Well... they kill the players, anyway.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on Aug. 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed.

I suspect the food crumbs Hoovered out of the carpet ran out on day two.

EDIT: Seems the BBC has more. His poison? StarCraft. Apparently Blizzard kills more Koreans than cancer.

Well of course it'd be StarCraft.

How else could they all be so damn good at it. Apparently that's pretty much all they do over there. A group of friends and I were bored (read: stupid) enough to try our luck on the Asia Warcraft III server and got our asses handed to us like it was nothing.

Where do they find the time to just sit there and play nonstop like that? :(

Well, this guy had just gotten fired. Other than that, they're probably teenagers.

Pro tip: When your eyes start drooping, it's time for some sleep.

I really don't understand why the hell starcraft is so popular. I played it, had fun, then got over it. What is it about this game that holds such crack-like power over Asia?

I don't understand the popularity of starcraft in Asia either...
The whole crazy player dieing after an over-extended session is nothing new...
I did stumble across something else...
When was the last time you killed someone to resolve an online gaming dispute?

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe

I have absolutely no sympathy for this guy.

Although I am surprised that you can die of exhaustion just from staying up for 50 hours. I've stayed up 24 hours without any ill effects, so I can't imagine that staying up an extra 24 would kill you. Also, normally, wouldn't you just pass out from exhaustion before dying? There must be something else involved here, like, perhaps, massive doses of caffeine.

That's exactly what I thought when I read this.

Unlike help for traditional addictions, such as gambling, there is very little help for computer game addiction, he said.

"It is not taken seriously yet - it is the same for internet addiction," he said.

Too lazy to look for a link but this popped up on the IGN gamecube free board awhile ago. This guy who's in his 30's killed his 8 month old or so son by sticking him underneath a couch cushion and sitting on him because he kept baby speaking and getting in front of the tv when he was trying to play his gamecube. What makes this even worse is that the game he was playing at the time was True Crime: Streets of LA :x

I'm trying to figure out how this poopsock thing works and at the same time trying hard not to. Poop goes into sock? Er... while he's sitting in front of the gaming computer? I don't get it. I'm not sure I want to get it, but... somebody explain this?

This is OMG MY BRAIN info if ever there was.

I'm guessing that's ALL he had in that 50 hours. He probably could've stayed up for 50 hours no problem if he'd of taken a break or two and eaten. But hey, his ranking in starcraft was more important.

Wow. This guy should be stoned to death. Just like in the bible.

Edit: Poopsocks

ZERG RUSH KEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKE!

I'm sorry. I really have nothing to contribute to this thread. I couldn't help but think of that.

A game from 1998 claimed him? The least he could do was choose to die fromt something that WASN'T a sprite based RTS. I mean, I can see dying from too much Evercrack, WoW or Second Life, they cater to people without lives and are based upon lengthy RPGesque play. A fast clicking RTS though... He either had the speed turned way down or he was wasting a lot of time clicking on the units over and over to get the funny remarks.

For the record, I have been up close to 50 hours for something non-computer related, and it gets exponentially harder on your body. After about 30 hours, your head starts to ache, regardless of how much you eat, not that you can trust your hunger to indicate if you need food anyway. All those bodily feelings just start getting muddled or jumbled.

Sleep is good, m'kay.

The Korean gaming market is far too obsessed with RTS games (Starcraft in particular) for my tastes. Some even have this complex for getting back at Japanese players on online games (despite the fact that the Japanese gaming market is more run by console games) for stuff their grandfathers did back in the war. I'm not surprised that some Gook got offed by playing too much Starcraft. Well I can't say that games don't kill people anymore (I just wish it was by a more respectable game). OMG Zerg Rush!

As for the poopsocks thing ... why poopsocks? I had not heard of them previously and upon finding out about them, all I can say it that it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Have these people not heard of Depends?

Games are televised and professional players are treated, as well as paid, like sports stars.

Why ain't we moving to South Korea right now?

...

Oh yeah, North Korea. Bummer.

You are correct, sir. My younger brother nearly killed himself this way. He was substituting massive doses of caffeine for a full night's sleep, and between that and dehydration (from only drinking Red Bull and Starbucks' double chocolate-chip frappucinos) eventually suffered a seizure and passed out. He had to go off caffeine for a month to get his system back in order.

Little back story about myself. In college one of the psych professors wanted to do an experiment on gamers involving sleep dep. Well, being an extremist gamer at the time (I've gotten better. I just play WoW too much now.) I took the challenge up. Long story short, myself and three other gamers were put into labs in the college for observation with whatever we wanted as far as beverages and food went (I think we spent $3k on everything we wanted) and told to play games for as long as we could. Myself and another guy got into it by playing Street Fighter II for 12 hours straight. The SNES finally gave up on us, so we got a replacement machine and moved onto something else. I can't even remember half the games I played. Myself and one other guy hit the 50+ hour mark and were pretty loopy by then. We both were power gamers and knew how to do this, so we drank lots of MD and water, and ate high protein foods. This kept our bodies pretty happy, but mentally we were fucked up something aweful. At the 60 hour mark the professor called it off since we were getting into a dangerous area. I think we scared him, since we both got pissed off because he stopped us from playing.
