Someone posted this question on the SoCal furry list, and here's a reply, from Kurt Miller..

did you find furry?

I walked into the Furry Party, and there it was.
Why do I feel like I'm attending a meeting of a Twelve Step Group for
Furry Fans?
"Hi there. My name is Sam Penninpaw... and I'm a Furry."

All joking aside, I became involved in Furry Fandom back in the early
80's through Mark Merlino, whom I met through the early meetings of
CFO Orange.
I've been interested in funny animal characters and anthropomorphics
ever since childhood, when I watched classic Warner Brothers cartoons
and Kimba the White Lion on television. After meeting our favorite
Sable, I was introduced to the artwork of Eric Schwartz (who is my
favorite furry artist), Steve Martin, and Ken Sample. A few years
later, I joined the staff of Confurence as their Gaming Chairperson
and from there became involved with Califur zero and the crowd of
deranged Furries at Rick's Cafe Terrestrienne.
My furry alter-ego is Sam Penninpaw, a grumpy California Grizzly Bear
who walks around wearing a cowboy hat, a duster, and old-fashioned
western clothing and carrying a very large wooden mallet.
Picture a cross between Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, and W.C. Fields,
and you have a good idea of what Sam is like.
Sam woke up from hibernation a while back to discover that he's the
only member of his species, as Sam has been in hibernation over 150
years. Sam is lonely, confused, grumpy, and sexually frustrated... so
you can see why Sam is NOT in a good mood.
A word of advice: NEVER wake him up when Sam is hibernating... and do
not touch his alarm clock.
So what is YOUR story?

Kurt Miller

"Who put orange juice in my orange juice??"
--W.C. Fields

Long winded, and pointless, as usual, though he does mention working at ConFlatuance, and going to CaliFur. He's one of the main reasions that I tend to avoid going to any local furry events that are posted, can't get within 10 feet of the man without saying soming nasty about him.

Dumpster diving. Er, wait, this wasn't a query as to our fallings into the fandom. I've only heard of this Krut by proxy, and was probably another IceCat rant.

Me? Roommates. I had no idea, conception, or care. Coming from the hardened EFNet #unix (We're l33t), it took all of my effort not to just bitchslap them. I eventually broke down and created a character so I could play with MuckForth. Then I got bored and found it was useful for typefucking.

Yay, me.

Ditto. Being bored and having nothing better to do, I googled a bit... Kurt Miller is a common name of course, but the only furry-seeming one I could find is mentioned as a "supporter" on this "non-aligned furs" site (seemingly some Burned Fur-era intarweb relic) and also on this "Furry Peace and Love" site which seems even relic-ier. And both sites... are boring.

Oh yeah, Google also delivered this link, which includes this bit:
I like furry animals. and sex too. and sex with furry animals.
I like to piss people off.
I have several aliases as I have Multiple-Personality-Syndrome. MC is my favourite, but sometimes I like to be Kurt Miller.

Meh. IceCat, who's Kurt Miller?

I bumped into this whole fandumb years ago in the late ninties. Basically, I was running a few searches regarding starfox for my little brother. I found numerous websites regarding, tips, faq's and fan sites with fanart and fanfiction. Well, on one site, I saw a link refering to a"furry ring", I asked myself, "What the heck is this?" and clicked on it.

I had to cut my right index finger off for clicking that link, but I can still feel the pollution creeping slowly in me.

Well, I've never actually been part of the furry fandom (feels a little awkward sometimes, since most people here seem to have been/are), but I ran into it at SomethingAwful. I don't remember being hugely grossed out by what they were showing, more like really, really confused. Then again, I never clicked on any links... ;)

Google, provider of all things Godly and Hellish, I was searching for video game sprite-sheets to help a friend make our own video game. I stumbled upon Thorn Wolf's VCL archive, thank god she's sane or I would have ended up an SAGoon. From there I started liking her art, and clicked over to the recent art page, then began the slow process of learning about all the politics and 'culture' that is 'furry.' This was about a year ago, but I am by no means a 'noob' to the fandumb.

