He's supposed to be some sort of super-genius and know-it-all when it comes to animation and comic books.

In fact, he's published several books and provided audio commentary on several DVDs to this effect.

And from my personal experiences with him, he seems a fairly nice and ordinary guy.

So what does he hang around t3h phurraes for?

I don't know Fred Patten personally, but I respect him because he knows quality work. When I seen he was the head editor of that furry short fiction collection "Best in Show". That was seriously why I bought it.

If furry fandom had more guys like Fred Patten there probably wouldnt be half the problem with it that there is today (or at least the fucked up stuff would be way more dismissable). He does he quality work. He went thru the trouble of getting Best in Show an ISBN # - that means bookstores can carry it , it can be in Libraries etc. He got Ursula Vernon to do the cover artwork. Its just all around a professional publication of fan works.

Hes been around forever so thats probably why he doesn't leave. Which is cool either way. He does what he wants to do and thats the end of it.

I did know him personally. He introduced me to the C/FO many years ago, but i don't communicate with him or anyone from that area of the US at all these days, seeing as how i've run away from furry a while ago and live on the opposite coast. But I really respect him, he helped me out as best he could when I met him, in so many ways, and he really didn't have to do all the shit he did for me. He introduced me to all sorts of animation and cartoon people and all other sorts, drove me around when I didn't have a car.. Now that I think about it, I suddenly feel like I never really thanked him properly for everything he did. But take my word, Fred's nothing but good people.

Fred likes cartoons, end of story. Anime, furry, whatever. He's cool like that. A true scholar knows it all, man. He was there when furry and anime first started, even instrumental in the formation of both way way back when none of this crazy shit was going on. So you can't figure he could possibly have predicted how the fandom would end up. Also remember there is still a very large group of furries that are still old school hardcore art/zine/toon fans and I think he's just still hanging around all those good ol' boys of furry. Who knows what his opinion on the stranger furries are and what he thinks about furry's change, but something tells me he doesn't really care either way. He's in it for the comics and cartoons and there's no doubt from anyone that's where his passion is.

What DVDs has he commentary on? I'd like to check those out.

He went thru the trouble of getting Best in Show an ISBN #

From what I can understand, any schmoe can get an isbn, it is not difficult, just a website application away. Although it does cost you because they must be bought in bulks of 10. A formerly popular furry artist who has since moved on to more respectable comics told me this just a few days ago at a convention.

Yes, he's a pretty decent guy that knows his comics. I was impressed when I found out he's a regular contributor to the Comics Buyers Guild as well as some other publicatons that have nothing to do with furry.

From Viron's post, he sounds like a pretty standup guy.

That's good enough for me.
