The kitten had a birth defect known as Cyclopia which affects animals and humans alike. You don't need a reason for the death. I sincerely doubt that most born with a condition that severe could survive for long as has been the case for many with this affliction (many are born braindead).

For further reading see this SMH article, this Snopes article, and this site about Cyclopia.

And if you have a particularly strong stomach, try image Googling "Cyclopia".

I'm sorry Cowgirl but you can only have one implausible pet

you must choose between a giant fearsome yet oddly heartwarming ape or a mutant kitty... take your time

Could this be a hoax? I thought that kittens kept their eyes closed because they were not fully formed at birth. This poor guy's eye is wide open and seems developed.

If not a hoax, he's probably braindead. Nature sucks ass sometimes.

According to Snopes, its not a hoax. Apparently in cases such as this the animal is born without eyelids to begin with thus why they are unclosed.

But yeah...animals born with this don't tend to stay alive very long at all.

Sonic hedgehog?

Cyclopia results from a failure of the embryo's forebrain to divide into 2 hemispheres. It can result from defective genes or from certain toxins. These seem to interrupt development by interfering with a protein called Sonic hedgehog (Shh). Severe cases of cyclopia result in stillbirth or in death within a few hours of birth.

The other picture example of Cyclopia.

Hate to mention this, knowing where the thread will no doubt end up, but when I saw the photos of hydrocephalic cats (the ones with the eyes pointing away from each other), I couldn't help but be reminded of the way Jay Naylor draws eyes.

.

Lets not bring Naylor into this, I just want to focus on how cool this cat would have been if it survived.
I tell ya, god didn't stop after creating #666.
