Ohio resident George Gillespie has filed a $25,000 lawsuit against two men he met in an AOL chatroom, claiming he has been inflicted with "severe emotional distress and physical injury that is of a nature no reasonable man could be expected to endure it." The complaint also names AOL as a defendant for allowing the alleged harassment to take place. One of the men, Bob Charpentier, has filed a response seeking to reserve the right to file a $125,000 countersuit against Gillespie.

Don't they know they can just LOG OUT if they don't like what's going on in a chatroom? You'd almost think these wankers were furries, weren't if for the fact that the lawsuit's actually been filed...

AOL actually has a disclaimer on the bottom of it's chatroom page IIRC. It's been ages since I've used it.

Actually, that's the most likely explanation, they're worse than furries, they're AOL users.

How about furry AOL users? FurryMUCK's population would double if only they'd accept AOL addresses. No shit.

"We live in a rough society, as compared to Europe, where offending someone or directly cursing or attacking their dignity can give you a cause of action," he said.

Right there. Just last night Furry's Eurotrash said the same thing. Something about tolerance being a virtue AND a duty. Seems the Continent's gone downhill since the Great War, shame.

Some day the world shall be shown what pointless inanity Internets drama really is. And as a race, we shall lol.

To be fair, he isn't doing this because someone was being mean to him on the internet, wah wah. The others took the time to find his address, drive there (from out of state, I believe? Too lazy to check.), and take pictures of his home to send him, as a threat.

I'd at the very least consider a restraining order in a case like this.

Ahh... I don't know if I'm bored enough to go searching. Can you give me a little summary?

Well, it is generally recommended that you make posts relating to the topic. :D

Just to keep some semblance of being on topic, this sentence from the article seems appropriate for here: "It's just the Internet, for God's sake. It's nothing important."

Back on topic whilst Vanilla catches up on current events in the Internet world...

Gillespie, 53, claims that Marlowe and Bob Charpentier, a 52-year-old Oregon resident, insulted him and harassed him in the AOL chatroom called "Romance — Older Men" to the point where it inflicted "severe emotional distress and physical injury that is of a nature no reasonable man could be expected to endure it."

This isn't entirely unexpected. I've had a convo with a person a similar age on a chatroom many years ago who got his/her knickers in a twist even when I was being civil. Unlike this shmuck, that other person left. People highly underestimate the usefulness of things like block and the exit command.

"I was humiliated beyond what 'no man could endure' "

You know, stuff like that goes on at the Fur Dungeon and no one seems to mind, many actually enjoy it. :D

Yano I sometimes wonder what would happen if one of these people fell off their chair while surfing on a chat room...they might *OMG* have a brush with reality then!
