I'm sort of surprised they didn't use e-machines (and satan) for this endeavor.

I TOLD YOU ABOUT THIS WHINE BITCH MOAN.

Ya, I had the pleasure of working on one of these for an hour, pure hell. By "optimized" they mean "take over EVERY user-end function." It took over .doc, .xml, .ppt, .html, the start menu, the taskbar, quicklanch, the security center, what would normally be empty space on the desktop, EVERYTHING was run by some shitty AOL-made component that slowed the computer to shit. The entire desktop ran some shitty flash-based menu that ran different AOL components, quicklaunch had enough icons to take over 3/4 of the taskbar which REGENERATED WHEN DELETED. I guess I've ranted about this shit long enough.
(It ran those office files with an AOL-OPTIMIZED version of StarOffice.)

Webster and PeoplePC both did it a long time ago. Actually I think those webster computers probably wound up being a decent deal at the time. They were cheap because they used cheap or older equipment in them. But then someones grandmother doesnt really need an $800 video card if they are just going to be using it to send Email.

The old computer I was using was a PeoplePC built for Ford Motor Co. employees. Which was actually pretty nice for being free.

Anyway this AOL PC would cost you $585.80 at the end of a year with aol's charges. Not to mention its hard as hell to get those fucking people to stop billing your credit. Working in credit cards, I see the shit all the time. Its funny - literally you are signing up for them to bill you monthly whether you use the service or not. Merely cancelling your AOL access will never stop them from billing you $23.90 a month, you always have to specifically tell them to do that.

That's why someday I want to start an AOL account just to see if I CAN cancel. Oh, I will, but I want to see how hard these people try.

Ten years from now, they'll be giving away these kinds of computers as Happy Meal prizes.
