Thats looks like it was an alright time. Im not as into old video games as I used to be though. This was in California somewhere?

those prices were fuckign WAY out there. There are all these run down 2nd hand video game dealers around me, one of which has old 80's full size arcade machines you can buy usually for a couple hundred dollars... why pay $40 (or $100!) for a fucking Nintendo? Then again, on second thought, maybe I should buy a moving van and start hitting up these conventions.

I cant find Uforia
I got just gimmick, and gave it a shot. its pretty hard, I couldnt even get past the second area..like the VERY second area, right after you go down the pipe at the end of the first screen, maybe cuz i been drinkin

I dont suppose you know (or can direct me to a place with how-to sort of info) how to extract data from different media into a ROM-type format? Its not likely I could do it myself anytime soon, but Id like to know the fundamentals. I have some harder to find games (err, far as I know) floating around on 5.25s that are slowly deteriorating, Im sure. also maybe a few Atari 800 cartridge and cassette based games.

As far as the atari 800 goes, the one game I think is really, truely impressive was 'Necromancer'. Tho I did find it on ROM pretty easily. I originally had it on cassette. it was, IMO, a really good game for the time period.

I'm a kid from the 80s, myself, and have fond memories from the early gaming systems. I like them so much that I've even made a comic series about a couple of gamers on the 80s... As soon as I find a publisher willing to pay good money for them, I'll make it a series.

I think I miss the times when games were much simpler to develop and play. Besides, in those days, there were few 'proven formulas' and developers were much more inventive to create games than what they are now. I could write a long essay about early games, but I guess I'll reserve that for my Livejournal, since it would be offtopic on this board.

What I'd like to mention is that, truth be told, I don't understand all this hype about early videogames. I'd probably assist a vintage Gaming Expo, like Computolio did, but just for curiosity, to see things I haven't seen already, like strange prototypes, or to see old memorabilia. Who knows, I may go and buy something I'd like to get... but I wouldn't even think about getting an old system, especially on these days, when emulation can bring me the old games as they exactly were.

I know some people are -still- creating games for systems like the Atari 2600, C64 and Atari 8-bit series, but the sad truth is that those systems are defunct, dead, kaputt. It's pretty much like what happens with the fixation of a reduced group of people who are STILL trying to keep the Amiga alive, even if it disappeared from the market a decade ago. Computers evolve incredibly fast on the times we're living and are able to do things we even't dreamed of to do back in the time.

So then... what's the use of having a NES today? Or a Commodore 64 or VIC-20? Those are only useful if you're planning to create a museum, because that's all what they are nowadays: museum pieces. useless museum pieces.

Much of it is nostalgia for things that they weren't even around for. Like the way the kids did 60s retro and then went to 70s retro when 60s became passe, and now are into the 80s. Hot Topic for a long while has had a lot of 80s reference material including Atari and Transformers crap worn by kids who weren't born until after 85.

People ask how I got into broadband, I tell them I learned wiring the hard way: making Pong-type games and then the Atari 2600(also Colecovision, Bally Arcade, etc.) work with a variety of already past their prime shitty televisions. Same way I got into programming really, because you had to if you wanted to make anything new.

Anyone else remember when Atari crowing about 12K on a cart was big news and the height of hacking was recording Atari ROMs to a cassette tape? Although, I knew someone who did it to 8-track.

Y' know, people need to start realizing that the Atari 2600 was a piece of shit even for it's time. NOTHING looked good on it, and almost nothing played good on it. In fact all Atari consoles looked awful up until the Lynx. Their computer series was pretty good though.

At least, it was better than the Odyssey 2 (or Philips VideoPac). I had one. Games were much lamer than the Atari 2600's and I had many less games to play. I admit that their Pac-man rip-off was much better than the Atari's official Pac-Man.

True enough. The Colecovision beat the crap out of it for quality but people just had to have the almighty freaking Atari. After staying up forty-nine straight hours on Coca-Cola, Italian bread, and Slim Jims, just to see how many times you can flip over Asteroids before Combat starts to look good again, you begin to wonder if Nolan Bushnell ever getting called to account for the $140+ price of it given how much it bit. Then you would see the Androbot some years later and realize, "nope, people are pretty much suckers."

I loved the Mattel Aquarius for how well they did Burger Time on it, but other than that it too pretty much blew chunks. Neat little thermal printer though.

That's sad about the Amiga. I finally gave up my last one.. my 4000 w/ 272M Fast, 2M Chip, 60GB UW SCSI, and an 8M video card... when I moved. God, the thousands I sunk into it... because, well, it worked... and when it didn't, you just, you know, turned it off and didn't run A before B so it wouldn't guru.

It had 2K of RAM, a Z80, and if you were lucky enough, you found a peripherial for it. I still have my Aquarius. As the developers said, "The 1970's home computer, for you, now, in the 80s". It was a pile of shit. I barely had enough RAM to write a simple slot machine game in BASIC before I ran out of RAM.

I was once a fanboy.

.. I'm much better now.

(At the time of this picture, I was living on Jack Daniels and Guinness. Oddly, this was pre-furry. DURING furry, I actually lost weight. Go fig.)

Also, fuck you all. The Intellivision was your god. It could talk, do multilevel scrolling, had a built in pre-MIDI audio system... a ROM kernal (sic) for a basic OS, was 16 bit clean... oh, and this was 1979.

