Okay, all I got to say is, I just got the Read or Die OAV yesterday, and all I have to say, is that if you're an Anime fan like I am, you shoudl get it and see it (Or wait untill CArtoon Network shows it tomorrow night.)

It is indeed something you should see if you're an Anime fan. And if you aren't... you might like it anyways.

Thought I'd put this up and reccomend something that's actually damn cool.

What he said...

However, It's sometimes irritating being someone who <3 Anime, and having furry acquaintance... NO I WON'T WASTE MY CD-BURNER'S TIME BURNING COPIES OF "WOLF'S RAIN" FOR YOU. *IT*IS*ABSOLUTE*SHITE* ... Here, try Haibane, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, and since you're a lonely single nerd, I'll chuck in DearS as well-- btw, DearS has a character named "Neneko" in it... "Oh! Neko! Gimme!!!"

(and if they've really been annoying, I trick them into taking copies of Ebichu...)

Thank you so much for saying that. I'm SICK of people on message boards (which have NOTHING to do with anime) blathering on and on about how OMG AWESUM Wolf's Rain is. I saw it and thought it was utter crap. Apparently, I am in a minority.

'omg liek, r they ppl or r they wolves?!'

When I saw it, all I could think about was how some idiot furry was gonna build their own little fantasy world around it. And how're they're really one of the characters from it. You *know* it has/will happen.

About the quality of the show.. it just feels kinda 'flat' to me. Though I did think Darcia was pretty cool.

I'd say that is a definite YES, since it basically provides validation to some of these wanks' notion that they are, indeed, OMG REAL WOLVES in human bodies.

It feels like shameless pandering to masses of fat screaming furry yaoi fangirls who can't get past OMG ANIME BISHONEN KAWAIIIIIIIIIIIIII without creaming their panties, that's what it feels like to me. Almost like Weiss Kreuz, only worse. I practically heard the writers in the board room going, "Make sure you add a boy who hasn't gone through puberty yet. You know, to satisfy the pedophile demographic. We're trying to appeal to the same crowd that had spasms over Shuuichi in Gravitation."

So get a fucking DVD burner.

Also, Wolf's Rain was IMHO one of the best anime series of the year. I think 2002, and the other one were GitS SAC (and maybe Haibane Renmei too). You don't see much of such good graphics and animation lately, with the anime industry in the sort-of crisis.

It's certainly so much better than, say, this Naruto thing, so tremendously popular among teenagers and/or fangirls. It's fucking stupid, boring, repetative, and even just not looking good... and I'm saying this as a ninja nut - why all of these idiots won't see, say, Dagger of Kamui? Becouse they're all braindead new breed of a DBZ fans, that's why.

Never seen any WR fanart. I wasn't looking, but I wasn't looking for a Naruto fanart neither - and I've still seen hundreds of them pictures.

Also, I'm presenting you MY OWN WOLF'S RAIN YAOI IMAGE. Totally ^.^, isn't it? Snowolf would like it, too bad he's gone.

Maybe those dogs had watched that episode from South Park where Stan discovers that his dog is gay.

I thought Wolf's Rain was one of those ones that pretends to be deep and such, but is really pretty flat. That doesn't stop the Hot Topic chicks from going completely bonkers over it. My wife watched it out of curiosity. We saw the last few episodes, so she watched it from the start when CN reprised it. She can attest it doesn't make any more sense or get any better watching it from the start. I've watched a few more episodes that I didn't see, mostly since Hallmark Channel moved when they air M*A*S*H. Wolf's Rain is at least better than watching Walker: Texas Ranger.

The art is good and what you'd expect from the Cowboy Bebop crew, but nothing sterling. It's solid animation, but most of it is in about 243 shades of gray with a few browns and golds thrown in so you know your TV isn't broken. The story is an interesting premise, but never really got off of the ground enough for me to think it was anything other than a flat premise drawn out over two seasons. They really could have told the story in 13 episodes. I like drama as much as the next person, but there has to be something more driving it than "Let's go on a trip and get our asses kicked a few times along the way!" Inuyasha is almost deeper than Wolf's Rain in that respect. It's a 26-episode nature hike. The Chessa character is interesting, but is little more than a rag doll through most of the episodes I've seen. It is interesting how they use almost cinema-quality orchestral pieces as background in the show.