I really don't rembmer how I found it. I know I first got 'net access back in early '99, and I know that by the end of the year I'd learned to look for furry stuff, but I don't rember what started it.

Hell, back then most of the time I spent online was hanging around either at the PC Accellerator site or on the old Stargate SG-1 site that Showtime had going. How the hell that could've ever lead to furry, I really can't explain.

During a bout of atrocity tourism, the subject of furry sites came up. I was relatively clueless to the whole thing, and asked "Dude, isn't it just, you know, cartoons and shit?"
The following step by step instructions were given to me:
1: Go to the portal of evil.
2: Enter "furry" into the keyword search.
3: Prepare thyself.

A couple of years later, I find myself here. Though the initial "wtf" factor has worn off, there's still a certain charm in sitting back and watching the flamewars. And occasionally something new comes out of left field that brings back that good old "jesus christ, what the hell is that?" feeling.

My girlfriend's into it. I started following SA and POE back in the day to annoy her. Because annoying her is fun. Now I'm here.

And I like cartoons, so that might have something to do with it.

It's amazing how quickly furries' descriptions of their fursonas make me want to punch them. A bear in a cowboy hat with a mallet, golly, don't mess with him. What an asstard.

For myself, I stepped in furry several years before t3h intarw3b. I was looking around at a local comic shop and saw an issue of Amazing Comics.. or Amazing Heroes.. I dunno which... that featuref funny animals on the cover. I forget which ones were on there except for Erma Felna at the forefront. So, I picked it up and read the article. The animal characters appealed to me, so I got into buying Albedo. During one summer road trip to Alaska, whenever we'd stop in a town, I'd try and find a comics shop to raid for anime stuff and all (very limited at the time). Over that summer, I acquired the full run of the first Xanadu.

Once the web came into being, I got into some furry chat stuff and eventually found out about FurryMUCK.... did some playing on there. Not much else noteworthy.

My furry alter-ego is Sam Penninpaw, a grumpy California Grizzly Bear who walks around wearing a cowboy hat, a duster, and old-fashioned western clothing and carrying a very large wooden mallet.

Not only can furries not dress themselves RL, I've noticed their online fashion sense is just as deplorable, if not worse.

Picture a cross between Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, and W.C. Fields, and you have a good idea of what Sam is like.

Why do furries always fancy their alter egos to be so witty and erudite?

Sam woke up from hibernation a while back to discover that he's the only member of his species, as Sam has been in hibernation over 150
years. Sam is lonely, confused, grumpy, and sexually frustrated... so you can see why Sam is NOT in a good mood.

A sexually frustrated furry.... now there's something you don't see every day.

How did I find furry? Gone bad before cooking, overcooked when it was finally done, and then allowed to go bad in the styrofoam doggie carton as leftovers. It's stinking up the refrigerator and the refrigerator needs to be replaced anyway. I say chain the door closed for safety and put it to the road.

I had to think long and hard. I can't pinpoint it exactly. When I was little I remember the first time the Animalympics came on. Me and my freinds were obsessed at the time. I was somewhere around 6 or so then.
I don't really qualify that as furry though. I think the moment was around 1992 or so when I was lost in Boulder Colorado and wandered into a comic store and saw one of the four part run of Gold Digger before it went into it's full blown series. Found some Mangazines, bought some books from AP, and saw a pic by Tygger and got an idea. A woman I was pining over was in training to be a professional fighter. At the time kickboxing. I was going to create a gimmick and hired Tygger to draw Tanya as a kickboxing Tigress. Tygger sent me a "catalogue" of prints of almost nothing but porn... but... I kept going. Three years later she showed me the other dark side of the fandom. Artists who go nuclear with a hair trigger. But... being the glutton for punishment I hung around, and still sort of do. I have too many freinds involved in furry to totally leave it.

Sounds like an episode of Cowboy Bebop. Now we just need a spandex wearing spacecase girl named Ed to eat the somehow living contents of the fridge thinking it's pudding.

