I keep running into variations on this image when I least expect to. Does anyone know anything about the source/intent of the original image? I'm assuming it didn't always say, "I'M USING THE INTERNET!!!1"

The original (unedited) image above appears to have been a nineteenth-century advertisement for dentures, that features an engraving of an 18th-century Quaker or Anglican minister. The prominance of the teeth, and the significance of the man laughing out loud in the advertisement indicate the confidence the wearer has in his denture's fit. This would be a period version of our modern denture commercials where denture wearers bite into apples, squawk at auctions, and otherwise do things that users of other dentures are afraid to do, lest their teeth fall out.

I used to use a home-brewed photoshopped version of the image to smack noobs who would hang out in the fishing forums over at Gaia Online and ask the exact same stupid questions without reading the stickies first. Fishing being the only reason I still played Gaia Online.

It's photographic plates. They were coated with soluble and insoluble gelatin back in the day, also George Eastman had an associate in the 1880s called Charles Forbes.

Edit: also, if you flip the picture horizontally, you can see there was an advert for photographic supplies on the back.

Hahaha, go look now. The dental nonsense is back! Wikipedia is like a honeypot for bumptious know-it-alls.

This is an advertisement for Mr Franklin Q. Forbes' "Perma-Fix Dental Plate Company" of Buffalo, NY. The "insoluble" is a dig at his competitors' inferior dental plates which were made of low quality papier-mache and were apt to disintegrate at the most inappropriate moments to the considerable embarrassment of the wearer.
