Is that a Buggles song originally? The only version I ever heard was the POTUS one. 'Wuss rig' is the greatest guitar name EVAR! |

Ahem...YES. ;) "Video..." was written, recorded, etc. by the Buggles in 1979 (predating the version by the Presidents by quite a few years!). The video for the song was, incidentally, the first music video shown on MTV (that was in 1981).
Aside from wussing up the song (although I don't mind their version TOO much), the Presidents also changed one of the lines - "and now I understand the supernova scene" was, in the Buggles version, "and now I understand the problems you could see."

You didn't know that the Buggles originally wrote that song? Oy. It was only the first ever music video ever played on MTV. I like the PUSA cover too, but I think I like the original version better. Stoneth = big sucker for 80s music.

I just fricking hate music that doesn't say anything in can relate to, i only like hiphop and all the heads that were good in the 80's like dmc, eric sermon, and busta rhymes absolutely suck now. Do you honestly blame me for hating that shit after being subjected to hours of right said fred and paula abdule and new kids on the block? |

Hiphop...?
No offense to anyone...but hiphop/rap and country are the two genres of music that I cannot stand. XD
Guess we're even now, then...;)
Oh...I would like to mention that Paula Abdul and NKOTB are probably more properly considered early '90s music, though perhaps late '80s, I'm not sure because I was never a huge fan of either. I tend to like early to mid '80s, and I lean more toward synthpop rather than plain dance music - aside from the Buggles, I'd list a Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears, Dollar, ABC, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, the Police, Propaganda, Duran Duran, Asia, and Electronic as some of my favorites. |

Ugh, I hate hip hop and rap. Love country though.
As for 80's music, for me, I don't really have favorites. I bought this 80's CD boxset the other day with about a hundred songs in it...I adore it! It's got everything...the Go Go's, Blondie, Tommy Tutone, ect. |

You know, I think just about everybody I know, myself included went through the whole phase of loudly proclaiming "I like everything but rap and country!". I guess it must be some sort of stage that all young proto-hipsters go through when they reach a certain age. My guess it that it's probably a reaction to MTV and VHS and other popular music-advertising mediums' constant hyping of the genres during the 90s (and maybe more recently, I haven't watched MTV ot TV in general in roughly forever), giving the impression that all rap artists are thick-lipped mysogenist pimpdaddies, and all country musicians are Toby Kieth-type pinheads.
Explore damnit! Illegal file-swapping programs are there for a reason, you know.

All young proto-hipsters...? I'm willing to bet that at 26, I'm older than the large majority of people who post here.

And that's why I have very wide tastes in the types of music that I like ('80s synthpop being my favorite genre, but I like stuff ranging from classical to orchestral soundtracks to spaghetti western themes like Ennio Morricone to new age to...yeah, you get the idea. :P
Then again, some people are just beyond hope...

That's cool, no offense to anyone but there are about 10,000 genre's of music i can't stand. 80's music, country, folk, and pop are the absolute worst offenders though.
I just don't like the sound of music, i listen to it pretty much solely for content and conscious hiphop (yeah i fuckign HATE that term but I hate it when people lump groups like Living Legends and Bored Stiff in with Eminem, Master P and three6 mafia, two completely different genres of music) delivers on that, it's basically poetry with a beat and super creative production which makes it aesthetically pleasing enough to the ears for me to bump(yeah, poetry sucks too  ).
That plus hiphop is so diverse considering it takes influence/samples from every genre of music out there and uses it to create an entirely different one it can never really get old cuz it's constantly evolving. |

I feel absolutely violated.
First of all, not all of those are kittens, i saw some filthy disgusting cats(old kittens).
Second of all, the whole kitten war is a sham. What have we been fighting for? I clicked on about 30 kittens before i noticed that it automatically proclaims the one you pick the winner. That is misleading, and it's using kittens to do the misleading. Absolutely shameful. |

