Ahem...YES. ;) "Video..." was written, recorded, etc. by the Buggles in 1979 (predating the version by the Presidents by quite a few years!). The video for the song was, incidentally, the first music video shown on MTV (that was in 1981).

Aside from wussing up the song (although I don't mind their version TOO much), the Presidents also changed one of the lines - "and now I understand the supernova scene" was, in the Buggles version, "and now I understand the problems you could see."

I attribute my lifelong hatred of music to growing up in the 80's and only having exposure to mtv and the radio. 80's fucking sucked.

i only like hiphop and all the heads that were good in the 80's like dmc, eric sermon, and busta rhymes absolutely suck now. Do you honestly blame me for hating that shit after being subjected to hours of right said fred and paula abdule and new kids on the block?

Oh...I would like to mention that Paula Abdul and NKOTB are probably more properly considered early '90s music, though perhaps late '80s, I'm not sure because I was never a huge fan of either. I tend to like early to mid '80s, and I lean more toward synthpop rather than plain dance music - aside from the Buggles, I'd list a Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears, Dollar, ABC, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, the Police, Propaganda, Duran Duran, Asia, and Electronic as some of my favorites.

My guess it that it's probably a reaction to MTV and VHS and other popular music-advertising mediums' constant hyping of the genres during the 90s (and maybe more recently, I haven't watched MTV ot TV in general in roughly forever), giving the impression that all rap artists are thick-lipped mysogenist pimpdaddies, and all country musicians are Toby Kieth-type pinheads.

I used to think hip hop sucked. Then I was exposed to some material that wasn't MTV. Baserock's exactly right, the genres are worlds apart. Their playlists have as much in common with good hip hop as ClearChannel radio and German metal. And there is good rap.

You don't hear any of the good stuff on radio or MTV, so unless you're willing to buy albums at random and hope you dig up a gem, you're pretty much lost..

Any illigal file sharing program can help you out. I suggest Limewire, due to it's lack of spy and adware. Generally if I find an artist I like, and I listen to a lot of their music, THEN i go out and buy a cd. I don't see the point in buying a $15 CD for one song, and the rest are crap. If an artist has good music, however, the $15 is justifyable.

Why is it odd? I think that's just how it goes. Music, visual art, or whatever - yesterday's avantgarde will often (but not always!) be tomorrow's mainstream.

Even things as varied as "Achie Breaky Heart" and "Save a horse, ride a cowboy" are still both fueled by that Larry the Cable Guy culture and popularity rather than their own distinction as music. Folk music is it's own genre... country is not. Country is to folk as furry is to sci-fi. No comparison.

You forgot to talk about the one that's about the hicks that take their bass boats and rope them togehter and call it the Redneck Yacht Club. I only know about that one cause the hicks around here really do rope tehir boats together and have parties.

Seriousley, though. I don't understand people that listen to only one genre of music. Right now, on my playlist, I have Lesiem (which I just downloaded cause Dogthing mentioned them) Lorenna McKennet, the DI.FM eurodance channel, Some Cat Stevens stuff, Linkin Park, Montgomery Jackson, some OC Remix stuff, and then Mozart. I have a smallish collection of just about every genre of music you could want, from thrashcore to techno to metal to classical to new age. 15 gigs. Bah. I can't help being an audiophile.

A logical development in a Western culture ever more fixated on the wishes and needs of the individual. Not too many years ago being cool meant being a part of what was the new flavour of the times; today it means standing out and being not a part of anything.
