I hate MTV.

Edit: To clarify, I hate MTV because they only play music when everyone is sleeping and the rest of their programing is 16 hours of utter crap.

I feel old. I remember when MTV played actual music and the occasional non-music gem like <insert animated series here>.

I hate MTV.

I hate MTV because it obsesses over the pop culture it created. I hate it because it invented reality TV. Because it promotes pop-gangsta culture. Because it has created a fabricated need for impractical and expensive consumer toys. Because it subtly promotes a materialistic market with Pimp My Ride, Room Raiders, Made, and Cribs.

But mostly because it does all this, while telling teenagers they can change the world. That they can be 'global'. Make a difference, do something amazing - by sending money. Not by going out, getting an education, volunteering or joining an organization or Heaven forbid stop watching TV or anything worthwhile. No, MTV highlights a cause, one at a time, and tells kids the only way to help is by going to their website and donating. It's an artificial construct to make teens feel better about themselves. Self esteem problems? MTV can tell you how to donate to the Red Cross. Feel better immediately! Keep watching MTV! The problem area shifts regularly - the tsunami, Sudan, AIDS, the rainforest, whatever. MTV can teach you how to be 'global' - you cannot do this without MTV's assistance. Your parents were never 'global', of course, all they care about is the national economy and their jobs and material possessions. But watching MTV News and donating to MTV's charity, you can be better than them! Those 20 inch dubs on your Blazer might be gaudy and excessive, but it doesn't matter once you're 'global'. Look at Cameron Diaz - she's Trippin' - listen to Bono, see what they do! MTV says they're awesome!

So don't feel bad that you're buying copies of Madden for your Xbox when African children are starving because the tsunami gave them AIDS - all that matters is you give a little to a charity of MTV's choice. Every little bit helps, after all, and you spent that much on mocha lattle frappuchino last week - you can give up that luxury for a few days, and feel good doing it! Congratulations! You're 'global'!

Edit: Stoneth, welcome to 1998. Which was the year that observation stopped being funny.

I think you're taking his post wrong, here. It doesn't look like he was attempting to be funny to me. That or his post totally went over my head. There are people out there who actually remember when MTV was "good", and have long since stopped watching or caring what they do.

I still don't get why people are so up in arms about them. I mean, if MTV wants to suck then let MTV fucking suck and move on already.

I do not remember when I removed MTV from my TV's channel memory.
Don't miss it and I am not going to check what it is like now.
It was bad enough last time I seen it.
Whenever that was.

i rmember oh about 20 years ago whne MTV just started, and they actually used to run entertaining rock music vidoes, and little else, Now as we all know they running nothing but the latest hip-hop/gangsta/etc videos with a bunch of no tanlent sound alikes yelling about the same stupid things, females are ho's, killing cops is good, being a criminal is a graet way to make a living, etc...
Yuck..

But then again MTV is owned by the same big media corporation that gives us Nickelodion, and all of it's shitty and cheep ass animation.

So they get you as a kid, then they get you as a teen, by the time you figured out that you've been had it's too late.

I've seen a good song playing on MTV only three times in my entire life and I always check it for Jackass, Beavis and Butthead or some other ok series when I surf through the channels...

I think it's kind of sad that best programs on a channel deticated for music do not contain music.

What about the music video comentaries that Beavis and Butthead would do in between episodes? Does that not count as containing music?

Fuck MTV. Watch Vh1, the 24 hour 100 (somethingest) (something) list channel.

Also, Railfoxen's second post really said everything that needs to be said about MTV.