I used to think hip hop sucked. Then I was exposed to some material that wasn't MTV. Baserock's exactly right, the genres are worlds apart. Their playlists have as much in common with good hip hop as ClearChannel radio and German metal. And there is good rap. Just not on TV. I suspect the same dichotomy exists in the country genre. The cowboy poets are ashamed. (PM me for acoustic folk music about vampires. I do not know what genre to call this, other than 'fucking awesome'.)
What's in Raix's CD-R player? Assemblage 23, Velvet Acid Christ, Laibach, Apoptygma Berzerk, Seabound, Project Pitchfork, Crystal Method, A Spell Inside, Juno Reactor, BlutEngel, Unheilig, Future Sound of London, Prodigy, Absurd Minds, Wumpscut, Stromkern, Ravenous...
But hey, if you can stand manufactured commercial crap from the 80s, more power to you. I'm sure the artists thank you (the ones who haven't died from drug overdoses, natch). |

I have often heard that MTV restricts itself to the really crappy rap and hip hop, and that better stuff exists. And admittedly, an old college buddy of mine had some rap CDs that weren't bad at all. The problem, of course, is a complete lack of guidance. You don't hear any of the good stuff on radio or MTV, so unless you're willing to buy albums at random and hope you dig up a gem, you're pretty much lost.

Thank you for the backup. It drives me nuts how people say "I hate teh hiphop music! It's so violent and negative!". Even though i would get absolutely punked for saying this at a hiphop show, I classify the two different types as hiphop 8) , and rap :x . The key difference is that none of those industry rappers get to write there own material, the record execs tell them what the fans want to hear, tells them what the hook should be and they have there studio guy make up a catchy beat.
Rail, if you liked what you heard limewire(or whatever) any song by The Grouch or Eligh, it's easy to find and they are litererally some of the best songwriters i've ever heard, plus they produce there own shit.
I guess theres two sides like that to every genre for the most part. The dumbed down mass apeal crap, and the independent creative stuff. I've met people that listen to underground rock, country, folk, jazz, you name it. I guess theres no underground pop is there? That's a contradiction in terms i think.
What the hell were these pop stars doing before they became pop stars anyway? |

Any illigal file sharing program can help you out. I suggest Limewire, due to it's lack of spy and adware. Generally if I find an artist I like, and I listen to a lot of their music, THEN i go out and buy a cd. I don't see the point in buying a $15 CD for one song, and the rest are crap. If an artist has good music, however, the $15 is justifyable. |

<Gorth> apparently "led zeppelin" was pretty popular
<Gorth> BACK IN THE DAY
The Idea of underground country music is hilarious. These are people who liked tractors and America BEFORE IT WAS COOL. |

You don't hear any of the good stuff on radio or MTV, so unless you're willing to buy albums at random and hope you dig up a gem, you're pretty much lost..
My own favorite is Gnucleus. It's fast, clean, and doesn't chomp half your processor's time.
As far as I can tell, it's the best barebones P2P program around. |

Shareaza does the trick for me. eDonkey support is flaky to the point of uselessness, but it gets you into two other networks as well, including the one Limewire uses. |

Lesiem. Rock Gregorian Chanting.
Afrocelts. Combination of natural african drums and irish folk flutes and strings.
Bond. Four hot chicks with violins and a cello.
Dogthing. Hippie.
Liar. I am the antithesis to hippy.
Oh and Afrocelts IS awesome. It almost sounds like electronica at times, but the sounds are real drums. |

Am I the only one here who thinks it's very fucking odd that 'underground' music has become the new mainstream? It's like Blair Witch audio. You guys know that not all popular musicians are crap right? I mean hell, I still have Madonna albums for crying out loud.
Rap, I can understand enjoying. It's a type of music, it has it's own characterization and can be about anything really. A white rich kid can indeed rap. On the other hand, country is... ugh.
Ever hear that old joke about a hick music station having "both types of music, country and western!" I think it sums up my view of country. Even things as varied as "Achie Breaky Heart" and "Save a horse, ride a cowboy" are still both fueled by that Larry the Cable Guy culture and popularity rather than their own distinction as music. Folk music is it's own genre... country is not. Country is to folk as furry is to sci-fi. No comparison. |

Why is it odd? I think that's just how it goes. Music, visual art, or whatever - yesterday's avantgarde will often (but not always!) be tomorrow's mainstream. |