I think the bishie chicks basically go nuts over it because it doesn't make any sense to them... and because of that, they figure there's a depth that they're missing, and so it HAS to be the thing to drip over because it's all angsty and stuff.. rather than simply masquerading as such. It's more philosophical than DBZ or InuYasha, but isn't really any deeper than those. It just seems like it. So, they're all like, "OMG, I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS AT ALL! IT HAS TO BE GOOD! WUFFIEBOY IS SOOOOOO YAOI! SQUUUEEAAALLLLLL!" It's kind of Underworld meets 1984 meets N Sync.

I like the song for the end titles, but you KNOW that's paired up with Linkin Park lyrics in the signature line of about 50,000 bishie chicks' profiles on boards everywhere. The song at the end of the second soundtrack volume is better, though.

Personally, I think the titles should have been reworked to something like:

Wolf's Rain - Season One: How Many Times Can We Kick the Crap Out of the White Wolf to Where He's Near Death, but Makes a YAY Amazing Recovery

The next one shrunk and recolored because it effectively contains a spoiler that anyone who plans on seeing it to the end may not want to see.

Wolf'sRain - Season Two: I Watched 26 Episodes to Go Back to the BEGINNING!?

Of course, maybe I'm just bitter because they took off Detective Conan.

Than again, there's roughly 1,000 times more Naruto than WR fanart on dA (including underage yaoi and stuff)... I guess, cause I'm actually yet to see ANY Wolf's Rain fanart. Seriously. You can show me some actual fans if you want.

There WAS some Wolf's Rain fanart a while back, but it was quickly overrun by the Naruto crap, and the artist who drew a lot of the WR art yanked it all down after this big brew-ha-ha over ART THEEFS, people were using her fanarts for website backgrounds and such. When I first joined SA (a couple of my fave artists have galleries there) I saw a lot of Naruto yaoi. But that's calmed down a bit.

I still see more Sonic porn on there than I ever thought could possibly exist. That, and the whole diapers-and-buttertrolls furry fetish type stuff. You can pretty much sit there and refresh the SA main page and get at least one or two examples of each with every click.

Well, appearantly there IS some WR fanart on dA, and...
- fucking shit, is it a zombie wesael chewing on on a little bear's ear?
- a vomit-inspiring background
- oh, someone at last smashed his nose ^_^
- she sure got a pretty big head!
- whenever I see a dog like this, I think "Kimmaugh!"
- "This is him as a Wolf's Rain character."
- "not yaoi"
- "Dis is Kiba from Wolf's Rain. And me."

And now, this:
This pic start with only Hige's part but while drawing it I had idea for the other three ^^ Come on, tell me: Hige's collar just BEG to be pulled. It's like Duo's braid. I'm even fairly surprised to haven't found fanart about his collar...
Yes, I'm Hige addict. gotta love the fluff.

Oh, Jesus.

I agree fully. I friggin' hate that show, but Darshe, to me, feels like he doesn't belong. He's too cool a cool character for the show, it seemed. Hell, he's got the VA God doing his voice, and he killed the wolves and tore up the flower girl, which is always nice, 'cause I fucking hated them. It kept piling on more and more ridiculous and stupid elements that just makes it so mockable. A giant talking walrus (when the walrus talked, I laughed my ass off), the nonsensical human-wolf transition (its never at all clear if they transform into humans, or if it's an illusion), that fucking annoying flower girl, the goofy indian tribe with the chief with the melting face, the dull story that rarely went anywhere, the "Jagura opens paradise" sequence that made no damn sense at all, the absolutely back-fuck retarded "humans are born from wolves" BS, and the fact that any half-way interesting character was bumped off and when they were alive, pushed into the background.

How that show could be made by the same team that did the gift from God that is Cowboy Bebop I cannot grasp, though the story and show itself has a totally different creator(s). The only thing it shares with Bebop is Yoko Kanno and the production team.

Looks like those drugs Dr. Vinnie Boombatz gave 'im seem to be having some side effects...

It's actually VERY clear it's an illusion. I have no idea what would you make think otherwise.

