From that article, it looks like the protesters weren't really doing much to warrant an armed response like that. But then again, they were protesting the war. So they were probably terrorists.

Where I live in Berkeley, we have anti-war protests just about every week. But it's mostly just kids who don't really care what they're protesting as long as they get to participate in an honest-to-gosh Berkeley protest. See, in the old days, back in Nam, when you had a protest, you broke shit and threw shit and when the cops showed up to beat you into submission you hit back and went to jail. Kids nowadays just have these fucking useless peaceful protests where they sing "Kumbayaa" and hold hands and when the cops arrive they peacefuly disperse. That's no way to protest anything. How the hell can you expect to force any sort of change if you make it easier for The Man to just send a couple cops by just going home whenever The Man arrives? I want to see armed rebellion.

Now harrassing tanks, THAT'S a protest.

I heard an interesting comment.. I cant remember who or where... but basically thier point was that - back in the 60's it was such a conservative era that simply not cutting your hair or doing drugs was a massive statement of revolt against society. And to see massive crowds of people all being 'individuals' scared the living shit out of the establishment at that time. Now, today the whole facepaint, long hair, "hippie" thing is marketed nostalgia. When people do these street-theatre 60's era styled protests they arn't doing anything at all. Its been institutionalized and its not a threat to anyone.

The government/establishment/status-quo nowadays isn't afraid of individuality. Not a bit, individuality is sold at hot topic (not that people cant "be individuals" but thats not the point). Its easy to silence and dismiss a crowd of individuals.

All these protests should be a show of solidarity and numbers and nothing more.

Thats interesting to me ..you see, I never knew war ended communism -- since it didn't. Not once. These are the sorts that believe Reagan brought down the Soviet Union single handley.

I think the Beast did it best a few years ago when they attended some large protest in (I believe NYC) and they pointed out that the 7 lonely college republicans on a balcony that got a disproportionatly large part of the coverage in most media -- holding signs saying things like "Hippies go home!" -- ignored for example the 6ft tall black kid with cornrows down below screaming for them to come down to street level so he could kick the living shit out of them. :)

The whole anti-war demographic is so large its impossible to narrow down to such a short statement like that - but hey its a free country! These people are more than free to waste their time trying.

There arn't too many hippies left.. So I dont see what the big fuckin deal is , to be honest. Tho as I said before - these dorks that go out with the costumes and folk music and all this other bullshit to protest are disgracing very serious issues with thier obnoxious behavior. It makes it too easy to dismiss. Thats not what any post-1970 protest should look like.

It doesn't really matter tho, ProtestWarriors are pro-war, they want it now! and more of it baby! well, sucks to be them cause no matter how much more conflict we want to start - we can't. Thats the harsh reality right there. We're tied up completely by Iraq and Afghanistan (hey! remember that?! -- Its still going on, hard to believe huh?)

You learn to question things and seek knowledge, different schools of thought, consider different things -- ultimately think for yourself. Such people will tend to favor progressive change. Or at the very least -- they don't give a fuck about tax-cuts for fat cats and completely transparent justifications for a discretionary war, just cause its wrapped in the American flag.

You know, now I don't feel alone in my sentiment that Patriotism is being mass-marketed and commercialized. Every time I see all of the gaudy magnetic ribbons shown in multiplicity, and the dime-store flags hung on SUV antennas, it starts to revolt me.

Last time I tied to state a point leading to this, I almost got a redneck to punch my lights out. Yeah, some freedom of speech, jerk.

You see, sometimes the greatest form of patriotism is standing up for what you believe your coultry should be. I honeslty miss the merica I was raised to believe in. No, anybody who doesn't support the president 100% in all his decisions, as educated people are wont to do, is a liberal. Don't you understand the black and white landscape of politics? If you waver even the slightest bit from conservative principles, it's straight into the Liberal Pit with you. Well if you want to get down to brass tacks, there really actually is only a small handful of reasons to vote that way -- Either you are white and rich, white and mortified of varying degrees of gun control, or you are white and now set in a decent career, you make salary and routinely work over 40 hours with no overtime and you now desperatly want tax cuts all over the place cause thats only way to increase your income.

I'm only half joking there, unfortunatly. Everyone I know that voted for Bush did so because they are paranoid of terrorists everywhere or they are gun types. (and a guy who constantly talks about tax cuts all the time even though he can't be making over $15k a year, full time in a grocery store... seriously)

I voted nader, and will continue to vote for alternate parties as the democrats slide further right selling out thier own political base. I'm far enough left at this point, I just about despise the democrats. (or maybe I haven't moved, politcally, at all. Maybe the whole country is just shifting further and further right... I dunno)

Unfortunately, if you were to somehow strip away all other political discourse, you know you'd have bitter, fiery arguments between the hot tea/iced tea camps. Heres another one: if you are studying world history for years, and its pretty clear that no empire ever has ever lasted, why would you support doctrine built on a foundation of building a new American empire? Agree or disagree , its common sense with a historical precedent, yet we've been at it consistantly since the end of WWII -- and its failed consistantly , depended on who you talk to... (hey, even Noam Chomsky says we didn't lose Vietnam, albeit in a way most people wouldnt be comfortable acknowledging).

I wish I was better at giving direct quotes from people, but its true, the ignorant are typically cocksure and the educated are filled with doubt. I'm not tooting my own horn, but I question everything everyday. My own beliefs, my own stances on issues.

Through the 50's, 60's and 70's we had to be steadfastly against communism.. why ? 'Why' is not a question the right wing typically likes to hear. They just don't. And if you do ask why, they want to tie you into it. You don't support the 'war on terror' you must be a terrorist . Why can't we seem to ally with a country with simply a different economic stucture is a mystery to me. (propaganda) Its been shown that way back, communist countries were equally likely to ask the US as Russia for help. But if you ask why its somehow evil..that means your for it. Sorry! Thats the way is it. I dont run things, dont fuckin blame me :) Its not my party or even my part of the political spectrum, its not my responsibility to change it.
