From the 'French People Do The Darndest Things' file:

David Thiel opened fire on 21 July when the low-flying helicopters disturbed his afternoon nap near Grasse in the south of France, court sources said.

More in the BBC article. 81 years of age and he flips out like that, then assaults police. That's surreal.

Your social security check is late! Stuff costs more than it used to! Young people use curse words! Perhaps we need to cast a wary eye on Floridan retirees, before they revolt...

I'm gettin the oddest mental image of a senior citizen in some welding shop inquiring as to the price of adding machine gun mounts to their walker.

Well, if french old people are like my french grandfather,a revolution could easily be averted with a great feast and many steins of beer for everyone.

If only they'd tried that during the first revolution, who knows what could have been?

Cut him some slack, he's old and he needs his rest. Better he was shooting at a low flying metal object than his ex co workers/school mates like we love to do in America. I didn't even know you could own guns in france.

Hear hear. IHe didn't shoot anybody, though, so he deserves some ragging on.
And, like in most European countries, it's pretty difficultto own a gun. You need a license, which takes an exam that has to be renewed and there's serious limits as to what you can actually use it for.
An exception is Sweden, where ex-military guys get to keep their sidearm. This strikes me as pretty reasonable, since they've had gun training and all.

I love the old dude's attitude, though. Going down kicking and screaming! Blaze of glory! Attica! Hack the planet!

The French are gun nuts who drive terribly and are over-opinionated arse-holes that throw a tantrum when they don't get their own way. Their leader is also a crook who got in by exploiting a poor election system and who's foreign policy seems to be to annoy anyone foreign as much as possible.

Sounds oddly familiar, dosn't it? :D

Oh my sweet LORD their driving... Paris has these lovely wide roads with no lane markings. Standing atop the Arc de Triomphe (quite a climb, worth it for the view) you're surrounded by a big roundabout with roads in all directions and it's amazing to see those Twingos and Deux-Cheveaux spinning around and careening from left to right, gunning the engines and hitting the brakes and utting each other off. It's a miracle there aren't lethal car accidents at every corner.

"Tu es pas normal, hein!"

Plenty of guns in France, Italy, Denmark, Norway... In Germany and the United Kingdom OTOH, it's very difficult to own a gun. Also, in regards to the ex-military thing, that would be Switzerland, not Sweden.

This is probably why the Americans and the French love hating each other. They're so alike when it comes down to it.

I stand duly corrected.

And the comparison between the Yanks and the Franks are compelling. Both are narcissistic about their food -- the French throw a hissy fit when foreign sparkling white's called Champagne, Americans (and I've seen this more than once) loudly leave restaurants when they lean that Coca-Cola is served, not Pepsi, and return some ten minutes later with an arm full of Pepsi bottled bought from a vending machine halfway across town.

And yet they both have such sweet, cuddly, endearing qualities. Those jaunty berets, that cute armour Yank boys feel they need to wear in order to play a wimpy version of rugby...

I would hate to live in a country where you can't get guns if your a law abiding person. I'll admit i do have an obsession with firearms but it could be for the better to have ultra strict laws like much of europe. When i took my small arms permit test when i was 21. There was this guy taking it right next to me who was probably the biggest idiot i've ever seen. He had to ask his buddy what county he lived in :x. He passed with the bare minimum and he claimed he studied the booklet for a week and a half, whereas I bought the booklet, walked accross the street to taco bell and read it over the course of a bean burrito (about 3 minutes) then took the test scoring 100%. I don't know about you guys but i find that scary

Hey, I've got no problems with responsible people owning firearms. I just want to be damn sure that the people owning them know what a responsibility it is.I'd be cool with more liberal gun laws where I lived if there were appropriate punitive consequences. Like, if you're licensed, passed tests and exams every bit as intense as a driver's license, you can carry a gun to defend yourself if you need to. However, if you accidentally shoot a bystander, you get a big-ass fine. Kill 'em, and you do serious time. Likewise if your kid finds your gun and shoots himself -- any parent's going to do their best to prevent that, obviously, but when it happens it shouldn't be just unfortunate, it should be criminal negligence.

See, I live a post-industrial decaying wasteland , and I think the solution is to turn the whole city into Vegas Plus...eliminate the smoking ban, legalize everythign ... dope, prostitution, gambling, guns... Im sure it would fuck up things in the sense that people in general arn't assholes here, at least not to each other.. but hey, times are-a-changin

gotta break a few eggs and all that.. but still, with america falling to the fundamentalists as we speak... thats the revitalization plan my money's riding on, its an angle, baby! :)

(not to mention it would be a nice "fuck you!" to the rest of my entire state)

I saw part of a short film the other day that revolved around a baguette with an iron pipe in it being used for violent purposes in a supermarket.