Looking at the show, it's not clear that it's an illusion per se.. simply the most reasonable assumption. They're shown using their hands in human form a bit too much to make it glaringly evident that it's an illusion.. rather than having some human sitting there jumping up and down while trying to manipulate something with their mouth. Other times, however, they cut to scenes of the wolf form, like when Blue was pulling off Hige's collar, and we're not shown what such a thing would look like to anyone seeing the illusion. So, it's inferred, but not really made totally evident... kind of like Hobbes in Calvin and Hobbes.

ADVANCE WARNING - SOME SPOILERS AHEAD

I agree fully. I friggin' hate that show, but Darshe, to me, feels like he doesn't belong. He's too cool a cool character for the show, it seemed.

I dunno if I'd say I hated it. If I did, I wouldn't even watch it out of curiosity or rewatch these last few episodes to see if I can make any more sense out of it... assuming I'm not doing anything else at the time like showering or watching the Chinese newscast on another channel. But, at the same time, I don't really like it, either. Come to think of it, I don't know if there's really any anime I'd call "good" anime.. just anime I like to watch, and anime I don't like to watch. (The possible exception being Hayao Miazaki's Spirited Away.) But, even the stuff I like to watch isn't exactly "good."

Darcia (dunno what the official spelling is) is definitely out of place there. Surprisingly, for a character that simply stands around and looks badass and isn't a lot more than scenery (like Boba Fett in SW), he actually has a bit more depth and motive than the other characters. The whole bit with Jagura (I always think of the old guy from Thundercats) just seems like some kind of acid trip... it makes about as much sense as that "I Can't Believe it's not Butter" commercial where a lady at a hotel asks for the non-butter, and gets taken off to some masquerade ball. The only thing I can say that makes scenes with her worthwhile is she's got a nice rack. I caught last night's episode where she keeps screaming "Why can't you love me?!" and I just wanted her to shut the hell up.

It kept piling on more and more ridiculous and stupid elements that just makes it so mockable. A giant talking walrus (when the walrus talked, I laughed my ass off), the nonsensical human-wolf transition (its never at all clear if they transform into humans, or if it's an illusion), that fucking annoying flower girl, the goofy indian tribe with the chief with the melting face, the dull story that rarely went anywhere

The walrus was exceedingly goofy. I can only assume it was some giant mutant walrus. I can understand that it "talked" because the wolves could understand it whereas a human would not. I only caught a couple of episodes with the indians, but whenever the wolves talked to the horses, it tripped me up at first. Since I hadn't seen many other episodes with animals (I haven't seen most of the first season), it took me a while to figure out if they were talking to the horse, or some guy off camera, or what. The Native Americanism in there just seemed forced.. like some furry fanfic where they're just going OMG! INJUNS ARE SOOO COOOOOL AND IN TOUCH WITH NATURE AND NOT LIKE US WHO RAPE AND PLUNDER ANY PIECE OF DIRT WE TOUCH AND OMFG THEY'RE ALL ONE WITH WOLVES AND JUNK! It felt like an episode of Captain Planet.

and the fact that any half-way interesting character was bumped off and when they were alive, pushed into the background.

Since by now I'm assuming anyone reading this thread has seen what they wanted to see of it, I'll leave things at the spoiler warning at the top of this post. That was one of the big things that got me. Everyone dies. It's not like a story has to be some happy-happy la-la Neverland.. but, geez.. do you have to draw a story out over 26 episodes just to bring us back around to the beginning? I could kind of overlook the ending if there were hints that things were different... like the wolves didn't look exactly as they did before. So.. what.. did the universe reboot? It kind of reminds me of the end of Big O, but at least in that there hints that Paradigm City was changed.. not simply restarted, but one step closer to finding the answers raised through the series. With the end of WR, you can assume things will be better this time around... but it's still annoyingly ambiguous. A very Japanese ending.

There's two other things that made the characters' demises annoying. The first was that some of them didn't die sooner. Kiba personally painted the landscape with more of his own blood in the series than Freddy and Jason did during their combined careers... and yet, one or two episodes later, he's prancing along the countryside chasing after the FTD Paradise Bouquet. Not that taking a near-death ass-whupping and making a happy-happy recovery an episode later isn't a staple of anime..... but the level to which characters suffered fatal wounds and seemingly shrugged them off in WR is on the scale of Dragonball Z. I'm surprised Kiba didn't eventually turn into some blonde glowy wolf and nail Darcia with a kamehameha wave.

