your password stops working, you know why. Contact me to have it changed. I'll know if it's honest or not.

The new stuff should be in before the weekend, and then I'll post this week's new images.

Nothing will change to the site interface, ability to save images to your own machine, etc. Only the username authentication and management methods will change.

Personally, I can't stand Bernal's stuff. The characters are mostly your generic stock foxwolffeline or occasional bunny. His body form is pretty solid, but there's no variation... it's generally the same body with a different head and fur patterning. I mean, heck, even this "doe" looks like nothing more than a fox with antlers and a short tail. For all of diversity they talk about, furry realms are sadly homogeneous.

What really turns me off of his work, though, is how heavily Photoshopped it is. Winger I'll at least give credit for having a good sense of when to cut back on the shading, and a good sense of light and dark to pull out the form. Bernal, however, is just far too heavy-handed with the shading, so everything winds up being so heavily shadowed that it doesn't pull out the form.. it just makes it dark. Take a look at this fur on the beach. Here she is, in the freaking full sun, and she has shadows on her like she's in a dingy, smoky nightclub. Does he go to dimly lit strip clubs for all of his models? The light casts her shadow behind her, yet her face where it's directed at the light source is still heavily shadowed. And what's with the way he does hair? You couldn't get flatter looking if you just did a simple gradient fill.

So, for my two cents, Bernal's cookie-cutter oozing foxwolffelinebunnies have just never appealed to me on any level.

Okay, it sucks that what he's doing for a livelihood is suffering at the hands of pirates but... really... it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to be doing this for his income. At the very least, open up an adult video store and work on his art between selling Jenna Jameson squirting, vibrating love dolls and $50 anal beads. Trying to make a living off of commissions and a furry adult website is kind of like trying to make it big selling Bose wave radios to the deaf.

Everything else aside, we are talking about porn here. I have a bunch of issues of club magazine, and every single section is girls in the same poses, just in different settings or backgrounds. So I'm not quite sure what people are getting with this sort of thinking. Porn has 1 purpose and its always going to be, to a large degree, homogeneous.

I really don't have anythign to say about Bernal wigging out over 'pirates' ect. But what would digital-based art be other than 'heavily photoshopped'. Thats just a medium. Personally I like his art that Ive seen, but not enought to pay for memberships or buy artwork from him. He focuses mainly on that pay-porn site of his, but I do know that he has art plate portfolios out there (expensive, considering). So its not like thats all he does.

Personally, if I was so worried about someone stealing my work, I'd find a safer method to distribute it (CD-Roms perhaps? Dr. Comet does that.). Of course, that's not going to really stop people like Sibe. You can't completely stop it from being distributed illegally, that's a given. But it's the best you can do while still distributing it.

And as there being no money in commissions? You could charge $100 for a sketch, there's obviously alot of drooling fanboys out there with money to burn. (Remember that painting that sold for 15 grand or so? Yeah, there's some rich idiots out there.)

I never really had any grand vision for the thing, not sure where you're coming from there. It was done by a 3rd-party company that put it together on their own and then ignored it. No sweat off my brow, no big deal that it didn't go anywhere. I thought folks could have fun with it, had plans to replace some of their game art with SexyFur art, but they never got back to me on how to plug it in.

I'm going to stick with my statement about commissions. You could charge a decent about for a rough sketch. You're a pretty popular artist, so people are probably willing to piss away money for your work. I think the main point is not just the issue of copyright, but the arrogance that some artists have when all they do is dull crud that most people wouldn't want to pay real money for.

I mean, when you get down to it, it's person A whining about Person B's ripping off of lame artwork that Person A created to rip off Persons C-Z (and Persons C-Z won't know the scam until they shell out their $$, and by then it's too late).

And by the look of the way Bernal handles the billing of his website, he doesn't seem to pay much attention who has active accounts and who doesn't. Would YOU want to hand over your credit card number to someone who isn't paying attention? What chances would you have when you ask to cancel an account and expect to have the billing stop?

I mean, if it was a paysite with the scope of FurNation or VCL, I could see how that might be more lucrative. Or, if SexyFur.com was just your own little artistic segment of a larger site you operated marketing adult goods... like a virtual Pabo outlet store or something.

I mean, hey, if you're content with the income it brings and you enjoy what you do, then you're living the American dream. Everything else aside, we are talking about porn here. I have a bunch of issues of club magazine, and every single section is girls in the same poses, just in different settings or backgrounds. So I'm not quite sure what people are getting with this sort of thinking. Porn has 1 purpose and its always going to be, to a large degree, homogeneous.

My stint with porn magazines was short-lived, though I have a fair bit still archived on CDs. I guess it might depend on what you look for in your porn. I personally find more "artistic" nudes, such as this or this, where you get a real sense of the nude form, but without necessarily seeing everything, to be far more titilating than your standard Hustler spread shot. That's not to say I have no love for your average porn, but, by and large, when I seek out nudes, I seek out what is a bit more artful and captures a moment more than a pose. That's one reason I favor Japanese nude photography over most American fare. A simple nude of a gal in a hot spring.. perhaps a shot selected from when the camera was snapping, but she wasn't really posing... catches my interest much more than some DD blonde oiled up and spreading her labia. So, yeah, a lot of porn is pretty cookie-cutter, unless you look for what's unique. It's like, when you want a beef fix... you could go to McDonald's and get a serviceable slab of beef, or you could head to one of Emeril's restaurants. Both have their place.

That's part of this deal that mystifies me. Sure, if you're making a living selling your artwork, and someone is pirating it, then that's a pretty sucky deal. Of course, if you're making a living through membership fees to a site featuring almost exclusively digital artwork, it's rather absurd to think you're art won't be pirated. After all, it's not like it involves the effort of scanning, using filters to counter the moire effect, and compressing and uploading. All they have to do is click, save, and upload.

Plus, as you said, this isn't like setting up a BitTorrent of the first season DVDs of Northern Exposure or Hellboy. Sure, it takes effort, but I don't consider drawing, scanning, and photoshopping a dripping bunny spreadshot to be the same level of work required by professional musicians, animators, actors, and the people that work to produce those works, such as fire safety staff, mixing board operators, the go-fer intern that gets the donuts and bottled water, etc.

There is script out there that can help make images on a web page so they can't be downloaded. When you try to right click them, instead of the menu for saving, printing, and such, you just get a window that often states the copyright information and lets you click a button to exit. Of course, with Internet Explorer's new "floating" toolbar that will pop up if the pointer hovers over an image, you can get around that. But, some places still have ways of dealing with it. 1024x748 Wallpapers is like that.

Of course, he could also have each image consist of a series of tiles that are separate parts of the image, as many sites do with their graphics. That wouldn't stop someone from saving each tile and reassembling them in a paint program. But, it would help deter some pirates not willing to go through such an effort.

Overall, though, if you set up a site where folks can pay to get to your art and download it, you're just setting yourself up for piracy.

This is true. I'm learning I have more ambition than I used to think I did. Guess it comes from having gotten out of school and into the real world. Just today it dawned on me what to say if someone said "What would you want to be doing 5 years from now?"

The only thing I ever subscribed to was the Gigantic Usenet Binaries Archive (GUBA). It basically provides a visual interface to all of the alt.binaries groups. When I moved and switched ISPs, the one I went with didn't have handy-dandy Usenet access through something like Outlook Express. GUBA was nice because you could get thumbnails for all of the alt.binaries groups, so you didn't have to click on a post and wait for the image to load to see if it was worth saving. It was only about $10 a month.
