If it's the same Thornwolf I've met, I don't know why you'd get the weirdo vibes. If anything Thorn is pretty normal (I know, holyshit). Hell, most normal folks in the furry fandom have rules like this.

That's a long list... comprised almost entirely of things that anyone with common sense would know already. It's slightly creepy that she actually had experiences that necessitated making such a list. Once gain, furcons seem to consist of one violation of decorum after another.

Considering Thornwolf, I'm assuming you were the one giving off the vibes?

As a wise man once said (or it might have just been Jeff Foxworthy) the saddest thing is no one would list things not to do if someone hadn't already tried or done it before.

It doesn't surprise me and only stands as a testament that a lot of people can't follow common sense. I hear the horror stories of individuals who did this or acted like this or showed up wearing only this and at times it sickens me that furry attracts so many losers. Then I remember that it makes good material for this site and I'm not so bitter.

Agreed, although I think it would make for some good LOLZ if someone would start a seperate thread with screenshots of products with this kind of moronic labeling :)

No, actually just looking back over my con photos I think it was just someone with a similar badge name.

You pretty much summed it up yourself. You normally SHOULDN'T have to do anything like this, but uh, you're dealing with furries here. Common sense? Hahahahahahahaha.

Still, I wonder if this list'll actually have any effect on her con experience.

Damn, don't even talk to me about Denny's. It was THE place to go eat at all the Anthrocons hosted at the Adams Mark. I had to take my badge off when I went in there just to get some decent service without snears and dirty looks from the waitresses, because these furry fucks were so rude and indecent it wasn't even funny. I mean, I don't give a shit if you are gay, but even level-headed straight couples do not swap spit and grope each other in ANY public area. It was the first and last time I venture outside a convention hotel to another public place where they tend to congregate.

I am thinking of ripping off this person's do's and dont's list and printing it to a shirt to wear next time, because my personal space bubble has been violated in this fashion as well. These things really ought to be put into the pamphlet as well.

I say go for it. I'd love to see the reactions of confused furries as their hearts sink and they go "NO SKRITCHIES?:("
But HA. I can almost picture your Denny's experience. How very, very sad.

Yeah. The first year at the Adams Mark (Sad to say, but I miss that place) I went to the Denny's once and walked the fuck back out. It was like 2AM or so, starved to hell and back. Myself and couple other people are ready to grab a random idiot and commit random acts of cannibalism, we are that hungry. We say screw it, go over to the Denny's. Its close, that's the ONLY reason we went. We walk over, notice a couple folks walking back and shaking their heads. We do the pleasentries bullshite as we pass, they are basically giggling as we go by. Can you tell we should have been warned? Walked into the Denny's and there is the BIG group of idiots in full furry fag gear. Leashes, hotpants, tails and ears.

We ended up driving out to a McDonald's about four miles from the hotel and NOT talking. We said nothing to each other until we got back to the hotel. Honestly, I felt sorry for that Denny's. Between the normal goth trash that shows up and the furry fag brigade that showed up for a weekend once a year, Denny's is hell.

When I was at Conifur last year, there was a Denny's near the Radisson we were at. The group went there a couple times to eat and the wait staff was really nice.

Later on we found out they didnt have any clue what was going on until someone finally told them there was a convention across the street. Since they were getting so much buisness, they sent over a free pie for the game room as a thanks. There was no massive fursuit get-together at the Denny's or people going in for spite. It was really fun.

I really think the Denny's that was near Adam's Mark got a rep because people were just being asses to the staff and they didnt want to take it. Which is a shame cause odds are the original conflict happened and it just got taken out on people next year who have no clue what is happening and likely are going to get jaded by a group who thinks they are "getting the man" and being all cool.

But dude...Houlihans was totally the place to eat. I loved that place.

Fudd Ruckers still reigns as king, or at least they would if they were still around. Some little pizza shop near the hotel of AC this past year was almost constantly full. Nice little place, but yeah, I took off anything non-human before I went in. Everyone else seemed civil too. I guess because it was greek and nobody wants to mess with greeks.

Yeah, I know what pizza place you are talking about. It was about a half-mile walk, but it was so worth it for some good old generic yummy, greasy, cheesy pizzas. And not a big hit on the wallet to boot.

By the way, who here is planning on attending the Pittsburgh location this year? The giant convention space oughtta give me plenty of breathing room devoid of smelly, bearded fatties.

Not that I would know or anything, because I was never there, of course, but I talked with one of the waiters, and the staff was rather receptive because those that went ordered well and tipped well. The waiter then described the horror story of when Sakura con was at the same hotel, where anime fanboys would take up several tables for orders of waters and one side of fries.

I felt I couldn't reach the pinnacle of cynicism without attending at least one con. But, it's too expensive to go for curiosity's sake.

Im not the type to go "omg everyone in the world likes me and wants to date me" but given previous experiences (which I was shocked at, I thought this fandom was mostly /gay/ men) I've been thoroughly creeped out by folks coming on a little too strong when I reject their advances.

-Call me Thorn/Thornwolf/Nicole/Niko. I answer to most things. Thornwolf is your best bet if shouting over a long distance to get my attention. Thorn is less formal and I prefer it in casual conversation if you prefer to go by aliases. I don't mind either way.

