Yeah, I pretty much suck at computers :(

Then again, I've been moody and irritable lately and I guess a vacation from the internet could do me some good...

Wow, depends on how you fucked it up. If you reformatted it then you're fucked (obviously.) If you did a quick-format you could possibly get some data back, but it'd be expensive and a real bitch in general. If you used a giant partition and now Windows can't read it (I see this happen often) then you need to enable 48-bit LBA. Please for to be giving more details plz.

Well, you see it's like this...

I have a Sony Vaio, and instead of a plain install of Windows it comes with three System Recovery discs filled with all manner of crappy, now-outdated Sony apps and shit. It also takes over twenty minutes to do a clean install with that, PLUS the time installing the XP2 disc and other updates, PLUS however long it takes to uninstall all the crapware I have no use for... then add in the time tweaking and adjusting personal settings, and that's still not including reinstalling stuff like Java/Flash/Shockwave/Japanese language support or any of my most used programs like Winamp and Media Player Classic.

Because of all that I use Acronis Image Backup, which lets me do a clean install in just a few minutes. So what happened here?

I had my 120gb hard drive pah-titioned 10gb for the OS, and the rest for other stuff. Windows was slowing down a bit and I hadn't cleared it out in awhile, so I ran Acronis. Partway through, the restoration of my C: drive was interrupted, and the comp rebooted. Instead of trying again, I inserted the system recovery disc and went through the whole thing, only to have the startup hang and refuse to boot into windows :?

So I pop in my Acronis boot CD and take a look at my drives, and it's showing my disk with no partition and Windows (partially?) installed on it.

So what am I using now? I took out my 120gb disk, put back my old 60gb one and installed Windows on that. I checked my 250gb one and found my data (DVD rips and tons of lossless music YAY!) all snuggly safe and sound, so I switched that one out with my 120gb to examine the damage done to it.

Currently in Computer Management it's showing a 9.34gb partition as unallocated space, and another partition with 2.09gb used space (partial Windows install), and 100gb free.

Anyway, I know I've used a program a while back that could do some pretty deep scans for lost data on NTSC file systems. I was playing around with it and was able to recover some bits and pieces even from my old 60gb drive that had at the time been reinstalled over more than once. Granted most of this data was damaged, but I'm hoping something small like a text file on a big hard drive might have survived the meteor impact.

Problem is, I can't remember what it was called:(

On a related note, the last time I did something like this I was messing aroung with a program called Eraser, and obliterated the data so thoroughly it would have taken the FBI some work to recover anything :D

hmm... a vacation could do me some good

Hey! Yeah! What he said. <Duh on me, the thought never crossed my mind> Point of fact, can't you do that with most of your password-protected things? I mean, it'll take more time than just finding the text file, but it'll work.

Or, I guess, you could do a find file for every .txt file on your puter and look at them one at a time.

A password for your password? Should you have a password for that too? Ugh... Brain hurting. Good thing your cute Sue avatar is there to help heal the hurting.

Most places I've been to the passwords are stored in an encrypted database. The mods shouldn't know my password, and even they couldn't be able to retrieve it.

that's why you should use password for your password.

Actually, I was using the same password for everywhere before going along and varying them all to something more secure. The only reason I can log into this old nick and my LJ account is because I hadn't changed those two yet.

would it be wrong of me to try to log into your name just to see if it would work

Hey, go for it. Just don't get banned for ZOMG HACKING ATTEMPT

Just use active@undelete. It worked just fine for me.

Thanks, I'll try that and post the results. I also see a few apps up on bit torrent I might try as well. I'm confident I'll be able to recover something, though how corrupted it may be I couldn't guess.

Most large internet service providers have customer service lines, suck though they may. I've lost my passwords for yahoo and comcast cable before, and I've called, put up with a long ass wait, and gotten my passwords reset. Once he has the default email, he can request passwords from other sites.

I see Skunkie has Google's G Mail. Well, here's their help page, providing some solutions for password recovery along with a contact addie for resolving further problems. It's not perfect, but it's something. =)

And, again, there's always searching through your 6 million .txt files. =D

Thanks for everyone's help and advice :)

Unfortunetly so far all I've been able to recover is pretty useless to me, though I'm going to try a few more apps before I write it off as a total loss.

On the plus side, as you can see Mitch was able to reset my forum password so Skunk still lives on! Also, I found out I can recover some of my email accounts as it seems I only have to give them the name of my first pet and they'll let me reset my password. That's a bit disconcerting, considering that seems less secure than the password itself :(

From there I should be able to recover my other account stuff...

Now building my fursmut collection back up may be a challenge, as some of it was practically irreplaceable, including my own art. It's all gone, but it give me a chance to start all over again AND THIS TIME I'LL DO IT RIGHT!

Stronger than ever, ever before...