Several years before the internet boom, in a comic store, in an issue of Furrlough. there was an ad for confurence and i realized there were actually a group of people who like animal cartoons. I really liked disney and such, so i found out more about furries. It so happened one of my desire was to see something like a cartoon animal disney cartoon, but done seriously. Furries seemed like they were all about that kinda stuff. Anime had already shown me that cartoons could be taken seriously, so I wanted to see a serious western-style animal cartoon. since that wasn't happening as far as i could see, furries comics were the closest thing i could find.

Seemed like a good idea at the time. Didn't know the group as a whole would suddenly start actually ACTING like animals several years later. I wasn't interested in the animals, i just wanted to see seriously done cartoon characters!

Me?

I'm just not really a fur in the classic sense of the word. Hell, I shouldn't even have the right to call myself a fur. I have drawn a couple of rather nice, somewhat cute drawings of Anthro Mice getting into various forms of real-life trouble, or just simply to try something different.

After visiting a group of cartoonists at a local convention who also like drawing anthromorphic characters, I eventually decided that I was indded one of these new fangled "furries" that have been mucking (pun intended) about.

That was untill I discovered how much of a scarlet letter calling yourself a fur truely is.

I've never looked back since, and come here to realize there's still sanity in the world.

I've roleplayed as Anthromorphic characters, and occasionally drew them, but that's pretty much the extent of my exposure to t3h phur.

I asked someone what the hell it was and they showed me. I was pretty grossed out. Then I saw that auction site and there was a painting of a furry cock going into a furry ass going for 200 bucks. I said "I could do that."

During my Freshmen year in college, and my first exposure to the internet and computers (since I didn't have one then) I decided to use this new thing called Webcrawler which supposedly could find anything on the net. I decided one day if I could find some art that was similar to what I was already drawing and the type of comics I liked to buy. I literally tried to think of the most generic term I could think of in order to do the search (not knowing the world anthropmorphic back then) I typed in furry, hey, it was a physical description.

Well, wasn't I suprised to find I'd gotten thousands of hits and discovered the then, what, Yiffco Image Gallery and Squeeky Clean Art soemthing something. I then found the comic Katmandu in a local comic shop and bought it and found out there was a convention (didn't know they had them then) for it in Cleveland which was only 1 1/2 hours away from me (Conference East 2 I think back in 96). I talked my mother and aunt to drive me there for I think either a night or one day. Heh, we saw some suiters and stuff and my mom would make comment about them. I think that's when I saw some deer suit with like...I don't know, some kind of outfit on (the last time I ever saw anything that extreme at a con btw).

The main point of going to the con though was to meet Darrel Benvenuto who was head of Vision Comics at the time and who wanted to talk to me and see some work to get me a chance to do comics, which was my love and dream.

The second con I went to was Albany Anthrocon 97 and I went with my grandmother who had fun while there. Shrug.

In truth? Not for years. It's been sold to InfoSpace, who also usurped MetaCrawler. It was the best, them metacrawler, which searched other search engines were the best... then, of course, Google.

Welcome to the last 10 years of the internet.

Well, it's still around, though they haven't an engine of their own anymore. They still feature the cute spider symbol... however, I got this old logo from www.archive.org , a real gold mine for old farts who miss the early Internet's days... Like, uhm, myself.

I also remember when Lycos was my Internet search of choice. Back by then, they boldly announced they had ALMOST A MILLION of webpages on their database. And when they reached the million we all went all "whoa!" They say theyve got over 50 millions by now. :)

I remember that from back when I was on AOL, early ninties. I think it was thier built in search engine?

At the time when I was first using it, the 'web' was much smaller. Didnt use it that much.

To a young lad coming of age, Cheethara and Cleo there were pretty much what sucked me in. I always had Cleo pegged for a complete slut... and for a kid in middle school, tail or not.. that was enough.

Miss Bianca of The Rescuers was my first non-human character infatuation but never more than an intrigue. Not like I ever fell in love with any characters.

