Post subject: Why do so many furries own ferrets? |
|
|
Ferrets are an odd animal. They're either sweet, or horribly mean, and they all smell. I don't care what you say - yes, you can bathe them, but usually within hours, their natural "YOU'LL NEVER HAVE A DATE BECAUSE YOU STINK LIKE ME" musk tends to exude.
They're a bit exotic, despite being domestic pets. What is it that furries see in these creatures? I mean, besides looking like a long fuzzy cock. |

I'd wager it's the exoticism.
"A dog? Bah, too pedestrian! A cat? Not for me, thank you! I'm different from other folks, a truly unique snowflake, and my choice of pet must reflect that! I have a ferret! I'm special! LOOK AT MEEEEEEEE!"
But I should talk, considering we've got an opossum here. :? |

You're double-plus special - small enough to have aids, have a girlfriend, and hell, she's made scat porn.. and you write anti-furry-retardation articles.
That's worth at least a 5% discount at Denny's. |

I had a ferret named "The Pope". It wasn't mean at all, and never bit anyone. However, it wasn't really super affectionate or anything either. It just wanted to hop around and play all the time. I washed it at least once a week and it still stunk, and was a veritable poop factory, but it was very entertaining to have around.
I owned a ferret because I lived alone in an apartment, and ferrets are very easy to get past about 90% of landlords out there that normally wouldn't allow pets. Though it was the source of no end of hilarity. I have about a hundred funny ferret stories, such as the two Moonie door-to-door missionaries who didn't speak English who barged into my apartment to play with the ferret, and the time the ferret lunged off my balcony into a snowdrift one floor below (causing me to run out into the snow in my underwear, in full view of an elementary school).
I still miss him. He wound up having to be put down after he developed some kind of fucked up bladder stones that hardened "like concrete" in his urinary tract, according to the veterinarian. |

Huge Beastmaster fans?
I would ask why so many own/want to own rats, but that answers itself when you realise how goth image and rats go together.
Ratties are cute though |

The only way I can adequately describe ferret smell is if you boiled sweet peas in honey, then took a piss in it.
I haven't given much thought to why so many own ferrets, but I'd have to go with the exotic thing as well. Remember, furries want to feel significantly special by being vastly different from the rest of the population. On top of which, dogs at least require walks, which require exercise... something most furries aren't big on. |

My vote goes with the exotic factor despite being domesticated for thousands of years. Also, ferrets are smaller than most dogs. But yeah, furries and ferrets... Maybe it's a genetic disposition (science will find teh furrie gene one of these days). But then again... you can't hump a ferret, so yeah... No clue why so many furries have ferrets. |

Because you can't fit a cat in a bookbag and the second a bird slips out of your greasy fingers, it's gone. |

Do any furries own chinchillas? Considering they're basically little furballs, I'd think the furs would go nuts for them. |

From what I hear they are VERY high maintanence animals, and thus cut into a furrie's wanking time. |

I'm sure there are. Come to think of it, one of the characters from Sabrina Online (Carli) is a chincilla. |

Chinchillas aren't high maintenance really, no worse than a rabbit however, they do have a nasty bite and you have to have them in pairs, plus if one dies the other normally dies soon after. A friend of mine used to keep them. |

I meant fur-wise. Don't they need to be brushed or anything? |

Yeah, but it's pretty easy to do. They tend to enjoy being brushed, so it's really not much more difficult than petting them. The biggest obstacle to chinchilla ownership, I'd say, is price. The little buggers cost $100 each!
Still, they are damn cute.
edit: Micah's got five chinchillas. And a chinchilla character. |

Don't forget giving them the sandbaths, it's really neat to watch.
Another neat chinchilla fact is, the females are larger then the males and they're the dominant ones, often choosing which male to mate with.
Degus do the same thing (and are very much like a little chinchilla) and have simular manerisms. |

I have a couple. They have tiny snouts, huge eyes that never shut and are perpetually paranoid. Not much fun. |

I have five chinchillas...and I don't know what kind other people get, but none of mine have ever bitten me!! Yes, they'll nibble at your fingers, especially if your fingers happen to smell like food...but I've never had problems with biting. And they're not much more maintenance than, say, rats. Just the basics...cleaning the cage, feeding them, letting them out to play...and giving them dustbaths, which is fun to watch! |

Hence the phrase "not *much more* maintenance than rats" rather than "exactly the same maintenance as rats"...;P |

Er, I know it was said that ferrets smell, but I never had a problem with it. I grew up around ferrets (my uncle owned ferrets), and I still like to go to pet stores to watch them destroy one another.
Yeah, I know what you mean as far as the gentle vs vicious ferrets go. I had the (not)pleasure of meeting a -very- evil albino ferret that would seek out my hand (regardless of where it was, it seemed) in order to scratch and bite at it tirelessly. I have scars. :(
As far as ferrets being popular among the furry fandom - ..Uh, are they? I kinda thought ferrets were popular in general, not just with one "fandom". |

Hm. Wehn I did teh petstore thing, we never kept ferrets for longer than a week when we got them in. Even the REAL mean ones... they were just snatched up!
personally, I don't care for them cause I've had one too many sink it's teeth into my tender little fingers. |

It also reveals that that thing looks NOTHING like axelfurret, thus leading me to conclude that he had the name before said pokemon..

When I first moved to America I bought some Spiny Mice. The guy at the pet store told me they where all female but sorta kinda fucked up a little and pretty soon I was pulling dead half eaten Spiny mice babies out of the cage. Not a fun time but since then I've gotten a rat and that seems to be working out fine. |