I know some people are -still- creating games for systems like the Atari 2600, C64 and Atari 8-bit series <...>

Australian Gen-X'ers have something they call the "Falafel Moment", named after a famous underground book by John Birmingham, and it is basically the moment of epiphany that marks the end of 'young' adulthood.

My Falafel Moment came when I woke up in the late afteroon in a Fortitude Valley (Brisbane) warehouse-cum-goth condo (some of the rooms were suspended from the 20 metre-high ceiling, that you needed to climb ropes to get at.) Surrounding me were workbenches in the full swing of manufacturing pirate Atari cartidges. The year was 1996.

It took me a few minutes to notice that some friends of mine had dragged me here while they hunted for their RPG fix. A week later, I would be in Armidale, 500kms away, paying for a housing bond in cash.

Moon Patrol was actually a Williams game, and it's what allowed them to amass enough fortune to create other games, such as Defender and Joust.

That theme music sync'd in the background with the sidescrolling terrain was so kickass - we never got anything decent grade until the NES. The Intellivision tried damned hard, but most of the INTV games that were decent side scrollers were actually developed in about 1987.

You mean licensed to Williams from Irem. Also, it came out a year or two after Defender.

Holy crap, I wanna go! I'd be the only guy there with muscles ha ha.

Seriously, I adore my NES collection, and I started expanding to Genesis... maybe Atari, Channel F and Colecovision if I can ever get my grubby hands on 'em!

The prices on the NES and Top Loader NES are correct. That is the actual "street value" of these things. The NES is 39.99 at Gamestop if you're lucky enough to find one that still sells 'em.

I found an AWESOME little shop here in the city that still buys and sells old video games. Man, those places are a dyin' breed!

I stand corrected. I knew I had something wrong, but not TWO things wrong. I keep fucking that up because I was in a test market for Moon Patrol (or my clock is way off, but I do recall it being about my sixth - I didn't get to see Defender until about '84.

I like how you mentioned how shitty collectors can be, what with NEVER PLAYING THE GAMES THEY COLLECT. Screw those assholes. I play all my games and I refuse to use emulators because I don't think they can capture the magic* of these classics.

I'm pissed about the $40 NES not just because it's possible to find one for a quarter that amount or less but because back when the GBA came out, I sold mine. It had the full Mario trilogy, all 6 Megaman games, the Zeldas, StarTropics I and II, Kirby's Adventure and other really good shit. I got $30 for the whole shebang. OH NO NOT BITTER OH NO

My emulators seem to fuck up NES games just like the real system did. Now thats authenticity. The only prob is I cant blow in the cartridges like harmonica in a desperate attempt to get a game working.

NES really kind of sucked. Nintendos single advantage was the amount of games available. Customer loyalty was all that kept them around. Judging by your list, and last I knew, look like you have 450 or so more to go to get the complete set?

I think I sold mine, everything that went with it and all my games (probably about 40-50) for $40. I had probably a very similiar set of games. All the mario, megaman, zelda games. I remember I had startropics 1.

I dont even remember what happend to my Atari 2600... my atari 800 is MIA but presumably still in the house somewhere.

Now I know exactly why all these older car guys I know bitch about prices on parts and musclecars they sold in the late 70's early 80's for hundreds of dollars.

I wouldn't pay $40 a nintendo thats bullshit. No one threw them out, they arn't rare. They are mostly being horded (either by collectors or more likely thrown in an attic or basement, or whatever).

Tho I know places you can get stuff cheaper. Mainly the Superflea in Buffalo. So long as you dont mind buying dirty cartridges from some white trash guy selling from his van.

Why dont you guys keep an eye on swap sheets and classifieds instead of even bothering with second hand game retailers where are you guaranteed to not get a deal on any of this shit? If you arn't already doign so. There is a few of those type of shops in my area , and I almost laughed at the guy when I seen the pricetags. (tho that same shop Im thinking of has all the cheap 80s arcade machines you can either play for .25 or buy outright.)

Someone will dig these systems out of an attic come spring cleaning and dump them in a newspaper/garage sale/ebay for next to nothing.

Oh yeah, and Goodwill always has nintendo systems and games real cheap.

You can find a NES for cheap but you gotta LOOK HARD. So yeah, selling your NES was a big mistake. It's only going to get more expensive. And selling it for that cheap? Yeah, that was also a bad move. You gotta check what the value of these things before doing that. If you did you could have got up to 148.29 (according to what you have listed here.)

The NES can work just fine as long as you clean it. All you gotta do is buy some rubbing alcohol and q-tips and just go over the little metal connectors a few times.

Now if you want it working BETTER than new buy a 72 pin connector here http://www.electricquarter.com/ninadapt.htm and install it (which is a somewhat easy process, like putting in a new sound card.) I only have to jiggle my really old carts, but it takes only a few seconds to do that then the game is working, unlike before when I would fiddle with it for hours.

YEAH RIGHT. I'm an obsessed dork, but there's no way in hell I'm going to waste my life looking for all 700+ carts.

Here and here. As an added bonus, they contain GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE in addition to the intros, so you can experience the choppy nightmare as if you were ACTUALLY PLAYING IT.

That's several hours you'll never get back now. Not that the effort isn't appreaciated, it is, but the most I noticed from the ad was bad grammer.

"He's using it to stop destroying history."

Wait, why is he destroying history in the first place? And why does he need an Amiga to stop himself? And why do so many British guys look like Alan Moore? And doesn't Alan Moore just look like the kind of guy you'd imagine would write From Hell?