Right now I find it plain boring, and as the most inane source of entertainment there is, as soon as something more important or engaging comes along it falls out of my interest.

But I've had crushes on quite a few female anthro characters as a kid, though what that means to me as an adult, how I stumbled upon the 'fandom' and why two years later I'm still posting to a furry forum could probably fill a small essay. But whatever it means, it doesn't mean furry, and aside from playing the role of a furry on forums like CYD, VCL and POE I've never been one and never will.

I will say right now I've always loved Cleo and would marry her if she were real  Yes I would.

I'm not a furry, and never was a furry, and never will be a furry. What got me interested in them was SA. The first time they linked to a furry site with something like "Look at this crazy furry ha ha what a fag", back when doing that wasn't frowned upon, I found myself wondering what one is.

10 minutes later, I was screaming "FUCKING FURRIIIIEEESSSS" because what I saw was so indescribably horrifying.

They were toying with the innocence of the poor dear characters I grew up with. Fifi and Babs, Mrs. Brisby, a multitude of others. Making them do horrible things. OH GOD THE RAGE

Well, my curiosity (and rage) got the best of me and I started learning more about them (their tastes, their hygene, their politics, their issues, etc). Not until this one thread where a shitload of us invaded the livejournal of some egotistical furry who knew karate or something did I find more.

In that very thread, our robust and fatherly moderator COMPUTOLIO linked to an article here on CYD about some guy "marrying" Minerva Mink, and an ex-warner artist crashing the party. This made me laugh with such a satisfaction that I hadn't experienced since that one time I shut a certain annoying someone (a brother) up by accidentally shoving their face into a mud puddle.

Needless to say, I started reading a little more on this delightful trove of horror, CYD, and I guess that brings me here today. Yep, pretty much my only involvement in furry was in anti-furry groups. I'm somewhat proud of that fact, too.

I couldn't marry Cleo if I wanted to..... not unless her dowry was a lifetime supply of Claritin D.

Besides... who could stand an anthro feline. Cats are bitchy enough as it is, let alone evolving to a form having PMS.

ACHOOO!

I know exactly what you mean there, it happened to me.

I have seen people make requests for something far scarier than Tiny Toons porn...... Peggy Hill porn.

Let me repeat that to chisel through your disbelief.... Peggy-fucking-Hill-porn. I will at least acknowledge that Lola Bunny and Fifi la Fume have a certain sexuality to them, even if they are cartoon animals. But Peggy Hill? I'm surprised someone had the balls to admit they wanted to see that. That's like saying, "Hey, can anyone draw me a picture of my 50-year-old Aunt Beatrice laying back on the quilt she knitted me for my 12th birthday and spreading her legs? Oh, and make it look really crappy... like that guy who draws Beavis and Butthead."

Thankfully, I have not seen such horrors.. only the requests for them. I will look at 1,000 Doug Winger herm pictures before I ever set eyes upon Peggy Hill porn

I read that, but it hasn't sunk in yet. Surely I'll be banging my head against my desk chanting mantras then have an aneurysm in about 2 minutes.

My experience exactly. I've never been part of the fandom, I've just found way too much fucked up shit on the net and I didn't even actively look for it. By now, it's become atrocity tourism, but ye gods, I remember when I first came across Wolfie's "furry art" by clicking an innocent-looking link... sure, there was a warning of adult content, but I had no idea it could translate into things like this... I stared in shock, muttered "no, no, no!!!"... previously I had no idea such foul things existed.

(BTW links obviously NSFW)

I've gotten in the habit of hovevering the pointer over the link to look at the file name. After seeing "emasculatedbw.jpg" listed, I know I don't want to click it.

Would you believe the oddest request I've ever gotten was someone asking me to draw a female version of Godzilla. I think I'm either very fortunate to not have rep for pron or spooge, or people don't think I can do it, which isn't a bad thing either.

Hey, draw me and Artica nekkid? Doin' it. Yeaaaah!

What do you mean that's someone else - you're black, he's black! Right?! Goddammit. More than one black furry artist? What is the world coming to?