Wait, this question is for you con goers. Do people actually talk to each other with internet handles? Hello, I'm Darkjackal Bloodpaws who are you? Get away from me. Mind you I always tought rap names like 50 cent and Ice Cube were the epitome of stupidity also.

I always tought conbadges were there for confirming that this is indeed the person you know from internet, and it would be real name basis after that. I mean if you want to remain anonymous just leave out your last name. It also just might be me.

I feel stupid for this to never occur to me before.

Same here. I do give out my name to people that are trustworthy, but to J. Random Congoer, it's Bob, the most generic name around.

I have a rather unique first name, so it's jarring when people that I expect to call me Bob call me by my real name (But it's very effective at getting my attention). It was almost as weird as when my sister in law was talking to someone over the phone, and referred to me as Bob.

My wife calls me "stinky" as a pet name. And to me, she's "bunny butt". I guess that's true love.

Agreed. That doth rule.

The pet name I gave my wife has a long story to it, and goes back to when we were dating. She, however, doesn't call me Bob or any variant of that. Usually it's, "You goober!"

Everybody uses their handles when meeting in person, but apparently that's not unique to furry. My brother met up with a bunch of World of Warcraft nerds, and they were still all using their internet names.

I use names according to context, so that people can't cross-reference my activities unless I really want them to. I use my real name in public, online it's Monkey King, and at cons or furry sites I use my furry handle.

I don't respond to my handle IRL. I've only met a few people from online IRL, and they've usually found out my real name by the time we met.
However, once me and some online buddies bumped into a guy we all knew online who barley knew us, so we went by our handles around him. It was kind of awkward.

Fuddruckers is the best place ever for burgers. Well, expensive burgers you have to wait almost an hour for when there's no one else in line ahead of. But they have ostrich burgers which I'm sure ticks off some furries or maybe featheries to no end.

But they have ostrich burgers which I'm sure ticks off some furries or maybe featheries to no end.

Ahaha, I'd love to set up a grill at a furry con selling "fox burgers". Since most people have never had Ostrich, they'd never know the difference.

"Oh yeah, genuine fox meat. By the time the dogs are done chasing and tearing up the foxes, the meat is pretty tender. Just grind it up and voila."

Mmmm. Yiffy.
Anyways, there's a meat shop in my area that sells all kinds of bizarre meat...crocodille, rabbit, ostrich...I guess that's what I get for living out in hicksville, where, if it moves, we'll eat it.

At my old town there was a street festival where you can sometimes try some unique foods(the portabella burgers were so good...) as well as an assortment of deep-fried anything. (from oreos to twinkies even)

One of the booths was offering a "eat a bug" type of thing so I figured I'd give it a shot cause it seemed cool.

Lemme tell ya. BIGGEST rip off EVER. It was more or less a completly dried out cricket(could have been an ant really) inside a huge piece of chocolate. It was more or less like eaching a crunch bar with really bad chocolate.

There's a deli near me that sells that stuff. Crocodile tastes a little like fish and chicken.

Crickets taste kind of nutty. I can't say it's a good flavour.

We get that here in the big city, too, both in select meat shops and in restaurants. I think it's just globalization - more product choices for everyone...

I recently had crocodile at an Australian restaurant that also has kangaroo and shark on the menu - plus "normal" things like beef and chicken. Can't say the croc was very interesting - the meat didn't taste of much in itself, it was the seasoning and sauce that provided the taste - which was undeniably good.

They had shark in the local supermarket.
The product had to be taken out of the program almost imediately because of protests from environmentalists.
Totally justified since sharks are already rare enough and play an important role in the eco system.

Crocs and ostriches are farmed. So no environmental problem there.

Oh, I had fried mealworms once.
A bit like dry tofu since they tastes like what they were fried with.

I've had alligator.. and I've prepared rabbit (it looks like a long chicken)... just because something isn't a run of the mill domestic animal it doesn't mean it isn't tasty

Actually, fun part is you likely already ate shark. If you ever had scallops that didn't feel 'gritty' it may have been shark meat, since it's slightly less expensive. Real scallops are nearly impossible to de-sand, so you can feel a few particles while you eat them.

I never hoad Ostrich, but I would assume it may have actually been emu or those other similar birds... forget their name. I tried alligator at Penn's Landing Jumboliah once, it was... different.

I'd really like to try Kangaroo someday. Just to say I have.

I've never really known scallops to be gritty and I'm a chef

I may have remembered that part of the urban legend wrong, sorry. I assume there is a way to tell the difference though. And yes, sometimes it is sharkmeat. I've had gritty scallops once, on a cruise. It's not annoying at all, just adds a bit to a shellfish with an otherwise too-soft texture.

well they shouldn't be too gritty most of them should be more or less sand free.

I think if shellfish are kept in a tank (live) for 24 hours to purge the sand it should clean them out for the most part

I grew up in a little village in the countryside near lake and forest, some of my family go hunting, so venison's part of the menu at my parents' house. And if you know where to look, you can find big city meat shops and supermarkets that sell deer, rabbit, partridge, pheasant, etc, too.

What's new (at least in my experience) is that in later years some shops now also offer "exotic" meat. It's not something they regularly have in stock, and it's usually rather expensive, but it's available from time to time. There are two local supermarkets that have offered ostrich, kangaroo, some sort of buffalo and a few other things I can't remember ATM. The meat usually comes with recipes so the city slickers will know how to cook it.
