We've been known to mention 'round these parts the freakiness that hangs around the Sonic fandom. For some, a fandom about a game series they like. For others, a gateway into the furry fandom.

Well, I got wind of the owner of Sonic Cult, apparently the dirty old man of the sonic fansites, getting arrested. Ever-curious, I looked it up, and sure 'nuff, I found a piece on it from some Sonic news thing.

Eric Robert Gray, known as webmaster PACHUKA/Reala on Sonic-Cult.org, notorious for, among other things, his "Boob pix plz" section of the site, has been arrested in Atherton, California, on charges of sexually assaulting a 15 year old girl he met on the Internet.

According to local police, Gray met the girl on November 30th, took her to his apartment, and committed the act. Gray then drove the girl home, and told her not to say anything about the incident. Eventually, friends of the girl told police about the assault.

Gray is now being held in a local jail and could face up to four years in prison if convicted. Under California's "three strikes" law, if he has two other offenses against him, he could go to jail for life. It is rumored that Gray was once convicted of grand theft auto.

It is unclear whether the girl, whose identity is concealed due to her age, was actually raped outright by Gray.

(Note from Shmeckopolis: Someone at another site I hit during my search quoted a newspaper report on the matter, and apparently he did rape her. I snagged the newspaper spot, and quoted it below.)

While news of this broke late in December, there was confusion as to whether the identity of Gray in real life and PACHUKA on the internet matched. Several independent, anonymous sources have confirmed to tssz|news that the personalities do match. Furthermore, a former Cult co-webmaster has purportedly confirmed to avid followers of the site and its founder that Gray is PACHUKA.

The future of Sonic Cult remains unclear. Gray reassumed control of the site late in 2004 after giving it up to a team of managers earlier in the year.

Sonic community message boards have been aflurry with activity since speculation of the Cult webmaster's arrest broke. On MoogleMB.com, forumer Neo-kun reacted to the story quite succinctly:

Nobody should ever be raped. Ever. The people who do shit like this are the scum of the earth, and I hope that faggot Pach rots in a cold cell with a sex partner named "bubba" for the rest of his life.

On the Green Hill Zone board, a former Cult forumer, Djbrayster, wanted to give Gray the benefit of the doubt:

heh I like pach and I dunno how much truth is on the story, for all we know she could have lied. But thats for the courts to prove his innocence. And I really dunno what else to think.

Police arrest man for molesting teen girl

ATHERTON — An Atherton man is in jail on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old he met on the Internet.

The girl, who lives in Santa Cruz County, told police she met the suspect, Eric Robert Gray, 25, several months ago at a beach in Santa Cruz. The two exchanged addresses for instant messaging and corresponded until a couple weeks ago, when Gray suggested they meet in person again, said Atherton Police Sgt. Chris Madsen.

Gray invited the girl to come see a movie, picked her up and then drove her to his home — a converted garage apartment on the first block of Shearer Drive, Madsen said. One there, he allegedly sexually assaulted the girl.

Gray drove the girl home afterwards, telling her not to talk to anyone about what happened, Madsen said.

Gray was arrested on suspicion of oral copulation and digital penetration of a child under 16.

Madsen said the case is a good reason why parents should be aware of their children's Internet activity, and in particular who they are chatting with.

"Just like ID theft, this is sort of the crime of the future," he said.

Police ask that anyone with further information call Sgt. Chris Madsen at 752-0512.

Wow, what can I say? That's pretty creepy. Maybe just as bad as Paul Kidd. But from the sound of what happened, it might be a little to early to jump to conclusions.

That reminds me, did anyone ever find out just what did Paul get nailed with? I remember all the rumors about the "Happy Wriggles" art work he could have gotten in trouble with, but didn't. So what the hell did they get him with?

"Stalking teenage girls" has always been a primary characteristic of Internet Sonic Fandom-- recall how much of the scene as we know it today came from AOL chatrooms, and when the so-sexay attention whores migrated to the 'Net, the types of guys who followed them around came too. I've been to Sonic Cult before to see the crazy stuff that was never in Sonic games. I suddenly now remember in some cast page for one of the games Cream was desribed as something like "the love of my life".

It's an appendage, like a hand. Or an organ, but I've never heard of it being referred to as a digit (even if it's really really small). I've never heard any part of the body referred to as a digit other than the fingers.

What does all this mean? That even falling to the level of a rapist this guy couldn't make it past third base with a girl.

Your right. I think it started when Sonic was super popular, and to a pedo, the internet roleplaying sort, it's kinda the equivelent of "Hey there little girl, would you like this nice lollipop?".. but for the info age.

It wasn't exactly a classic pedo situtation-- the stalker freaks (and the stalkee freaks..) were a teen-aged community from the AOL Sonic boards. Teenage girls vying for online attention being as sexay and flirtatious as they could get away with; stooge males who were the base currency of popularity; stooge females who were to namedrop and buzz about Who Is It. Of course, the most profitable way to score points in this online community was to be a fan-artist, and given the middle-class American Teen audience, a fan-artist who drew sexay fan characters of whoever would be most socially advantageous to be associated with. (What I just wrote sounds very sociopathic. Of course all that they were doing was just normal teenager socializing, 'making friends'...)

There were definite Alpha-cliques that everyone tried to get into, centered primarily on those girls who drew their 'fansona' characters over-sexualized, and that was just begging for obessive male attention. I couldn't decided whether it was the attention-seeking artist girls who were the worst problem, or the stalker boys who tried everything to gain their attention and be accepted into the cliques with all the Girlz (setting up free Sonic fanart web archives...)

Hmm... The ages of those kids who were 12-16 back in 1995-1997, would be aged about 18-26 now.

Then again, about a classic pedo problem, alarm bells were run when I noticed the likes of Scott Alston hanging around...

And who could forget the fun times when the newly-Internetted AOL Sonic clique became a threat to the Rat.org/Yerf clique... :-)
