Another furry archive bites the dust. This time, it's the turn of ArtVark, the 'clean' archive that appeared shortly after Yerf's demise:

http://artvark.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1769

Personally, I regret it because it was one of the few places where you could find acceptable, non-spoogey furry stuff... and because I had applied to enter PRECISELY now. Dammit.

Well ... fuck.

The last little glimmer of light in the big clean furry art archive's torches has been exstinquished. Pity too, because I was kind of hoping that ArtVark could have been the next Yerf. For now the gallery is still up, but really.

Well this certainly seems like something to add to the t-shirt idea along with Chan Plz's short life.

BTW, Dook is what Artvark was originally going to be called, but they changed the name because it sounded too much like something else (poop) and not many people would get the reference that "dook" is a sound that ferrets make. The more updated community for it is "artvarkbootcamp".

Honestly?

I knew a few weeks back that Artvark was going. One of the ex-founders is a friend of mine, and she explained to me the whole drama of Tarah_fae or whatever her name is. Apparantly she alienated everyone else, and only had the 'it's all about me' attitude, thus forcing most of the helpers to quit.

Lots of drama.

Aaalso, check out the discussion at the livejournal. Tarah's all like WAAH NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE OVER and then everyone's like 'YOU NEVER ASKED!!'

Tarah Fae is a gigantic cunt. The people providing the site's bandwidth are saints, and I question why they put up with her, but I trust their judgement even if I wouldn't shed tears if Tarah fell into a volcano tomorrow.

The reason ArtVark is dying isn't bandwidth or anything else. It's the exact reason I can't stand Tarah so much - she's a control freak. She wants absolute power over everything, but is stuck in bumfuck South Africa and lacks the time or bandwidth to run things. And because she is so desperate to retain control over the community, despite the fact that the community is self-sustaining and has tons of people who would happily take over the reins, she refuses to give the site to anyone else to run. She's also, as stated above, incredibly hard to get along with. Tevildo helps out because he's a slobbering and desperate man who sucks up to the artists there for commissions.

Tarah is utterly incapable of withstanding even the most minor criticism. I remember this one time on IRC when she was spamming some art link of hers, and I told her the character's eyes were creepy and the tail was drawn in a position which was physically impossible. She freaked out and started foaming at the mouth going "WELL YOU'RE WRONG AND CLEARLY YOU CAN'T SEE BECAUSE LOOK THE CHARACTER'S CLOAK IS IN THE WAY AND IF YOU CAN'T SEE WHAT I WAS THINKING WHEN I DREW THE PICTURE THEN YOU'RE AN IDIOT AND I DON'T RECALL ASKING ANYBODY FOR CRITIQUE BLAH BLAH BAHDGFJHFHGFHBLARGFHFHJD". I honestly believe that ArtVark was started so Tarah could "have her own Yerf" where she would be worshipped as site god and wouldn't be "just another Yerfer" subject to criticism. Her artwork is half-decent but is nothing that any korean animation school drone couldn't churn out.

She and Dingo need to hook up and become life partners, they seem meant for each other. Both utterly incapable of delegating responsibility out of fear that nobody could do it as well as they can, both hell-bent on destroying communities that do the furry fandom good.

What the hell is the story with her and Fangs anyway?

I can't say I'm surprised it's going down. I remember when she and Fangs were getting ready to set it up. It was all in reaction to BS on Yerf. It's that simple. She was pissed at something and someone said to her "well, do it yourself", and she did.

It was. She just created "Yerf Lite" out of spite apparently.

Fangsie? He was Tarah's boyfriend for awhile, (Internet, most likely, since he's in England.), but I guess she dumped him and wrote an e-mail telling him all his faults.

Heh. Tarah takes the critique thing way too seriously, because she didn't only pull that crap with Fangsie.

She's nuts, plain and simple. The whole pulling AV thing is so that people still want and need her, so she can feel validated.

First post, so 'scuse me if I'm sounding lame by adding my own 2c. From my experience with both the internet and various places I have been employed with, I can figure out that too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the soup. This goes for furry art archives as well as a recent company I worked with that went under due to differences in upper management (they had multiple founders with equal say in the company). My opinion is, don't start a giant (or destined to grow large) community like this unless you are absoluetely sure you can handle it all yourself (maintenance, costs, and new direction, etc.)

THE TRUTH ABOUT ARTVARK (From somebody who "wasn't up to par"):

1. Tevildo stalked an applicant's PERSONAL LiveJournal and made sniping, trollish comments after she complained about the unfairness of AV's grading system.

2. After this artist, who was a former and long-time Yerf member was rejected from ArtVark for, among other things, not drawing enough feet in her pictures, Tarah Fae put up a list of "tips" for people applying, claiming that these were not aimed at any one person, even though they DIRECTLY addressed things that the rejected applicant had mentioned in her (once again) PERSONAL livejournal posts.

3. Seriously, the grading system was a BAD IDEA from the start. I can name a few reasons:

- You did not have to be an artist in order to be a reviewer
- Grades were based on how well the reviewers LIKED you piece/how well it fit with the "theme" rather than how skilled you were with a given medium.
- Grades were DISPLAYED on the gallery pages, but gave no real indication of how good or bad the artist was in technical terms, but rather how well the reviewers (again, mostly NOT ARTISTS THEMSELVES) liked your work when you applied.