They do that shit here, too. Especially here in the south, where all dark caffeineated soda is "Coke". Every so often, some Yankee will come down to visit and get a hair up his ass when he orders a Coke and gets served a Pepsi, since it's all the same thing here. They also have a bad habit of confusing servers by ordering something called "pop".

That came perilously close to sounding like Southern pride. God I've been living here too long.

Wait... when you read the word "Americans", you take it to mean "Yankees"? I'm confused now.

Prostitution is actually not legal in Vegas, the cops just don't enforce the Nevada law mostly.

I'm actually for a comprimise between the libretarian near-anarchy and the authoritarian police state. Sadly, if I had to choose though, it's better to live in Germany than Somalia, no? (I'm from New Jersey, I dare you to name a more punitive state government.)

Here in the South, northerners are referred to as Yankees. I know people outside the US refer to all Americans as "Yanks", but inside America it just refers to them people what live up north.

WTF! WTF IS THAT!

Passing with a bare minimum... bet he shot his brain scratching his head with his gun.

I do find it scary. Scary that some jerk that doesnt even bother to know the law decides he wants to carry around a loaded fire arm.

And this thing with yanks is real simple... in the US, Northerners=Yanks. Any place else on earth, Americans=Yanks.

Going to Iraq soon and I'm sure a good ol boy from deep Texas is gonna get an ear full of "YANK"

Damn yanks and their "POP"

Acctuall no, i live in the most gun unfriendly part of the country besides NY city and parts of Maine. Nobody get's to acctually carry a loaded firearm, not even in your car. That's why the bay area has some of the highest spree/workplace shooting rates in the country. In lousiana that shit doesn't happen much cuz half the men in the building will be packing. But also half THOSE men are unstable alcoholics (probably), so it's a vicious circle of problems. All I know is, me likey guns.

Nor do they here. I was in Hollywood the other day and saw about 15 prostitutes standing alongside cops and people in bootlegged Mickey Mouse costumes.

Who abides to every law? Do you always drive at the speed limit, never litter and always report every cent you earn to the taxman?

If a record of abiding to law was the only measurement to gun ownership, no Americans would own guns.

True, i do indeed smoke bud and j-walk on a regular basis and I am a nearly convicted felon but i mean like, your not selling tweak and trying to off the competition, not trying to kill anybody or generally living a life of crime by selling drugs/hookers. Other than the dro and the j walking I consider myself a pretty upstanding law abiding citizen. I don't steal (anymore) and would never really hurt anybody and would never use a firearm for nefarious acts of any kind. I should have the right to own a firearm. I fully support not allowing violent felons to own handguns.

I hear frequently about elderly gun owners being startled and shooting one of there grandkids cuz they thought they were a prowler a la American Gun and other such tragedies. I'm just wondering since they have mandatory frequent retests for old folks to keep there drivers licenses should it be the same with guns? I wouldn't trust an 87 year old alzheimers patient with a .45 more than i would trust one with a bigrig. If you can't remember what planet/city you live on you should not be allowed to own a gun.

I do acctually have a legitimate reason for my canabis club card so in my state I'm acctually not breaking a law by indulging, and even if i didn't have that, possession of under an oz is about a $140 dollar fine and a misdemeanor, skateboarding on the other hand is $220 dollar fine so it's basically a non crime and that's the mindset i was raised which is why i said that.

So it's only a crime if you were raised to think it was a crime? That's fair, because if a child was raised to think killing a woman wasn't murder, but that a man was, that would be his mindset and make it basically non-crime to kill some bitch, right?

Frankly, it doesn't matter to me who does what with what unless nobody acts unduly sadistic. Guns are damn sexy and I love 'em. Sure people shoot and get shot, but really. The gun tests should be harder, but on the other hand they make Darwin proud.

I don't know about sexy but i do love em, always have. Not only are they a great form of therapy but it truly is a physically and mentally demanding skill, that's what attracted me to them in the first place. It really takes the allure away when you see what they can do first hand. Needless to say I didn't want to go to the range after that for awhile. It ain't at all like the movies.

I jsut wish it wasn't so easy to pull a trigger for some people like mr Thiel (although who knows how much age was the factor in that). It makes me sick what people do with them.
