This must be a joke, since I haven't heard anything about it. But since I live in Illinois, why the hell would I care?

Plus, they say plague is "a disease carried by rodents and insects", when plague is clearly defined as "a widespread affliction or calamity".

What kind of plague is it? Just calling it "plague" is like saying "things DIED TODAY OMG". This is like the killer bees, anthrax, SARS, and the rest of them.

Or SIDS -Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, which is what they call it when a baby just up and dies and they can't determine what caused it. Maybe years from now medical science will find some actual reason for it, but for now it seems a bit convenient to take "I don't know what killed this baby" and ascribe it as being a known affliction.

There was story I saw years ago on one of the daytime talk shows about a guy who molested hundreds of young boys and kept getting away with it, and how his cause of death was listed as "heart failure". The mother of one of his victims was on there saying she suspected he might have had AIDs and infected some of the young boys, and that the coroners weren't disclosing it for privacy reasons. She made the observation that heart failure is how you die, not what you die from.

and boy doesn't this post sound really creepy with my current sig

Not "plague" but "the plague" - like Quantum Coyote sez above. This disease actually pops up regularly in the US.

Because obviously you'd know EVERYTHING that has to do with Colorado squirrels, and, like, the media and Center for Disease Control must be having a big ole laugh at the public expense. Jesus.

Like other people have said, plague is nothing unusual in the US. We've got plague squirrels in the hills of San Francisco, and I'm pretty sure you can find them in most states. For some reason, though, plague seems to be an especiallybig problem in New Mexico. Half the time you hear about plague outbreaks in any other state it turns out it came from some New Mexican tourist. Odd, that.

Plus, they say plague is "a disease carried by rodents and insects", when plague is clearly defined as "a widespread affliction or calamity".

I am shocked and apalled that so many people don't know what the plague is. Didn't you take any history classes? You know, bubonic plague and all that?

I know what plague is. The article just seems worded strangely. They say that the plague is a disease instead of plague is caused by a disease. But I just might be reading it incorrectly.

There IS more than one type of plague:
http://www.cchd.org/php/plague.htm

"Septicemic and pneumonic plagues are more often fatal than bubonic because they are harder to recognize. Fortunately, these types of plague are less common."

They all have one source, Yersinia pestis, but that does not mean they're all called the same thing. I'm unaware if squirrels have different types of plague, but it's pretty probable.

Just now I noticed the rest of this article and had to laugh. "HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM TEH PLAGUE OMG TERRERISTS".

It's the same organism, Yersinia Pestis is the the genus and species. The different forms of plague are caused by different means of infection. Anthrax is similar this way. But yes, there are most likely different strains of varying potency. You get boubonic plague from flees that have fed on Yersinia Pestis rodents. Its a bad desease, you can die, but even worse, when you have it you can start to spread spread the bacteria through the air via aerosols from your lungs, this causes pneumonic plague which spreads very easily and is very fatal. The mildest form would be a skin infection.

or so a little birdie told me

Well, yes. The article says "a tree squirrel has tested positive for the plague in the Colorado Springs area." A plague is any highly infectious, usually fatal, epidemic disease, while the plague is a specific highly fatal infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia (syn. Pasturella) pestis, transmitted primarily by the bite of a rat flea, and occurs in bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic forms. But we're getting pedantic, aren't we? Let's keep it furry, folks.

Oh, come on. You honestly read that article and thought "Well, gosh, it says plague IS a disease instead of plague IS CAUSED BY a disease. Therefore, I have no idea what disease it's refering to, because, gosh, it sure couldn't be refering to, I don't know, plague."

I think most people think of the disease itself as well as the disease-causing pathogen as being called "plague," whether or not that's technically, scientifically correct, and you're just picking nits so you don't have to admit you made a mistake.

Also, I think someone else has already mentioned that bubonic and pneumonic plague are both variations on the same disease. But I'll mention it to, because I want to feel special.

It's worse than that. Don't you see? One of those zoophile furries is responsible for inflicting AIDS on humanity! Bastards!

Srry, I have a thing for epidemiology, in the psychological too, thats one reason furries interest me: all the pathology.

I MADE A MISTAKE. There. I admitted it. I didn't think about what I was reading, so I made a mistake. I'm sorry for making a mistake. I should have studied the article more. But you don't have to jump down my fucking throat about it.