I mean that not in terms of taste, but popularity. For every high schooler who listens to Linkin Park and Britney Spears, there is about equal numbers for whom the more obscure the better. It translates right into twenty somethings too. Ican't begin to describe how many times I've seen a game played where people try to name more small back alley bands than someone else. I wouldn't mind if they do it for the music, or if they know said band personally... But underground in general is rapidly becoming the new pop, which violates the very principle of underground.
That everyone wants to be different, obscure, foreign and exotic crap... |

A logical development in a Western culture ever more fixated on the wishes and needs of the individual. Not too many years ago being cool meant being a part of what was the new flavour of the times; today it means standing out and being not a part of anything. Actually much more stressful than running with the pack. |

You forgot to talk about the one that's about the hicks that take their bass boats and rope them togehter and call it the Redneck Yacht Club. I only know about that one cause the hicks around here really do rope tehir boats together and have parties.
Seriousley, though. I don't understand people that listen to only one genre of music. Right now, on my playlist, I have Lesiem (which I just downloaded cause Dogthing mentioned them) Lorenna McKennet, the DI.FM eurodance channel, Some Cat Stevens stuff, Linkin Park, Montgomery Jackson, some OC Remix stuff, and then Mozart. I have a smallish collection of just about every genre of music you could want, from thrashcore to techno to metal to classical to new age. 15 gigs. Bah. I can't help being an audiophile. |

Bullshit. "Individualism" is mass marketed. Goths, Emos, Straight Edges, Skaters and others are the 'individual'. The only 'group' of young people who don't conform to culture anymore are budding Republicans.
Likewise, the obscurity craze in music is not individualistic, it is merely varied.
Example time. I used a P2P program once, but I used to find music I like, not just to screw the RIAA (first fault of obscurity craze). I happen to have a hard-on for Egyptian sounding rock. Hooray for me being an individual (still not really, eggy crap is on a resurgence; You have more 15 year olds toting ankhs now than actual egyptians ever wore)! Anywho, so I know of a few tracks like Nightwish's Tutankhamen or Live's Forever Might Not Be Long Enough, but say I want a whole band.
I find Ra through the P2P program. I like a few songs, and buy the CD (many of the uber obscure bands can never put out a CD, hence a good reason for obscurity freaks to be cheap assholes).
Now, let's get hypothetical. Ra lands a radio hit, and does a talk show circut after a small tour. They're semi-popular. Logically, I should be thrilled and hope they become big enough to tour in my town. Of course, an obscurity freak would be disgusted by them 'selling out' and seek more from Kazaa.
It's like all the people who helped Linkin Park make it big (they chose that name because they wanted to be near Limp Bizkit on record store shelves) and loved the rap/rock fusion big band... and then once they got popular starting to mock it as crappy and emo.
I hate obscurity for the sake of obscurity or 'sticking it to the man' by avoiding liking any bands who can put out a buyable product. |

'The obscurity craze' doesn't really exist in popular culture. There's a drive to 'hear the next big thing before everybody else does', through radio stations and buzz bands, demo discs, movie soundtracks and MTV's previews of up and coming artists. Which could be mistaken for the obscurity craze, but no one ever complains about artists 'selling out'. Really. The kids are content to brag about being fans before everyone else. Wouldn't you be loathe to insult your one claim to originality? Wouldn't you want the artist to become popular so people would care about you? (Such is my experience.)
It seems a lot worse to us than it is, look at what cliques you're in. I hear it pretty often among my friends, in high school we were the kids dressed in black listening to Chemical Brothers or The Crystal Method before they were big, and now they're on MTV. But we're over it. Some of us went to see Evanescence in concert. Point being that when I looked around, I found no one cared about truly obscure music or selling out. The music fags are clustered around certain bands and genres, which do make good music. If you like the music, you meet the clique, you hear the whining.
'In The End' is my graduating class song. Trust me, LP is mockable on their own merits. Their popularity just makes them visible.
Not that AP's arguments are wrong. The numbers just seem a bit off - for every high schooler who masturbates to obscure music, there are a dozen who just don't care. |