The second is that, after the ass-whuppings and trials they all endure, they almost all go out with a fizzle, instead of a bang.. and all within the last few episodes.... exept maybe Darcia, but that's only cuz he got popped like a balloon caught on a power line. So, he literally went out with a bang... or maybe more of a sizzle. At any rate, you pretty much knew halfway through the series that most, if not all of them were going to die. It was just a matter of when. If they had killed off at least one or two near the middle of the series or something, it might have made the ending less silly. At least then someone would have succumbed to the hardships they faced because they were just too great.. making their inevitable demise more plausible. But, they all manage to pull through one tight spot after another.. and for what.... to take a bad step off of a mountain, have a ledge give out from under them, or FINALLY have to take a little dirt nap after one ass-kicking too many... the level of that final ass-kicking being nothing compared to some of the ones they received earlier. I mean, hell, some of them were practically sliced through with laser cannons, and managed to trudge along... yet Steven Blum looks at them cross-eyed in the last couple of episodes, and they fold faster than The Flash on laundry day. It wasn't so much annoying that they all died, but that they piled their deaths on at end, and they mostly died incredibly pointless deaths. The way most of them died was comparable to someone doing a full term of service during a war, then coming home and tripping while stepping off the plane and breaking their neck.

"Dis is Kiba from Wolf's Rain. And me."

Notice she's also going to pair herself up with Spike from Bebop and Alucard from Hellsing. I'd wager 80% of her clothing comes from Hot Topic. The only thing she's missing is Sesshoumaru in a French maid outfit to do her bidding.

All the Miyazaki's and Oshii's animated, and most by Otomo (Metropolis wasn't that great, or I don't like this retro style). And as we're talking about wolves, MONONOKE HIME FUCKING RULES. My favourite movie ever. Oshii's Jin-Roh/Wolf Brigade is great too.

No. They're never using any tools, even knives are an illusion. When they're catching somebody or someone "using their hands", they're actually using their jaws (causing the girls' bird to die, or the human kid to scare and fall and die too)... they're never actually using "their hands", ever. That's that REALLY damn obvious. They're just flashing as a humans back and forth alike a "thermooptic camouflage" in GitS, they're never ever changing. Sentient animals see them in their true form, some people too - sometimes. That's all.

I guess it might be better to say it's not entirely evident.. until you stop to think about it.. whether or not the "illusion" has any capacity to interact with the world beyond tricking the eyes. I recall at least one scene.. though only from a commercial (so it could be unrelated scenes spliced together) where Kiba as a human lunches at the "camera" with his mouth, then showing the wolf biting. There's few scenes, if I recall correctly, where one of the wolves will tackle someone or such, and the person will react as if attacked by a human body.

When you start to break it down, the most reasonable explanation is that it is a simple illusion.. but the concept of an illusion that masks a form so different from what people are seeing is fundamentally just goofy. For example, you could rationalize that a wolf lunging its body at someone could use its mass and impact somewhere in the torso. The illusion might appear, as it has in the cartoon, like someone sacking the guy like a quarterback. But this would mean that either the human illusion would have to appear to be attacking like a dog.. which would look pretty darn strange... or the illusion somehow has absolutely no relation to the wolf's body.. so the wolf could lunch at someone's head while it appears like the human's feet haven't left the ground. Otherwise, if the case of the biting human Kiba means the human illusion's mouth relates to the wolf's mouth... it'd be a cartoon about four wacky guys running around on all fours.

At least with The Last Unicorn, the unicorn appeared to be a mare... the same form, but no horn. But wolves masquerading as humans... a form very unlike their true form... with no visual cues to those people seeing the illusion (in the cartoon, not the viewers of the show) that if they tried to do something like... say.. putting a sombrero on Tsume.. the sombrero would magically pass through their head and stop somewhere around the "human's" kneecaps (when it fell on his back) is just a HUGE plot hole. You could say that a sombrero on Tsume's back would appear to be on his head to humans, but then you'd have the problem of explaining how things spatially related to the wolf's body tie into the human illusion. The whole idea is just flawed from the start no matter how you slice it.