All jokes aside... I have nothing to add here. My favorite 'rumour'/'request' has to be "the crowbar". That was actually pretty well executed.

You know, nobody's ever asked me to actually draw her doing it. Now other people maybe, but never me. It's odd really. Others get the weird request for my characters but never me.

The Erma Felna Crowbar? :D

I laughed my ass off about that when I was looking up lots of historical type stuff about Furry fandom a little over a year ago.

its is a good fandom legend or rumor whatever.

If we're talking about the same thing:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22erma+felna%22+crowbar&hl=en&lr=&group=alt.fan.furry.*&c2coff=1&safe=off&selm=doug-2D3EB5.11074322072000%40news.fastpoint.net&rnum=5

Theres like 10 variations of this story.. its old. And I can't find the particular thread Im looking for. But you get the idea

Some fanboy walked up and asked Steve Gallacci "can you draw Erma Felna.... uhhh ...heh heh heh .. nakeed.... with a crowbar"

That's the one. However, I find it quite funny that you found a Doug Winger USENET post to link to, regarding "inappropriate requests".

I find if I replace 'crowbar' with 'jagged piece of red-hot metal' this little story is so much more interesting and less of a let down. :|

true dat

Well, its a lot of context... it was Gallacci, it was Erma Felna, and it was from a time when that sort of thing was funny as hell rather than 'run of the mill' or 'SFW?', I guess.

I wasn't around for it, not even close, but the way I personally got into furry fandom - the context was there for me.

There's an old thread on alt.fan.furry about it, too, with a post from Gallacci:
The origin of the whole thing was in the form of a performance joke, either by Steve Martin or Jimmy the Groat, in which he was imitating a shy and increasingly twisted fan who wanted a picture of Erma - naked - with a crowbar. It was silly. And gave rise to all kinds of variations of the idea. I've done any number of permutations of the theme, including a characature of myself, nude, drawing with a crowbar, a picture of Erma, and many others, all using the words but never delivering on the desired image.

I think I could have happily lived the rest of my life not knowing that there were people out there that got off on Peggy Hill porn of all things. Now that I know,my faith in humanity has been lowered that much more.
Anyway I found Furry by typing Therianthropy into a search engine when I first got internet access. The fandom appealed to me and I spent a bit of time in Furry chat rooms and on ALF,but soon enough I started to discover the seedier aspects of the fandom. After spending about eight hours driving the porcelain bus, trying to purge my mind of the newly discovered horrors,I ran like hell.
I now watch with morbid curiosity.

I found furry by randomly clicking on a link to Fernblossom, a non-yiff site, and similar sites, noticing that some people enjoyed drawing funny animal characters. How cute, I thought, logged it in the back of my mind, and promptly forgot about it.

Few months later, I attended my first anime con, and sat in artist's alley for a while drawing commissions. A group of very strange (read: unbelievably ugly and gender-confused and wearing ears and tails) people came in, sat down at the tables opposite me, and started putting together basically what amounted to a dealer's booth in artist's alley. The display slowly spread and spread until it took up most of artist's alley. After a while, curiosity got the better of me, and I walked over to see what they had on the table.

Ye gods. And this was an ALL AGES anime convention.

Not long after that, I discovered the true meaning of furry on PoE and Something Awful. Just when I think I've seen it all, something new and horrifying crops up to sear my already-scarred retinas one more time. I watch the furries from a distance and with a sense of revolted fascination, wondering what they'll top themselves with next, and giggling when they make fools of themselves. Which, of course, is often.

I'm definitely not a furry. I've drawn maybe three or four anthro characters, usually in mocking; I'm sure I could make money at it if I got serious or something, but I have no desire to degrade myself like that. I have drawn a grand total of ONE anthro character in a commission but it was non-yiffy. By and large, I prefer to stick to good old fashioned Western style comic things.

I don't care much for drawing anime characters either. That was something else I learned at that convention. Not my cup of tea.

You meant "non-erotic", right? Never let them suck you into using their terminology, it'll eat away your brain that way.
