Somebody pointed out on another thread that Yerf has had a catastrophic HD failure, so terrible that it's going to force the admins to ask for $pecialized help to recover both the scripts and the artwork stored on the doomed HD.

I'm a bit surprised at some things I've noticed while watching the events.

First, I find -quite- strange to find the admins didn't make backup copies of the site and its contents. If they had kept a safe copy of the code on a side and the artwork on the other side (and backup material is quite cheap nowadays), all they had to do was simply to replace the failed HD by a newer unit, put the contents and, there. Now, they're facing the consequences of their lack of prevision as they find themselves with the HD out of order and with no money to recover the data.

Second, I'm not pretty sure about it, but I perceive the repercussion of Yerf's demise is quite mild on the furry fandom, since, well, I was totally unaware of it until it was pointed out here on CYD, and I haven't heard or read about it elsewhere, except on Yerf's journal. On the other side, I could perceive it that way because I'm drifting away from the fandom, so my view about what's going on in the fandom is quite diminished.

I know feelings are untransferrable and everything, but, if I was the site's owner, I'd just leave the damaged HD in a corner and call it a day. While in the past Yerf had a prominent place among furry galleries, its glory moment has passed. Most, if not all the art you could find there can be easily found on other galleries around, like VCL or Deviantart, and most people I've asked told me they didn't check Yerf anymore.

I'd say this is the perfect moment to give Yerf the chance of a decent death.

Yeah, I agree.

Yerf should just die in relitive peace. Sure, there was some awesome work on there, however I've noticed on the recent uploads, you know, since they lowered the standards for applications. These artists do three really GOOD works, then they get in and are able to upload ALL of their crappy shit. I enjoyed Yerf until the pages were flooded with that stuff, that's when I stopped looking.

I hung out there mostly for the critique board, yerf was one of the few places I could get a decent critique, I'm hoping it comes back if only for that.

I like Yerf because it's one of the few furry galleries NOT filled to the brim with piss-poor quality herm spooge blood scat pics.

I pray it comes back for that reason.

Yerf is (was) by now mainly a by-artists-for-artists site. I suspect that the reason is that Yerf's art standards are much higher than the standards of most of its non-artist viewers (i.e. furry fans used to VCL). Plus, there's no porn.

The application guidelines are also very famous for leading to a lot of disgruntled artists, especially with the long forced waits after rejection. (For those who don't know, artists who are rejected or make mistakes on their applications are forced to wait 2-6 months before they can reapply.) There are "anti-yerf" communities and such on LJ.

The thing is, Yerf is hardly "furry". It's quite simply anthropomorphic artwork, and it has very little connection with furry fandom. Real furries look elsewhere for the reason Stoneth and Xarai mention: Yerf doesn't give them what they want: porn, preferably weird fetish porn. Of the anthro-/furry-related collective art sites out there, Yerf is the best IMHO and it would be just slightly sad to see it go away.