Of course, it is just a cartoon. If you think it's silly, you're more likely to notice the plot holes. If you like it, you're either less likely to notice them, or more willing to overlook them. It's kind of like how I loved the first Batman movie when I was a kid. Now I see it and think it was really, really bad. Not Batman Forever bad.. but still pretty bad.

Speaking of plot holes, I just saw Red Dragon the other night. I only caught the last 30 minutes of it, though. Can anyone shed light on how Ralph Fiennes was able to shoot himself in the head, and appear later?????

Awww no. Ralph Fiennes!? God damn it, what is it with all these shoddy remakes? It was Tom Noonan in that role in the original and was he ever creepy.

I haven't seen the movie since it first came out in theaters, so I'm going by what I remember in the book.

Frank (The killer played by Ralph) faked his own death. How he did it was pretty simple.

He needed a body. The body he used was one of his co-workers he saw hanging out with the blind woman he was in love with. Frank waited till he left her front door, then he killed him, and stashed his body somewhere.

Later on, in the scene where he had brought the blind woman to his house, he set his plan in motion. After starting the fire in the house, he took the body of his co-worker, said his 'last' bit, then fired the shotgun at the head of his dead co-worker, completely blowing it off from the chin up. When the blind woman heard the shot, then found the body, she thought it was Frank (She had no reason to think it was anybody else). Everyone thought the body they found was Frank's, mainly due to the fire damaging the body beyond repair, and also the testimoney of the blind woman.

-Edited in order to make better sense of what I was saying-

Ah... I didn't realize the woman was blind.

Re: the whole wolf/hand/illusion thingy, Cartoon Network is, at this very moment, airing "City of Howls" which I assume is the first episode. I'm not sure why they skipped several end episodes. At any rate, Tsume is shown holding a knife in one hand, and the remains of a robot in the other. Even if the knife is an illusion, the chunk of robot in his hand doesn't look to be anything a wolf could hold in its mouth. Also, maybe I wasn't looking intently enough, but it looked like he was driving a jeep. The setup of the shots kept making it look like he was the driver, but he was on the left side. I forget if the vehicles in WR follow American conventions, with the drivers on the left, or Japanese, with the drivers on the right. For all intents and purposes, though, it looked like he was the driver. Quite a feat for a quadrupedal flea bag.

Not that I want to perpetuate the debate. The illusion concept is the most straightforward explanation. But it still doesn't jive enough to reduce the goofiness factor surrounding the whole series.... in my opinion of it, anyway.

But, what do I know.. I watch Inuyasha.

Also, I'm presenting you MY OWN WOLF'S RAIN YAOI IMAGE. Totally ^.^, isn't it? Snowolf would like it, too bad he's gone.

About the description to that picture,I can relate. Recently my poor 10 month old male puppy was being hit on by an adult male rottie and no,he didn't like it. :(
(He barked and growled at the bastard)

the artist who drew a lot of the WR art yanked it all down after this big brew-ha-ha over ART THEEFS, people were using her fanarts for website backgrounds and such.

And I think I know who your talking about.

Good god! It sounds kinda fucking redundant to bitch about so-called arttheft when you don't own the damn characters at all and the studio can sue your ass if they found out about your little fanworks!

As for Wolf's Rain,IMHO it could've been better and made more sense. I've seen all of it on Adult Swim and is slowly buying the series. But I'm way too busy with my little samurai shows to care.

Although,I do happen to like a bit of yaoi myself

Screw Wolf's Rain, The Wolf Brigade is just god damn cool.

Jin-Roh is an animated movie set in an alternate universe in which it is hinted that Japan lost WWII to Germany (weren't they allies?) - people drive Volkswagen beetles, books are published in German and a coated Nazi officer can be glimpsed in the opening narration. The movie features many allegories to the original Red Riding Hood tale before it was cleaned up for modern consumption. If you had seen The Company of Wolves you'll know what I mean.

Rotkappchen was a German story, you know ;) "R they ppl or a r they wolves" theme like in Wolf's Rain, too, but told VERY differently. Lotsa blood and a bite/machinegun fire violence. The most unhappy happy end ever.

I do sorta like seeing retellings of that particular story...as long if it's not too preachy. And the whole unhappy ending thing and all gets me,I'll check it out when I get a chance.

