I just ran across an interesting news story today: Game Characters Pose for Playboy.

1) Does this seem alarming at all? Or is it no big deal, just an indication of games and game characters registering deeper into the mainstream conciousness?
3) Can a character cross those lines without losing integrity or become an element of hypocrisy?
2) Does this give creedance to people who draw porn of game characters?

Discuss.

I see it as game companies returning the favor. About 20 miles from my house, there is a small software company that was awarded a contract from Playboy to program a Playboy Mansion game for the PC.

I don't think anything of it. More Playboy sophmoric behaviour. Nothing serious. Not like the average Playboy reader will whack off to it.

Fixed. Yeah, I was going to reference that as another little mainstream porn oddity.

It turns out another thing in the works is Hugh Hefner and Stan Lee are supposed to "team up" to create some sort of Playboy themed comic called Hugh's Super Bunnies, which smells of typical intercompany marketing strategy, but crossing into porn territory is an odd twist.

Not really that big of a deal, there's already video game porn out there. It's not that hard to believe someone would find a video game character sexy. (Dead or Alive, anyone?)

3) Can a character cross those lines without losing integrity or become an element of hypocrisy?
Eh, it's hard for me to say. I guess it all depends on the characters development to mindless vixen ratio. But in the end it's going to take away alot of credibility. At the moment, the most you're going to see from a video game character is a two piece swim suit. From there on, it degrades rapidly in my opinion.
2) Does this give creedance to people who draw porn of game characters?
Yes and no, I'm going to guess somewhere between the number of Halle Berry illustrations and the number of the ones of Minerva mink. (Oh god, I can't believe I typed that name.) Seeing as video game graphics have gotten far better, but they're still cartoonish. Right now, video game graphics don't get much better than this. Which is still a bit cartoony, but very life-like.

In the end, I can't really see myself getting off to a video game character. :?

What? No Mithra?

(Hey, I may be out of furrydumb, but I still like looking at the occasional nekkid catgirl.)

Whoa. Kitty got back.

You know, I really don't see the issue here. I've seen plenty of video game hentai, why not have it in Playboy? I mean, for Soul Calibur, they even programmed Ivy with bounciness, and everybody else with easily stared-up skirts. It's like they were just begging to have their characters turned into porn.

Heh, I hate that bitch. :x

Really? I never really noticed while playing. I guess I was too busy trying to kill 'em to notice. I do know that in Tekken 4 that Ling's skirt comes up quite often. Guess they're giving horny guys an extra incentive to play. That, or attempting to make it as lifelike as possible. Hmm. :?

And yes, the mithra is nice. I'mNotAFurry.NotAFurryNotAfurryNotAFurryNotAFurry...

I don't really find the whole thing surprising, shocking, or problematic.

First off, as graphics get better, DoA Volleyball titilation is a reasonable step away from the likes of Jessica Rabbit.

Second, between cartoon and digital women, we're talking about an idealized representation (or, socially idealized) of women. DoA Volleyball modeles rendered nude isn't a hell of a lot different from photographing some woman and airbrushing the hell out of her. A picture of BloodRayne or Mai Shiranui topless isn't much different from a Boris Vallejo or Olivia print of some nude woman in a fantasy setting. The only real difference is the character is a little less anonymous, since there's a story and all related to them. But, whether it's Kurumi nude or an anonymous big-titted fairy drawn by Frank Frazetta, they're no less fictitious. And this is only really a new idea in America. Japanese doujinshi and date/hentai games have been doing this for ages.

Finally, fictitous characters from games and anime may have a certain sex appeal because of characteristics they embody. Be it Lara Croft or Steel Angel Kurumi or She Hulk, these cartoon or game characters fanboys sport a boner over all have very similar attributes... strong, independent, kicking ass and taking names, but an underbelly of vulnerability attributed to the fairer sex. This is the kind of woman a fanboy's wet dream is made of. Ironically, it's also the kind of woman that, in real life, a fanboy would be hard-pressed to get the time of day from.

All in all, we're really just talking about taking an ideal of womanhood and putting a name, face, and tits on it, and guys have been jacking off to that for ages.

I don't find it to be a big deal.

It looks like a natural development of the electronic age.
