I went to GenCon SoCal this past weekend.

With me, I brought 100 stickers which I designed and printed myself.

These stickers featured an iconic male (as seen in men's room signs and the like) slightly modified to appear to have cat-like ears and a tail and a rodent-like muzzle, superimposed a red, slashed circle (as seen in "No Smoking" signs, etc.) with the text "NO FURRIES!" printed beneath in bold black type.

I planned to distribute them freely at the "GenCon SoCal" gaming convention and exposition, but only to those who SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED them after seeing the copy I so proudly wore upon my attendance badge.

I am pleased to say that I was able to give away all 86 which survived the final printing process.

I am further pleased to say that the one I wore invoked an odd few dirty looks from a number of folically-opulent gravy-beasts (of both the male and female persuasion) who never failed to accompany their disdainful gazes with that tried and true piece of rhetoric, "What did WE ever do to YOU?"

To which I would respond, "It's not so much what you did to ME... It's what you did to the movies, books and cartoons that I so love."

After which they would waddle away (typically) flummoxed.

Eh, I dunno man, that shits been done to death. There were anti-furry fliers in the early 80s fur crying out loud! That in combination with the point Im at. Where, a prank, a joke, a spoof, or whatever should be intricate, some scale to it. Or even more importantly it should make some type of statement. to me, its funnier if say - A furry (or even someone just acting the part) set themselves up, then turned it around on whoever takes the bait. Its so incredibly rare, yet so ripe to be done. Its all about whos more predictable, it seems.

Just as a sidenote, the whole 'furry ruined such and such for me' thing I never really understood. I never personalized any of that. Even years ago Id run across some porn of a cartoon that I really liked and it would be more along the lines of "wow... I like that character too... but not that way!!" or "Gee, thats a really weird fixation to develop, considering..." rather than some sort of righteous indignation or that person's own ..issues imposing themselves on what I like. As in, I see some porno fanfic of something, that doesnt ruin the original for me at all - its that guy thats fucked up. And more often than not, its funny as hell that somebody is that fucked up. I dont even do the whole atrocity tourism thing, some things I like just tend to be mired in it sometimes. :)

but hey, thats just me.
Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Indeed, I'm the same way - so people draw TaleSpin and Darkwing Duck porn - who cares? My childhood isn't being "ruined" because of that, my childhood has been over for 15 years already.

Mostly I only find it laughable when "professional" people draw such porn and try to hide their identity poorly in the process of drawing it then bitch if someone violates THEIR copyrights. *cough cough EWS cough*

They were probably drawing it back when those shows were on the air, just the internet makes it an awful lot easier to distribute it, since there was no internet (to speak of) back then.

Admittedly, though, it's amusing to weed out stereotypes such as "the big fat hairy unshowered oaf" furry with such stickers.

Hell, I woulda taken one of those stcikers. Though I feel you missed an opportunity for a jab at the fandom's love of dick-nippled herm-taurs.

Oh, well, the whole "What did we do/You ruined this" thing I just mention as an example of how to fight dumb rhetoric with clever rhetoric, not a summary of the purpose behind "Project: GenCon".

Though, I guess you do have a point in that I tend to internalize it a bit. But give me a break, these things are supposed to be CHILDREN'S ENTERTAINMENT, dammit!

No, my main purpose for passing these out was to prove, I guess to myself mostly, that there was, indeed, a strong anti-furry sentiment out there in the "geek" world. Enough to justify what it is we do here at CYD.

That, and, as I would often say to a smile to the recipients of my stickers "Oh, no need to thank me. Furthering the cause of blind hatred and intolerance is all part of what I do." :D