(I have such a small budget when it comes to my spending money)

And as for a Wolf's Rain's ending, in my version (divix from Internet) they had won and survived... all of them. Kinda odd, isn't it.

Just for anyone who's looking for something 'darker' to watch. I'm going to suggest Monster. I've watched the first twelve episodes and I'm hooked. It's more haunting and darker than most movies could hope to be. It's a psychological/mystery/horror type of show. So be warned, if this isn't your thing; don't bother with it. In my opinion, it's definately worth a view.

And damnit, now I can't wait to see what happens next. :(

The last ep I saw had a snippet at the very end where it looked like the Earth had been reborn, and Kiba was walking down a street, presumably to start the search all over. Is there another episode, or do you mean the ending there where it shows them all and everything looks green and such? Hmm.. Thinking back to the end CN showed, I guess things are better the next go around. If I recall, the city they're in isn't war-torn like at the very beginning, but everything is in good condition and green and such. The end I've seen reminds me of the endings to Big O or Gall Force.

Given CN has been demonstrating an increasing habit of editing out one or two episodes to make things a neater package for viewers that, when endings are vague, they get more obnoxious than Inuyasha fangirls when they put IY on hiatus.... I wonder if the recent restart of WR without running the full series was an attempt to make the ending seem more nice and tidy by not airing any episodes after the Jagura storyline. Seems kinda dumb, but I wouldn't put it past them.

Ok normally, I fucking hate anime. However I've downloaded and watched (so far) the first 20 episodes of this. And I really do like it.

I dont really feel its that haunting or dark, more on the contrary. Thats just me, but very interesting for sure.

Glad that you liked it, Mouse.

I also just remembered this. Broken Saints is one of, if not the best flash series I've seen. (And the music is pretty good too.) I suggest watching 'Trinity' if you wanna get a feel for the series in just one flash.

To revive this old thread...

Haibane Renmei was great, I loved it. One, which I started viewing recently is Last Exile seems very interesting. Steampunk setting, great visuals, and even a steampunk setting. I love steampunk. I do.

I classified Last Exile "stupid" when I saw marines using a XVIIIth century tactics of "standing still in the line and firing at enemy doing the same", while equiped with an automatic individual weapons.

They're MISSING THE POINT. It had nothing with a honor and a gentlemen's fight. Firing salvos in lines was the only way to archive anything, as the guns were taking so long to reload and were so unaccurate. Mainly psychological effect. The biggest killer was bayonett - and artillery (Napoleon's "queen of the battlefield"). And with the invention of the very first machine guns, much of the fighting was already in the trenches and by the snipers, like in the American civil war (not to mention "irregular" tactics of the Americans during the revolution).

What made this tactic increasingly suicidal was the development of improved firearm technology in the mid-19th century. When the American Civil War opened in 1861, it was fought with the same tactics that had been used in the era of Napoleon and indeed for several centuries. By the time the war drew to a bloody close in 1865, it had become a preview of the First World War, complete with trenches, machine guns, field fortifications, and massive casualties. The Battle of Petersburg near the end of the war with its trenches and static formations, contrasts sharply with the early battles such as the First Battle of Bull Run where maneuver was still possible, and famous charges such as Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg, revealed the military futility of a direct assault on an opposing line.

Two main factors were responsible for the change. First, the new breech-loading firearms—which were curiously ignored by both sides until mid-way through the conflict—made it possible for a small number of troops to maintain a heavy volume of fire. A handful of defenders sheltering in a trench or behind an improvised obstacle could hold off a large body of attackers indefinitely. Second came the machine gun.

All the while such things emphasize the stupidity of man, and the sheer folly of war that is created when man tries to distract itself from the inbred function of self preservation with silly things like honor and duty.

Last exile is a trip, but it needs to be done in large portions to get your fill. One or two episodes a sitting don't cut it for me.

I don't know though what I would say is good for one episode shots over 5 episode binges...

I'd start reccomending OAVs, but they only run in clumps of 3 to 6 episodes and that's it.

I just finished Scrapped Princess and I'd recommend that one. Was quite good shit. I've liked almost every anime I've seen except escaflowne which had stupid characters with pointy noses.