4. The RULES... Oh God, the endless lists of RULES. Rules which were continually being revised in order to bend applicants and artists to the whim of the admins. I don't know about you guys, but I have a very short attention span. When I see a huge block of text detailling what I SHOULD and SHOULDN'T use (according to the tastes and whims of the reviewers) to apply for an art gallery, I kind of zone out...

I for one am glad to see that ArtVark folded. Yes, it COULD have been a haven for fans of clean "anthro art", but instead it turned into some kind of control-freak foot-fetish party for the biased opinions of people who were bitter at Yerf to pretend like they were better than everybody else.

I should also note that, according to my memory, Tarah Fae never even APPLIED for Yerf. Apparently she disagreed with it on principle, or something.

Kind of ironic, since she made her site even MORE difficult to get onto than Yerf was.

THE TRUTH ABOUT ARTVARK (From somebody who "wasn't up to par"):

OH BOY, INTERPERSONAL DRAMA! Get the popcorn!

1. Tevildo stalked an applicant's PERSONAL LiveJournal and made sniping, trollish comments

C'mon, I think everyone knows that, just as the Internet is for porn, Live Journal is for drama.

things that the rejected applicant had mentioned in her (once again) PERSONAL livejournal posts.

How 'personal' are remarks that any schmuck could come along and look at? Were these 'personal' entries posted publicly? You do realise that putting up a sign saying "DON'T LOOK AT THIS!" doesn't generally work, don't you?

Seriously, the grading system was a BAD IDEA from the start. I can name a few reasons:

Although curiously you fail to mention "because I was rejected".

You did not have to be an artist in order to be a reviewer

Wait. Does this mean you're one of those "you think it's bad, well LET'S SEE YOU DO BETTER!!!" dweebs?

Grades were based on how well the reviewers LIKED you piece/how well it fit with the "theme" rather than how skilled you were with a given medium.

Technical skill is great, but it's only one part of whether a piece is any good. In a way, it's the least important part: it only matters inasmuch as it helps achieve whatever idea, or emotion, or storyline, or whatever, the artist is trying to get across. Since your screen name is "comicartist42", I'll pick some examples among comic strips past and present.

Example 1: Peanuts. Although Charles Schulz was never the most technically proficient or realistic comic artist, his comic was highly successful because his work successfully got across the personalities of his characters and the stories he wanted to tell.

Example 2:
Little Nemo in Slumberland. This short-lived comic hasn't developed a following solely because of Winsor McCay's technical skill (although he undeniably had it), but because he used that skill to serve his imagination and to make the impossible seem not only possible but plausible.

Example 3:
Judge Parker. This comic has slick, realistic artwork, but you're not likely to find many genuine fans (as opposed to people who read it out of habit). This is because it's boring as dirt. No technical artistic skill can fix its being boring as dirt.

Grades were DISPLAYED on the gallery pages, but gave no real indication of how good or bad the artist was in technical terms, but rather how well the reviewers (again, mostly NOT ARTISTS THEMSELVES) liked your work when you applied.

More praying to the Great God of Technical Skill. A lot of furry artists worship this god either singly or as the Holy Trinity of Anatomy, Shading, and Detail; personally I'm rather tired of it.

4. The RULES... Oh God, the endless lists of RULES. Rules which were continually being revised in order to bend applicants and artists to the whim of the admins.

Just about every stupid little web site's rules (whether called "Acceptable Use Policy", or "Terms Of Service", or some other TLA) include a "we can change these rules any time we like, so nyaah" clause; even if they don't, you should assume they do, and that said changes will be made to suit administration, not you. If administration being arbitrary and petty is something new to you, then... well, welcome to the Internet.

I don't know about you guys, but I have a very short attention span.

I predict you'll fire back with some witty rejoinder to the effect of "tl;dr". Too bad for you.

Yes, it COULD have been a haven for fans of clean "anthro art", but instead it turned into some kind of control-freak foot-fetish party for the biased opinions of people

Exactly like Yerf, in other words?

I should also note that, according to my memory, Tarah Fae never even APPLIED for Yerf. Apparently she disagreed with it on principle, or something.

"Or something": one of the most obnoxiously vapid phrases in the modern world, along with "I could care less" and "you know what I mean".

Kind of ironic, since she made her site even MORE difficult to get onto than Yerf was.

So what if some site is difficult to get into? There are plenty of other art gallery sites sucking up bandwidth on the Net: Deviant Art, Sheezy Art, VCL, Elfwood, whatever. 'Tain't that hard to find one that suits you.

*shrugs*

I can't argue with any of what you said except for that last one. I am a pretentious and bitter psychobitch, and I've never denied it.

BUT! The fact of the matter is that I can't seem to find a gallery site that "suits me". I only applied to ArtVark AFTER they said they would allow non-anthro art. Because, frankly, I LOATHE furry art, and I just wanted another small (i.e., not DA) semi-quality controlled site to get myself a little publicity.

Of course it's all a moot point now since I go out of my way to avoid drawing "anthro" outside my comic unless it's absolutely necessary.

Dangit, I wish I had been a musician. Then none of this would ever have transpired... >_>
